  1. ive said previously in many other posts, the ability to be escorted off the ship by the concierge, is in and of itself, worth the price of admission!
  2. if you havent already done so, youd be surprised what a handshake to the maitre'd will accomplish.
  3. you tip the concierge because he's the go to guy if there's a problem, or you want some thing special done. his ability to get us off the ship with a minimal muss fuss or bother is in itself worth it (imho).
  4. hey cruiseny4life. smaller ncl ships may not have a designated haven restaurant, but you still get special breakfast in moderno and lunch in cagney's it may not appear as "elegant" as a true haven restaurant, but take it from me, it aint bad! we were recently n the gem, and loved every minute of our breakfast and lunch. after a few days, the waiter had a glass of champagne waiting for us at breakfast and lunch.
  5. we travel with a very close friend. my wife and i are sapphire and the last cruise our friend was gold. we got the perks consistent with the latitude level
  6. most of the times the people doing the check in, dont even look at your check in time. also, unless youre booked into a haven or a suite, once your re through the security checkpoint and the check in counter, youll probably be given a group number and told (as in the old army saying) "hurry up and wait!" until your group number is called. even then, your cabin probably wont be ready for you until after 2 pm. and you'll be directed along with a few 1000 of your closest friends, to either the buffet, pool area or a dining room. so dont sweat the boarding time/process. if youre there the ship aint leaving without you
  7. i either dont understand your question, or i'm missing a piece of information. if it's the 2 of you and your daughter, what could be her objection to the 2 bedroom suite. the second bedroom, although small, has its own bed, bathroom/stall shower and t.v. my very close friend often travels with my wife and i, and she's perfectly content with staying in the 2nd bedroom. this way she gets her own room, and all the goodies attached to a suite. she's now hooked on this particular cabin, and the 3 of us have utilized this on the jade in april from athens (9) days, the star 14 days london to copenhagen in sept and the gem b2b 14 days . she was perfectly comfortable, and is delighted, because the very 1st thing i request from our butler is that every morning at around 7-730, he brings a pot of coffee, a pot of de-cafe and a pot of hot water for tea, and assorted sweet rolls and croissants. also breakfast and lunch in a specially designated restaurant doesnt hurt either. unless there is another issue, your daughter should reconsider, or in deference to her, you may have to forego some of the haven perks. if youre on the viva, God knows youve paid for them. when all else fails, you might try slipping the concierge or the maitre'd at least a $20.
  8. we booked copa round trip. l.a. to pty. 6hr non-stop flight for around $600 per person. price just went up. ncl jewel 1/27/2023
  9. i know i'll probably get blasted for this post, but as far as i'm concerned, if you dont get to see GSC, you ain't missin nuthin. i dont even bother to get off the ship. the very last thing i want to do is share a beach with a few 1000 of my closest friends, especially when i can have almost the entire ship to myself. i think (imho) any of the private islands owned by the cruise lines are a waste of a port stop
  10. not to worry. there is always a large sign at the door before you get off the ship, advising when the passengers need to be back, and when the crew needs to be back. so if you just make sure you read the sign you should have no trouble. some people enjoy sitting on their balconies, watching latecomers run and try to get on board just before the ship is about to sail. i believe they are affectionately referred to as "pier runners"
  11. i think if you cruise just for the shear joy of sailing, you wont be disappointed regardless of where you eat. ncl (as do other lines i'm sure) have a plethora of dining options. im sure you will be able to find at least a couple that you will enjoy. sometimes, even the buffet at dinner has some amazing choices, so just have a great time sailing and exploring. the opinions expressed herein, are strictly my own
  12. teen club is teen club. while the kids themselves may separate by age, the entourage does not. my grandson went to the entourage from 13-18 with no problems. the 1:00 curfew might be when the club closes, but the only other curfew is that imposed by you. he met a group of other kids, and they hung out at o'sheehans. a few times my wife and i had to go down there to advise the management it was ok for my grandson to be there. there is no real dress code in the haven restaurant. so long as its semi-neat. my only request of my grandson was if he was going to hang out with other kids, just to check in periodically. so, not to worry ,im sure both your kids will have a great time and you'll be lucky if you see them after embarkation, and just before disembarkation
