  1. My favorite cruise stops? 1. Galapagos Islands, 1985 on a 12-16 passenger boat. 2. Antarctica, 2020 on Seabourn Quest. 3. New Island in the Falklands, 2020 on Seabourn Quest.
  2. You wait for the person(s) who just can't seem to make it back to the bus at the appointed time.
  3. Yep, I am an animal lover. Pork... Beef... Poultry... Lamb... Venison...
  4. It was easy. I paid and climbed aboard the beast of burden. People have been riding horses, mules, and donkeys for ages.
  5. I did not see children on our last two cruises, they must have been hanging out in the casino as spa, I don't use either.
  6. Would they risk airlifting a traveling companion from the ship? If I needed airlifting, I would not want my spouse risking her life just to be with me. Would anyone?
  7. Nor do I. I think you got a lot out of that 7 hours in Berlin and riding a German train is an experience in itself. I remember doing similar day trips into Chicago as a youth, the long train ride was one of the joys of the experience. Thanks for the great blog, washiotter.
  8. We enjoyed pleasant weather in January, 2015. I heard of seasick passengers our second day out. It was too cool for most passengers to sit out on the promenade deck, not for me. Coming from the Midwest in January, I toured Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego in my shirtsleeves when others were wearing coats.
  9. I would give it a 2 on the Apple Store. I can't remember all the glitches. I know that I received reminders of shipboard activities I had flagged long after the activity had ended. Dining menus were occasionally wrong. The Navigator app is practically required, it ought to work flawlessly.
  10. If you want passport stamps go to Africa. A world cruiser reported that he filled up his passport by crossing back and forth between Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa and Namibia and having his passport stamped at each entry and exit after waiting in line for the formalities. I ordered the fifty page passport in the hope that I could have similar experiences.
  11. I advise against this. You do not want a postmark stamp instead of an immigration stamp on your passport, it might be considered defacement of your passport. We cruised from Chile to Buenos Aires in 2020, received stamps from Chile and the Falkland Islands, nothing from Uruguay or Argentina.
  12. Staff seems to direct all passengers to the Lido and away from the dining room for lunch on embarkation day and may claim that the dining room is closed when it is not. You have to check for yourself.
  13. This used to be standard operating practice during Holland America's debarkation talks. Remember when? I rarely take part in surveys. HAL's are way too long.
  14. A "real" drink is liquor with or without water (frozen and/or liquid, still or fizzy). A drink becomes fru fru any time you add soda pop, fruit, a vegetable, liqueur, syrup, or a vegetable. If a Tom Collins has syrup, lemon juice and a cherry it is fru fru to the third degree, no umbrella required.
  15. Wish I had originated the term. We heard it from fellow cruiser Paula who had an in with the cruise staff. Nothing like finding that the one good photo of you is marred by a bright pink sticker. Dork dots are what photo editing was made for.
  16. Verizon wasn't supposed to send that message until after the invasion.
  17. July 1986, six nights on the 12 passenger boat San Pedro around the Galapagos Islands. Fellow guests were from Brazil, Italy and the Netherlands. Had a great time in basic accommodations with incredible wildlife viewing, but not the kind of trip to get one hooked on ocean cruising. Our second cruise was down the Danube from Vienna to the Black Sea (almost) on the Romanian boat Donau Stern. Our eleven month old son was a hit with the crew. A fellow passenger had the film confiscated from his camera for taking a photo of a passenger plane at the airport. Six months later Romanian leader Ceaușescu was overthrown. Our first typical ocean cruise was on the short lived Seawind Cruise Line, seven days from Aruba, our ten month old daughter's first cruise.
  18. They may well be the welcome you get from the cat upon your return. Butch will wonder why Sundance is so excited to see you. This has been a great blog, shark b8. Thanks so much for the regular updates. I admire you stick-to-it-iveness.
  19. You might contact Seabourn for special dispensation to cruise with a bike like that and with mention of the previous blog. I understand Seabourn's position as I had an oafish dorm mate who scuffed up walls every time he carried his bike through the dorm. He scuffed up people less often.
  20. Great work, POA1, thank you. I opened the PDF file in Apple's Preview app instead of my browser and used Preview's search function to find my desired ship.
  21. I did not find a nonstop flight. You have to add in time to change planes.
  22. Excursions? We toured from Puerto Montt to see Petrohué Falls, more like a rapids in my book, never saw one that cut through a narrow channel like that. A half dozen tour buses shared that experience. Much more impressive was the view of snow capped, conical Mount Osorno viewed from Puerto Varas across Lake Llanquihue. Absolutely beautiful sight, my first conical volcano, as close to a religious experience as I am likely to have. Montevideo was a favorite city. Take the hop on/off bus tour, stroll the city, and eat a steak cooked over a wood fired grill.
