Cruise Director?

I see threads about the various cruise directors. On our first cruise, I had no awareness of the cruise director. What is it they do and how do you all judge a good one? And where do you see them?

The CD and his/her staff coordinate all the onboard activities. They MC the production/comedy shows. They are the ambassador from the ship to the passengers.

Some are very outgoing and very friendly, they go out of their way to do special things for Cruise Critic groups etc.

Hi There,

Like wise first few cruises did not know what CD did , but then you start to spot things,

sailaway party at ports where the public can close to the ship,

a choice of things to do, not one item per hour,

increase in things to do on sea days.

yours Shogun

Over the past few years and as the ships got larger the CD's have become less visible as the position has evolved into an administrative one. With these larger ships there is more and more entertainment and the CD "manages" it and all it's personnel - bands, comedians, pianists and the like. Now a days there is a lot more managing than entertaining going on now which is how the Morning Show evolved. The role of the CD's staff is magnified, specifically the deputy CD, because of this.

You will now see the CD only at the biggest and most attended events on-board: sail away, welcome aboard, crew talent show, Captain's Circle parties and the like.
