Palm Beach Vs. Eagle Beach

Where is the best place to hang out at either of these beaches? And which is the better of the two beaches?

If you want to be near it all, restaurants, shops, casinos, etc, then you want Palm Beach. If you prefer to be at a beach which is wider, less crowded then Eagle Beach would be your spot. I prefer Eagle Beach.

As to Palm Beach, for the money, imo take the day pass at the Radisson. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/tags.php?tag=aruba+radisson+day+pass

 

If you did not wish to take that route, there are two vendors at the south end of the Radisson's beach who rent umbrellas and chaises. To get to that location just take the sidewalk between the Riu and Radisson resorts, out towards De Palm Pier. Itito's and New Kid are the vendors. We have rented from Itito and dd and dh have gone on tube rides and such with one, don't remember which. :confused:

 

My personal preference over MoomBa just due to location and at least if you rent an umbrella you are guaranteed shade. At MoomBa you will have to try to "squeeze" under a tree for shade. MoomBa photos below

That settles it, Itito's it is, I definitely need an umbrella.

 

Would you happen to know about how much it would be to rent 2 chairs and an umbrella ( at Itito's) as compared to getting a day pass at Radisson?

A couple of years back it was $20 for a large umbrella (there was a smaller size) and $8/ chaise lounge.

Last November, it was $52 for 4 chairs and a large umbrella for the four of us.

 

I have recently researched the Radisson day pass for November, and it was $16 per person, which also gives you pool access and shade trees. Both are close to each other, so the section of the beach is the same.

This info is so helpful! Our stop in Aruba is short. 7 AM - 1 PM (all aboard at 12:30)

 

Questions:

 

Anyone know what time we can get over to the Radisson? Do they open by 8 AM??

 

How is the snorkeling at that part of the beach? Any points of underwater interest to pay attention to there?

 

How long, approximately, should the bus ride take back to port? What time should we plan to get off the beach to make sure to get to the ship on time? (Next stop is Cartagena. A bit of an expense if we miss sai-away!)

Towel hut at the Radisson opens at 7 or 8 a.m. The front desk is open 24 hours. You pay for the day pass at the front desk.

 

Imo, taking traffic into consideration, give yourself a GOOD 30 minutes to get back to the ship from the Radisson. It will not take you that long, but with traffic it will give you a cushion. Taxis will not allow you in with a wet bathing suit.

 

There is nothing to see snorkeling off of Palm Beach, you may see some fish swimming by, but that is just a random thing. The water here is like a lake and has "only" a white sandy bottom.

 

There is a spot though between the Westin and Divi Phoenix Resort (south end of Palm Beach) which you can snorkel. The water is very calm there as well. About 150 yards off the beach there is a little jetty like rock island http://www.arubabound.com/photos/plmbch/palai.jpg where you can view fish, octopus, and other critters, etc. There are also rock jetties along both sides of the Phoenix's beach which may offer some glimpses of sea life.

 

For Palm beach which like I said, has no "real" snorkeling this is a pretty darn good spot if you just want to do some snorkeling on your own for free. Unfortunately the beach sand here is loaded with tiny coral pieces and rocks so bring apporpriate footwear. There is a bit of free shade http://www.arubabound.com/photos/plmbch/palaf.jpg. in the form of a couple of palapas. No chaises though nor much else real close by. The Westin is a short walk. Otherwise for snorkeling from shore check out Boca Catalina and Catalina Cove.

Is the Hyatt or the Radisson a prettier waterfront setting?

The Hyatt and Radisson are on the same stretch of beach separated only by the Occidental Resort a distance of 630 feet (.10 mile)

I like the little huts -- which one usually has more to rent for one-day visitors?

We only need an umbrella & 2 chairs for an hour or two and Itito's charged us only $10 plus threw in a float with the deal :) Worked out perfect for us. Cheaper then the Radisson day pass we were planning on doing. That plus the city bus for $2.60 round trip made for a cheap beach trip.

I was told by a frequent guest at the resort, in speaking with management, they are now limiting access to palapas and chaises at the Amsterdam Manor based upon the resort's occupancy. Anyone wishing to use this an option may wish to contact the resort in advance or have a "plan B".

At the Radisson at least, should their policy change, there are other vendors right there who rent chaises as well as umbrellas.

Was there last week and when we walked onto the beach at the Amsterdam Manor, the guy told us we could only rent the chairs at the back of the beach, which would have put us right by the road. We weren't happy with that so we just turned left and walked to the next spot over and we were able to get chairs for $6 each no problem. We had a nice palapas and were right near a little bar that also served food. We really didn't go far, we were still on the part of the beach that had tons of space. Had we kept going it looked like it got a lot more crowded with chairs, so glad we were allowed to stay there. Not one single person bugged us the whole day, not one. No hair braiding, no vendors, nobody. It was HEAVEN! There were a few other cruise passengers there also. My favorite day of the cruise.

I am coming in on a cruise on Feb. 10, 2010 and want to do a half day bottom or inshore fishing trip. Do you have any recommendations?

 

I contacted Jan Oosterwaal who has Roberto's Watersports and it sounds pretty good. He says he is located on Moemba Beach between the Holiday Inn and the Marriott. Do you have any personal info on Jan or his operation?

 

Can you tell me how far that is from the cruise pier and how much a taxi will cost from the cruise pier? Also, is it easy to catch a taxi back to the ship.

 

Thanks for any help you can give me.
