  1. Following too. Been on all the S ships but Reflexion. Lucky you in a CS. Recently sailed out of Civitavecchia on the Enchanted Princess but got in the day before as been to Rome couple of times. We flew into Fiumincino with British Airways from LHR on an 8ish flight. Queues for passport control was massive for non -EU. Also the queue for taxis was massive but we fortunately had a booking with RomeInLimo. €180 for a hour transfer. Got to port at 2pm. Stayed at the very basic Hotel Traghetto which is almost opposite the coach stop for transfers for the ships. I would recommend an arranged transfer if people are coming in that day.
  2. https://emmacruises.com/lamp/ Emma the blogger swears by this.
  3. Fabulous and informative travelogue as always. We have been to Mykonos and Rhodes. Would love to visit Paros and am wondering if I could yacht charter there (have done the Aegean & Dodecanese a few times). Looking forward to the Japan travelogue too as we are visiting in April (and took your previous guide recommendation for Kyoto😀). Out of interest do you ride motorbikes in Germany or are mopeds just a holiday thing?
  4. The UK moved towards metric in 1965. I was born in 1962 and it was metric in school. However we still have a mix with a lean towards metric. Babies and pints of beer always seem to come in pounds! Fair play to Stock Jock for bringing up bidets. I often use them (not sure if correctly) when on the continent. DW thinks they are disgusting. Looking forward to experiencing the Japanese WC next year. We have great seafood in the UK. However the British do not appreciate unlike North Americans it and it is exported to the continent (if they are able with Brexit).
  5. @bikerunner I understand why you are so bitter at Celebrity. We book cruises far in advance and make complex and expensive arrangements built around them. You have good reason to be PO. All power to your elbow complaining. Another example of corporate greed. Wonder why they are moving Beyond to Carib. Not sure I would like a cruise there in a hot & humid hurricane season. Recollect the ship weren't too booked up in previous Summer seasons. Did they have too many ships in Europe this year (still plenty of available cabins). Our last few cruises have been on Oceania and Princess. Previously several X and a few more booked in the future. With these sorts of stories it gives me no reason to have any brand loyalty to X or any other cruise line. Only myself and my $$$.
  6. Great review. Will be on Solstice in November at Singapore and glad you had a great experience. Looking forward to trying our fourth S-class. Good tip for a future Alaska cruise for a SV. We have one in April in Japan on the Millenium. Loved it on the Silhouette. Love the gym….but 4am. Am more of a post tour pre-dinner gym goer.
  7. We booked this once but Celebrity cancelled it. When we fly back to the UK post cruise we usually book a hotel room for the day and lie by the pool until late PM, shower then depart. Arrange an Uber from the port and the hotel (DoubleTree Hilton) has a transfer. Am sure we could be more adventurous but tend to do the Miami tour/Fort Lauderdale tour/Everglades/Shopping Mall at Sawgrass pre-cruise. Option is there though. dayuse.com hotelsbyday.com
  8. Boarding very quick for us too. Forty-five minutes from getting into a taxi from home (20 minute drive) to grabbing a drink on the ship. Always used our time slots. Really just a slow saunter through the terminal. Makes me wonder why we do not sail from Southampton more. Next few cruises are from Singapore, Yokohama, Barcelona and Mumbai.
  9. We just completed a week in the Med on Enchanted Princess. Have cruised X in various categories and have x4 booked in the future. We really enjoyed Princess and found it had some pluses and minuses in comparison with X. Eg. Really liked the quiet Retreat deck area. The standard Plus beverage package included Hendricks gin, quaffable wine and drinks service was good whereas I have felt the X tried to slow down the sommelier service. No lines. I had read that canned sodas were not included and carried them on, and pre-purchased some, but found they were included. Thus more generous than Xs package. I will not cancel the X cruises as they are decent priced and itinerary driven (Vietnam, Japan, Mumbai to Singapore). I will choose Princess if better value and the itinerary is right in future. We enjoyed two Oceania cruises in the last several months but too expensive, and too old.
  10. £2890 for 2 in a balcony with $250 OBC on the UK is a decent price for a 12 night cruise early September. The early Summer Baltic cruises even cheaper. Shame I am still working and have a trip to Sicily in September. Next year when retired and the Apex is Southampton based I bet the prices will not be so great😟. Only 20 minutes to the port😀.
