We haven't been on the Golden since a Mexican trip in 1996. :classic_ohmy:

I'm like you. I always try to go on the new of the new. However, you couldn't beat the price on the Golden for Alaska season. To my surprise, it felt like home like the rest of the princess fleet. Grant you it was missing the spoiled convinced of luxuries I'm use to on Regal. Honestly speaking, the crew onboard are what made my trip. They were a phenomenal bunch, especially the AMAZING matri'd Carlos, and Captain Pears!

  2. Honestly, I've always booked nothing but balcony on all my cruises. When j decided to extend my Alaskan cruise an extra week, while I was onboard, the only cabin available was an interior. Extremely nervous since I've never had an interior ever. Honest though, it was probably the BEST sleep I ever got. It was like my cozy little quaint cottage.

Well at least you know that the AC & mattresses will most likely be better on the newer ships (and more importantly, the FOOD).

I told my DH we should avoid the older ships as much as possible although we went back to the Crown a few months ago & all was fine.

Best part was, I was in the Golden for 4 weeks of sailing prior to the CB. The Golden being a much older ship than the other, I had better experiences onboard in certain areas. Go figure. Once again, I'm just simply grateful and blessed I cruise as often as I do.

Most of the people on the CB get acceptable AC from what I've been reading but like yourself we got a bad cabin & were miserable for 10 days. There was nothing they could do to fix it or even move us to another cabin since the ship was filled.

This was the second time we've had problems with AC on Princess ships- Both older ships like the CB.

Funny you mention a cabin change. I as well went straight down to request one for the ac and bed issues. I got no where. first time I've ever dealt with purser's desk, as I never have anything to complain about they were unhelpful, and dvrnsughrd at my issues. I'm blessed that After my 70 princess cruises run this was the first problem I've ever encountered on one of their sailings. I'm just happy I get to cruise. Hello Sky and Enchanted in the upcoming months. Hehehe

We have 14 day Caribbean booked over the holidays on CB. Getting very concerned about this! What side a vibrations again? Port or starboard? We are in 2 Caribe balconies in aft section (not directly aft though).

The vibration was felt on the the starboard side of the ship. But honestly I only felt it up on the lido deck. I had traditional dining down at the palms which was on deck 6 aft. Only when they started the engines and was getting the ship to initially pull out of port you could hear the loud thrusters. Otherwise very smooth sailing.

  6. Yup. I was on the same exact cruise. Noticed the same thing on the lido, when I would eat lunch on the side with salty dog. OMG. That vibration drove me nuts. I joked about how I definitely didn't recall putting a quarter in vibration machine while eating lunch. Had to get up to move to the other side of the ship my slice. That dude you didn't feel it. Like you said, same issue inside by the buffet. I remember 5 yrs ago on the Caribbean when it had engine issues. Thought all of this including propellers would have been fixed during the big Reno. Hmmm.

  7. I was on the same exact sailing. My Oceanview cabin the carpet was so in bad shape, you can tell they tried replacing in certain areas as they had huge cute marks throughout the carpet. You also could tell how bulged and unleveled it was and you could feel the plywood beneath.

The AC in my cabin was not great. Oh so warm , even with the curtains closed throughout the day. Woke up every morning in a deep sweat. The beds had not support (I've been on regal a more than a handful of times as well as the golden with new luxury mattress) these were clearly not the new mattresses. Would sink right down the middle. It was super flimsy. They tried their best to give support, but did not succeed.

On a happy note, had the most lovely cabin Steward 🙂

Most likely you heard about people saving a block of seats for their family and friends. Which is against the rules and lead to fights, but that is a different thread.

Ooops. I completely made a mistake and did not mean to write the word only I meant to write the word not know they do not reserve seats.

  9. I'm the queen with The Medallion it. The cheapest form to do it it specially if your Elite wait till embarkation day when you get on the ship it's actually cheaper I like $6-$8 compared to the pre-cruise purchase that claims to be the cheapest. I've done it several times on the Regal and it has not failed. And planning to do the same today when I leave on the Caribbean Princess.

I am looking at taking a one way cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage in May of 2020. The itinerary on the Princess website shows the ship arriving in Anchorage at 12:30am.  What time do we disembark?

Just came back from several weeks sailing Alaska from Anchorage to Vancouver. When you disembark the ship from Anchorage yes the ship does arrive at the port at 12:30 a.m. however they don't start getting people off until about 6:30 a.m. as you have to wait for the tunnel to open up where the buses can drive in and out of. They have a very good system on getting people around and about. Cuz keep in mind with Anchorage they don't leave the port on embarkation day till 8:30 in the evening as there's so many people if not like 95% of the ship who has to travel by bus to get in or by train. when I disembarked from Anchorage I was the last group to get off at a very late flight in the evening so I got up around 9:30 AM. Got to have a relaxing morning and breakfast in the main dining room.

  11. Thank God it's NOT first come first serve and no reservations needed. I've heard about reservations on other cruise lines for shows which I am not a fan of as I like to meander around and if I pop into a show I pop into a show. on a vacation you shouldn't need to work off of a schedule it should be relaxed which is why I love the princess line

I Don;t,know we usually just walk down to baggage claim and look for the Princess people.   That being said light rail is cheap fast and a very short walk from baggage claim to the station and from the downtown station to the port.

Ah. Ok. Only asking as I have a super, super early arrival time.

I get motion sickness on winding roads as well. I use the TransdermScop patch to avoid seasickness. If I was worried about the land trip to the ship I would just apply my patch earlier. Since you do get motion sickness don't you have something you use on the ship that can help you with the land trip?

I plan on doubling up on my bonine. Funny thing my motion sickness is mainly car sickness and a little flight. Ships, I feel nothing. Hence why cruising is my favorite form of transportation.nhelps to to live FLL right my the cruise port. ,😉

Check in does not start until 12:30 at the earliest in Whittier. No need to be on the first bus of the day.

Last May I took the privately-booked Alaska Railroad train that arrives shortly after Noon at Whittier. Those of us from that train appeared to be the first passengers to arrive. No buses had arrived as yet. Since the bus ride is just a hair over 90 minutes vs. 2 hrs 20 min on the train I would guess the first buses leave just before lunchtime.

Now if you are asking because you wish to reserve a pre-cruise private tour in Whittier, based on what I have seen on the Alaska board here, combined with my own experience above, is that you need an individual private transfer to make sure you are on time.

@fishywood which way do you recommend. Train or bus? I'll be honest I do get motion sickness sometime in cars, so trying to find something that's easy on on twists and turns.
