How many pair of shoes will you pack, ladies?

Depoends on how long the cruise is. On a 14 day I can easily take six pair: couple flat sandals, aqua sandals, couple high heels, couple mid-height heels, runners if I'm feeling optimistic. And if we've been shopping beforehand in Florida or something probably a couple more pair on top of that ;) I can't help myself.....

I am a shoe freak and pack way too many, but like to be prepared. I actually put back 4 pairs as I was packing for my June 3 Summit cruise and still took 9! Fortunately, USAir didn't charge for the 2 bags I brought. :)

On our first TA, I brought 8 pairs and was the talk of the roll call.

Now, for a 14 night TA, I hope I can keep it to 4 pairs. One pair walking shoes, one pair dressy sandals, one pair low heeled loafers and a pair of comfortable sandals that double as slippers.

The main key for me is, no matter how lovely the pair of shoes is, if you can't walk at least a mile in them comfortably, don't bring them. I have never been on a cruise that required walking less than that to get from the cabin to dinner to the show and back (with a side trip to the shops, casino or martini bar maybe). From the aft cabins on the S class ships, it is a very long haul to get anywhere.

I've brought shoes in the past that had me carrying them out of the theatre because I knew I'd be whimpering if I had to put them back on to get to the cabin. I'm sure the fashion police were very disappointed in me that night.

You'd think from the above, I'd be a sensible packer by now, but I'm not. As much as I'd like to say I'll only bring 4 pairs on the transatlantic, I'll probably bring 8 again. At least. :D

The one thing I try to cover is the end of the night swollen feet! It seems after a day of walking and then eating and drinking my feet tend to swell. The shoes for evening have to have a little give in them or be somewhat open to allow for that. I have taken beautiful shoes that I wear to dinner and then go back to the cabin to change for the rest of the evening. This is just a thought for newbie cruisers.

I was just thinking about the entire cruise and I seem to need a suitcase just for shoes. How many pair and what kind do YOU pack?

Depends on the itinerary. I usually bring 3-4 pairs of dress shoes for evening wear, one pair of sneakers, one pair of flats, one pair of slip on keds, if it's a warm weather cruise I bring flip flops and sandals. So about 8-10 pairs of shoes altogether. It depends how many different evening outfits I bring.

I also develop a swollen foot problem as a cruise progresses that I don't have elsewhere but thought it was from the way they season their food.

Boy, this is a sore point with my DH. He usually blames my shoes and bags for needing an extra piece of luggage. After all each pair of shoes needs a matching bag. We did a crossing on the QM2 this year and I really had to restrain myself because we went to Paris and London prior to the crossing. We had to be able to handly our luggage ourselves on the Eurostar train. I was really uncomfortable wearing the same shoes every night. I mean physically. It's better for my feet to wear different shoes frequently. Changes the pressure points, especially for dressy shoes but also with sandles. Wasn't so much of a problem when I was younger but as I get older it definately is an issue. I'm looking forward to our January cruise on the Solstice. We live in South Florida and will be driving or taking a car service to the port. I can take whatever I want.

LOL, on our trip to Italy last year my lovely Margo took 12 pairs. A couple were stored in the upper shelves of the closet and I almost lost an eye when a stilleto came crashing down once when I opened the closet.

You made me think of my mother. She could travel for a month in Europe with all her things in a bowling bag! Her traveling companions got tired of seeing her in the same two outfits but it worked for her. Just wash and dry overnight and she was good to go. what a woman she was!

I wonder how many people who need multiple suitcases for their cruise shoes today went to Europe for two months during their college days with just a backpack to hold all of their clothes :)

The first time I went to Europe was for three months. For the first month, I needed warmer clothing, which I mailed home as the temperature rose. In those days (1963), I had never heard of a backpack. I don't think I would have used one anyway. I was quite Jappy (Can I say that here?). I had to have matching everything. I used to say that what I saved on my purchases, paid for my trip! I saw the sites on the way to the shops! (I hope nobody minds me going down memory lane). We were so rich then. But we didn't know it. The best hotel I stayed in, was a 4* in Naples for $6 a night. We did all our laundry there. We ate in decent restaurants and they were so cheap. Today, I can barely afford the same restaurants. They are so expensive.

This weekend, all my kids are off to Europe. Today, I took two to the airport. Yes, they had backpacks. They took so little that they packed everything before they left this morning.

We are going to Europe in the fall. I would LOVE to underpack for a change. That is one of my goals in life.

  • 2 weeks later...

I took the following on my first cruise, and I think I did well!!

- 1 pair of black strappy heels

- 2 pairs of thongs

- 1 pair black ballet flats

- 1 pair old canvas flats that I threw out (took them to wear on our rainforest walk, got muddy and decided they were not worth the effort to clean up to try to get past customs :P)

I went to Europe for a month (Rome, Paris, Vienna, Copenhagen, London) with a friend during the summer between graduate school and my first job. Even though I was only 22 at the time, I stayed at nice hotels, and packed no differently than if I was going to Europe today. However, I did know a lot of people who went to Europe at that time for a month with only a backpack for all of their clothes and shoes.

I pack one and wear one. I travel with a 22 inch suitcase so I must be careful what I take. Lorelle

No one is looking at your feet- your legs, bust and tummy yes!

OMG!! Now I'm really in trouble (L0L) I've enjoyed reading all these posts-- shoes are always my "waterloo". One solution for me is to bring ballroom dance shoes-- they're super lite and wonderfully comfortable.

Do flip flops really count as shoes? If not, I only take 4. If they do, put me down for 9 or 10. I like to match :D

I just schlepped across the country from the east coast to Seattle with 3 pair of shoes. I wanted to take 4 but forgot a pair. Maybe I'll buy something before we board the ship this Friday.

Really, how do you do that? Since I'm always traveling with my husband and sometimes our son too we never leave the house with less than 3 big bags and carry ons.

What's your secret?

I am bringing more than usual due to the nature of the trip...wearing nicer casual walking shoes on the flight over, so I can wear them on our one night in Rome pre-cruise( and two nights in Rome post-cruise) and switch them off with my real comfy sneakers for all of the strenous ruins we will be walking through. Then sandals for our days at sea (3) and some other half days at sea. Then one pair of dressy sandals for dinners and one pair of dressy silk heels for our two formal nights. And my super comfy rubber crocs, to use as slippers and if we go to the pool, since I can't go barefoot with a bad foot.

Thats six pair- more than I usually bring when we travel independently, but there is more getting dressed and I usually don't bring sandals to Europe. Oh well, hopefully I can get them all into my suitcase.

However, I am carrying one purse with me and old bringing a small dressy purse for dress evening and that all...that should help a bit!

Can't wait to go! 7 weeks more to wait!

Lorelle: I also only travel with a carryon. I finally got my mother to do same 2 years ago. Shoes are the only impediment. I usually wear the heaviest and bulkiest (running shoes) on the plane. I then take them off during the flight. I like using the gym on as many days during the cruise as possible. For dress shoes I take one pair of ballet flats and one with heels. I also usually take one pair of walking shoes but that also depends on how much clothing I need to pack. When I see all the luggage people bring on a cruise it is kind of shocking. Even on a 16 day cruise I have plenty of clothes that fit in the carryon.