  11. We tip the cabin attendant, MDR/Blu restaurant waiter team and sommelier if they offer good service (the sommelier has missed out before for slow service). At the end of the cruise will often tip a pool waiter if he has brought me the occasional drink. Odd good bar tender too Never the speciality restaurants as included and getting more expensive. Like to tip the evening bathroom attendants too. The restrooms are spotless in comparison with those on other lines that do have an evening attendant. I come from a non tipping culture but make an exception for the cruise.
  12. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g186299-i695-k10752411-Walking_to_National_Express_Bus_Station_from_cruise_ship-Southampton_Hampshire_England.html Admit I have never noticed the coach terminal. Only go on coach’s on cruise holidays. I must check it out when next in the city. Parking at Heathrow is getting ridiculous. Maybe an option for me if travelling alone.
  13. Agree with the 9.45 coach. The coach station is a bit of a walk from the port. Disembarkation is pretty swift at Southampton. The earlier coach will hit more traffic too. Anticipate being at Heathrow for 11.30 -12.00. However if your flight is earlier the 7.45 and self porter your bags off. There are plenty of taxis but imagine the driver would not be chuffed on such a short ride.
  14. Stayed at Room Mate Gerard a few years ago pre-cruise. Walkable to many places. Uber to ship. ROOM MATE GERARD - Updated 2023 (Barcelona, Catalonia) (tripadvisor.co.uk)
  15. Great review Jim. Fantastic photos. I recollect your Weymouth photos were so reminiscent of Victorian postcards. Iain looked like he was having a great time. Your bro-in-law looked a bit perplexed but am sure he was having a ball. Will be interested on your take on other lines. There are some great itineraries out there to enjoy on cruise ships, big & small. After two great Oceania cruises (South America was outstanding) we are trying Princess next week. Had a a penchant for Istanbul and a bit of Greece island hopping and they had a good itinerary. Then back to X for Japan, Thailand, India, and the new Ascent. Who knows after that! Am saving my Virgin points for a free cruise in October on their cruise line.
  16. There is a small ferry from the port to the town of Hythe on the edge of New Forest ( where Beaulieu is). It is a commuter ferry. Admit I have only sailed into the marina on a yacht. https://hytheferry.co.uk/ Not sure of taxi availability. Google is you friend
  17. I live in Hamble a small yachting village just outside Southampton. I agree to all except Weymouth for the day (best for a port visit to Portland). Winchester, Salisbury and Portsmouth (for the naval museum) are all great. A ferry to Isle of Wight although you will be on enough boats. Cowes from Southampton not as scenic as Ryde from Portsmouth. The best of IofW is the country and coast within. That little ferry (Hythe ferry) and taxi to Beaulieu is a great idea paired with Exbury. Cruise critic has an article about Southampton and I learnt a few things. I have GPSmyCity app on my phone for holidays. It has some walking tours of Southampton. Lots of Titanic stuff. Uber is plentiful and you can now use it for booking trains too. Bath is great. Like everywhere lots of strikes this Summer! There are ToursbyLocals guides for Southampton too.
  18. I had always booked cruises with included gratuities. Oceania does not so I did not factor that price in on our first trip. However some TAs may pay your gratuities & it is a perk with being a higher level Oceania cruiser after many trips with them.
  19. @LHT28 it seems I was lucky in comparison with @pinotlover 😄. Lucky I had the pancakes with maple syrup to fall back on. Enjoyed a Caesar Salad every lunch too. Cannot be held accountable for the booze though as we brought on wine at most stops having identified some decent brands on wine tours in Chile😊. The weather was great too. Anchored at Stanley and the the sail down to Antarctica @ Drakes passage was a breeze. Actually the best meal of the trip was at Bouza Winery in Montevideo. Did you visit there @pinotlover ?
  20. We really enjoyed the excellent food that we had on the Sirena in November and Marina in February. DW would argue that there were limited options for her at Polo grill as she does not eat steak/lamb/chops but I could have eaten everything on the menu. Service was v.slow at the Red Ginger on Marina. Really enjoyed the Terrace Cafe particularly in good weather. However I cannot really understand the flame torched burnt breakfast bacon. Pure carbon. I wish they offered a Canadian Back Bacon style. Perhaps it is a cultural thing. However that was my only food complaint.
  21. @Novastar we have booked our tours thru www.gowithguide.com & www.ToursbyLocals.com
  22. We went into Invergorden Sept 2020 on the Silhouette. Did a Celebrity tour to a fantastic castle in Nairn - Cawdor Castle. Enjoyable visit and lovely gardens. Imagine there are some super doors too!
  23. Love the picture of the tatooe’d elderly chap standing by Our Cilla’s statue (#1979). Looked like he was wearing one of her wigs!
