  1. Shucks, that medallion is the best thing about Princess. Walk up to the cabin door with your hands full and open it with your elbow.
  2. It's typically used as a generic name for any number of companies that run tours in taxis that explore both sides of the wall. Usually they run between one and two hours and not all the taxis are even black. Most use your typical London cab.
  3. I vote for the Black Cab tour and the Titanic Museum. Both of them were outstanding. I wouldn't really call the Black Cab Tour political though.
  4. I think one needs to differentiate between business practices and onboard experience. Having been on 3 American Queen river cruises I would say that they are different, but certainly on a par, from a standards perspective. The service tends to be on par although more informal, in part because of the all US crew. The entertainment, while not ocean standard is certainly good with two shows nightly that you won't find on an European cruise. While the ports along the US rivers might not be as interesting as Europe, the Hop on Hop off busses are a great feature. I will agree that with each acquisition, the business side of that company certainly appears to have gone further downhill.
  5. Be aware that the ship may actually dock well south of the path shown on the map. You get to the rental cars the same way but the starting point may well south of the University shown on the first map.
  6. There was an Enterprise or National there also. Just be warned that the entrance is not well marked on that side so keep a sharp eye out.
  7. This is probably insensitive but here goes...I can actually understand the rational for some emotional support animal when flying. I say that because there are certain situations flying is a virtual necessity due to family emergencies or perhaps even the desire to travel to a location that would not be accessible without flying. Many people have a genuine fear of flying. Cruising on the other hand is an entirely optional activity. If you need to have emotional support to be on a cruise ship, should you really be there in the first place?
  8. The $200 cash reduction is just part of a promotion from Viking. In a booking I recently made it showed as an additional agent discount but in fact you could get that same $200 reduction by booking on the Viking site.
  9. I've done the 2 hour tour a couple of times and really enjoyed it. I've gotten them half price through Groupon: https://www.groupon.com/deals/gl-hornblower-san-diego-9
  10. I find it rather fascinating that pretty much everything anymore requires a label. The reality is that rarely does a label perfectly describe anything. Not to mention, as witnessed by these comments, there is no rigid definition of any label. Personally, I don't care what the label is for anything if it meets my expectations and standards.
  11. We're on that cruise also. Just not much of a joiner. I think there will be more than a handful of passengers since the cruise has been sold out for months. Planning to book our own nutshell route on the 15th.
  12. I'm curious why you decided to do the loop in this direction rather than catching the bus in Voss and taking the boat to Flam?
  13. Back to the train... I'm planning on Bergen-Voss-Gudvangen-Flam-Myrdal-Bergen. I know for example that I can book Flam to Bergen but I would prefer to book separate tickets to allow a bit more time in between. Is there any reason why this wouldn't be a good option?
  14. It's been a couple years but we really enjoyed it. It was a short walk from the ship and fascinating to watch the cargo being loaded and unloaded. We were able to get off at one island to stretch our legs for a few minutes.
  15. Interesting, when I try a booking it says 60 days...
  16. See my post above for this years excursion and price directly from My Viking Journey
  17. Mine took 6 months...my wife who submitted the renewal a couple of weeks after me only took 3 months.
  18. Went north and not south but didn't have any mosquitoes this January.
  19. Here's what it looks like this July: Full-Day Railway Journey to Voss $259 Per Person Day 4 – Flåm, Norway Wednesday, July 19 10:30 AM 7 Hours EASY MEAL SIGHTSEEING UNESCO The Quintessential Norway Experience Marvel at Norway’s stunning beauty during a breathtaking full-day “Norway in a Nutshell” experience. You will board the world-famous Flåm Railway at the cruise pier and climb nearly 3,000 feet through 20 tunnels and over numerous bridges. Stop at Kjosfossen waterfall for photos of this pristine natural wonder. You will change trains and continue to Voss, where a motor coach takes you to the Molstertunet open air museum. Here, you will gain rich insight into 18th-century life in these high mountain valleys. Continue to Tvinde waterfall for a photo stop. Enjoy lunch at the famous Stalheim Hotel, with magnificent views of the Naerøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from the veranda. Return to your ship via the mountain descent known as the Stalheimskleiva. With its steep grade and 13 hairpin turns, this is not a trip for those who fear heights.
  20. As I recall you have to be able to climb stairs to the loading zone.
  21. Thanks for the info! This is exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately it's not offered on the day we disembark and the two tours that are offered are too long.
  22. Oh I own a suit, but after a few cruises it no longer fits!
  23. Starting to do some planning for our first Viking cruise this summer. We disembark in Reykjavik for our independently booked return flight leaving at 5:00. On the large cruise lines there are normally tours with airport drop off offered. I'm wondering if Viking might have something similar (nothing is listed under shore excursions). We have a privately booked Golden Circle tour the prior day so I'm just looking for something to fill the time before the flight that could accommodate luggage and an airport drop off. If not, what time must you be off the ship and am I better off with a Viking or private airport shuttle? Thanks!
  24. Shoot, the cruise we were on one gentleman wore pants all day and changed into shorts for dinner every night. Never could quite figure that one out.