  13. wcook.if you'd be willing to pay the cost of a haven cabin, i'm sure that the entire haven staff would welcome you with open arms, riff-raff or not. then, if you choose to tip or not to tip (that is the question) the decision is entirely up to you. the best thing about ncl, is they never, ever discriminate as to who purchases which cabins. so feel free to book a haven, and worry not about your riff-raff status
  14. imho, the ability to have the concierge get us off the ship is worth the price of admission. we have never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes to be escorted off, and taken directly to the baggage claim area. additionally, if you booked a cabin with concierge services, more than likely your luggage is in a specifically designated area, and much easier to locate. for us,it's a great perk. btw, most of the time, this is the only time i use a concierge service
  15. it really depends on what is more important to you. as soon as my wife gets on board, she rushes to the internet cafe to upgrade her minutes. i never have any need to or intention of using any wifi time, so for me any amount of minutes is irrelevant. personally i'd go with the dinners, your son, however might want to keep up with the world so he'd probably want the wifi upgrade. also consider this, depending on his age, he might find other kids his age and start hanging with t hem. if he's a teen, the entourage would be great for him. when my grandson was between 13-18 we signed him up, and only saw him occasionally. as long as he periodically checked in, it was fine
  16. if i had a chance to visit french polynesia, i would take it in a heartbeat!
  17. meanwhile, dont bother to even get off the ship. people who live on key west, "HATE" cruisers and cruise ships. and they make sure the ship doesnt stay for very long. first (and last) time i was there, some guy making those ridiculous hats out of vines, wanted to beat the crap out of me because i was standing on "his" sidewalk
  18. we were in london last year for a few days prior to sailing from southampton. before leaving the u.s., i went on google to find any type of shuttle service from our london hotel to the port. we were also on the gem a few months ago, that went from trieste to rome. the port city is citiavecchia. we had the concierge get us a shuttle to rome which is about an hour away, while it is certainly more expensive, it does do the job. just google shuttle service from southampton pier to lhr,
  19. while ive never sailed rccl, i have over 20 ncl cruises under my belt. if you want a fair comparison, it depends on what you wish to compare. there were less than a handful of times on these 20 cruises where i was disappointed with the food. i maintain, that for itineraries, and prices, ncl gives you much more bang for your buck. ive checked on the rccl cabin prices and i find that in comparison to ncl (ie the cabin size vs. price ) ncl is still an overall better deal. finally, if you stay in a haven suite, it's a totally different world, especially if your ship has a total haven complex. as ive stated before, my needs are minimal. i book for the price and itinerary (ncl seems to have some great exotic places, next december. we're sailing from dubai to mumbai) give me my kindle, a cold bottle if heineken, and ice cold can of pepsi (not COKE for god's sake) to sit on my balcony and watch the world go by, and i'm in hog's heaven
  20. ncl (although they can be accused of many faults) is really good that way. if it's at all doable, the wait staff will find a way to accomodate your veg friend. they go above and beyond the call of duty to help out.
  21. if you're prone to seasickness, and you feel it might be coming on, ask any waiter for a few slices of green apples, and drink some ginger ale. also bring some ginger candy or ginger gum with you, it's a sure fire way to combat seasickness. also, you can get bands for your wrists at any cvs, walgreens or right aid pharmacy, or see your doctor for patches that go behind the ears. the size of the ship has no bearing or relevance on whether or nor someone will get sea sick. if you do get seasick, please try and not let it affect your cruise.
  22. i still feel this is a disaster of biblical proportions (LOL) and nova scotia cruisers, a can of soda (or pop) depending on where you're from, is about $3.00. i am addicted to pepsi, and usually have 3-5 per day. it's more than worth it to me to pay this price.
  23. if all your cabins are haven suites, there should be no problem with either checking in, or getting into your garden suite if they have a key card. if the penthouse is listed as a suite, and not the haven, they will have access to the butler, concierge, designated dining room (ie cagney's or moderno) but will not be allowed access to the haven bar, or pool area, or the haven restaurant. i dont think that the jade has a specific haven restaurant or bar area, but i know it has the separate pool are for haven guests only
  24. there is always a notice (sign) posted when you get off the ship indicating what time the passengers and the crew need to be back on board
