Beer. It's not just for breakfast anymore.

Welcome to Cruise Critic, Joannmutch. My condolences on the death of your husband. While Cruise Critic won't let you find a roommate, there is plenty of information to be found for solo cruisers. Cabins for solos can be affordable, even double cabins for one. I hope the lack of a roommate won't keep you from cruising.

BTimmer's Almost Live Grand South America 10/7/23 -12/19/2023
whogo replied to Btimmer's topic in Holland America Line
Seriously, great live report and blog, BTimmer. It makes sense to provide the gifts at the beginning, you can use them through the cruise. Personally, I have too much stuff already and would rather not have any gifts. -

"If you would care to keep the items, you account will be charged..." -
That is hilarious.

Good move. I am surprised at how few cruisers take this option when facing unacceptable conditions.

Are warnings sent out to cell phones in Israel, something like the Emergency Alert System in the USA?

Really miss the Lincoln Center experience
whogo replied to cruzer0007's topic in Holland America Line
I think that classical music fans are a small percentage of HAL cruisers. I thought it was nice of HAL to have Lincoln Center, not that I was interested in listening. The Lincoln Center performances I saw were in a small area along a sometimes noisy corridor. I won't miss the classical quartet, trio, duo or soloist. -
I am trying to forget the almost mandatory disembarkation meeting in the showroom with pleas for excellent ratings on the post cruise survey.

They used to leave a couple of Holland America postcards in your cabin, too, with more available for free from the front desk. I sent out a bunch of them back in the day.

Any reason to bring Covid Vaccine Record onboard?
whogo replied to FlaMariner's topic in Holland America Line
Yes. You never know what foreigners may want. -
Six for me, too: Seawind*, Regent*, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Holland America, Seabourn.

CC Shortcuts for Dear Wife, Dear Son, etc.

I generally don't care who the D is referring to, "somebody" is close enough. -
I did not know my cabin was a suite until after the cruise when I saw I received a suite bonus in the line's loyalty program. I missed the opportunity to stick my nose in the air and announce that I was returning to my suite of room.

Agreed. Penthouse and owner's are idiotic descriptions, too. I call each of them a cabin, even stateroom seems too grand.

How Important is Having a Mobile Phone Onboard?

How Important is Having a Mobile Phone Onboard?
whogo replied to mckath's topic in Holland America Line
I am with The-Inside-Cabin on this one, it is wise to have a smart phone while ashore for mapping and emergencies. If you carry one ashore, why not download the app and see if it is of use to you aboard? You can survive without one. Bill and Mary Ann eschew phones, have done world cruises without and are currently posting about their 77 day cruise: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2961723-from-cool-alaska-to-the-balmy-south-pacific-sail-with-bill-mary-ann-on-the-volendam-9-6-23-to11-22-23-77-days/?do=getNewComment
