Although the phone continuously pings for towers, if you have the internet turned off, it won't do anything. (note wifi is the internet, and is only an avenue to get to the internet) So if your data is turned off, airplane mode, and you don't subscribe to the ships internet through wifi, than nothing.

This makes no sense to me. On the ship, if you pay for it, you pay 18%. If you are tipping more than 18% that is not normal. Plus, it is not tipping culture, it is customary tipping, which is 18%. So, everyone tips him, 18%.
