  1. Do you know if the traffic bottlenecks on the way into the Port on Saturdays? We'll be sailing on the Reflection on March 18.

Last year we sailed on Princess out of Port Everglades and our under 5 mile Uber ride ended up costing $50+ due to the bottleneck.

We took Lyft from Mia airport and it cost us $13.50 plus tip and no traffic at all going in and going past other ship terminals !

  2. Hi there...

    quick question please...

we will do a 4 dinner package while on our 14 night cruise...

seems to me ...if you book online...they give you the first night a reservation for one of the restaurants. Does anyone know if you wait and book on board....is the price the same or lower than the online price ? and as well-

We would prefer to eat in the main dinning room the first night.

We are on the Eclipse if that matters.

    thanks all

    Brockmom

You can book the first or second night and pick the place. After that you book the rest when you get on the ship. One of the problems is you could have a problem getting the day or time you want when you board because people can book on line way ahead of the cruise. They also offer discounts for first night dinning or sometimes during the cruise for other dinning venues. It is sort of pick your poison! If you wait til you get on I would book as soon as you board ! On my cruise last Dec they offered 20% on dinning on line 4 months before the cruise so you have a lot of choices! Bob

  3. Hello all,

We are going in March on the Silouette and saw this excursion in my planner for our stop in St Thomas.

It's says St-Jhon on your own for $39.

Overview of what is in for the price :

Immerse yourself in St. John’s culture, history, and pristine natural wonders on this self-guided exploration of St. John’s treasures. Begin your adventure with a scenic ferry journey along St. Thomas’s spectacular southern coast. St. Thomas is two-thirds National Park land. You’ll have four hours to discover the island’s pristine coastlines, wilderness, and culture. Bask on a white sand beach, snorkel the clear waters of Trunk Bay, or unwind in the warm sunshine. Visit the Arawak archeological site and uncover the island’s fascinating past. For over a thousand years the island has been home to many civilizations. Or, revel in St. Thomas’s modern charms browsing the boutiques and shops at Cruz Bay. Later, a private ferry awaits to take you back to the ship, passing St. Thomas’s coves, hotels, stunning coast, and luxury villas.

Is that possible ? Has anyone done it via the ship ?

If I recall the last time I did it on my own without the ship it rounded up pretty much the same price as listed.

My actual question is why would I do it on my own if the ship has it down to a reasonable price now.

    Thanks all

    Eric

We did a catmaran trip to St. John's. The island is really beautiful and the trip over is fun. I can't imagine that your trip is only $39. It looks like they are only offering the ferry over and that's it. Does it tell you about transportation from the dock to the ferry site which is either downtown or at a harbor about 20 min. away ?

  4. We'll be visiting San Juan in April on Reflection and also have the later port time.

Plenty of time to visit at least one of the forts there? Does anyone know how late they're open?

Old town is open til around 6:00 P.M. !

  5. Celebrity is famous for doing that . They did it on our cruise this last Dec. Dropped the price in Oct about $550 for our Cat. I called and they offered us a upgrade to Aqua class but on a Guarantee and I was not giving up my hump cabin on this cruise for a cabin I did know where it was located!

  6. We are sailing on the Allure in early April. I am having a difficult time finding an appropriate excursion that my 2 children (8 and 13) and myself would like to participate in. Has anyone ever done the Bamboo Beach Club VIP package with Royal and if so is it worth the money (114 USD pp)? This includes the falls as well.

    Thanks

We just did it in Dec on the Reflection. It was a nightmare and the worst time we have ever had. The falls is o.k. but it is like a cattle call. They told us they run 10,000 people a day. The Bamboo beach club is a joke. It consist of a dirt road through trees to a beach clearing with a few small buildings. The food is awful and also the beach is nasty. you will have about 2 Hrs if you are lucky.Only half of us got any food during the time we were there. The bus ride is 1 1/2 hrs each way and we got back 1/2 hr late to the ship which they held for us. They had charged us $198 which the 20% discount for booking on line. When we got back on the ship all of the 30 to 40 people want to the excursion desk to voice are displeasure and they refunded all the money. I could go into more detail if you want but please take my word for it. If anything take the falls tour only ! It is anything but VIP ! Bob

  7. I was on Reflection in Dec and I was up every morning @ 6:00 A.M. and had the track almost to myself . Did 3 Miles and want to the gym and then finished with the Persian Spa and changed and want to breakfast ! In the afternoon I also want to the Persian Spa in late afternoon before dinner. This works really well for me and I really do not eat any more than at home. It's all called "Living Healthy " Bob

  8. We were on Reflection in Dec and the night life was really hopping every night. They have not one but two DJ's on the ship and theme party's almost every night. The 80's disco night was jammed with people on all 3 levels. One of the reasons I had not sailed with them prior to this cruise that the nights on the ship seemed low key. But, when I saw they changed the entertainment director 2 years ago and saw and read some blogs we took a chance and it worked out fine for us. Everyone has their own like's and dislike's so it all depends on what you are looking for. I had sailed Princessthe last 3 cruises and found that the nights on their ships were really low energy for us ! Too each his own ! Bob

  9. I cannot recommend this excursion at all. I was on the December 3-10 Reflection sailing.

We did this excursion and while Dunns River Falls was fun (the water was freezing, though), the Bamboo Beach Club left a whole lot to be desired. DRF was very crowded, so we were only at the BBC for 2 hours. It rained and there was nowhere to go to stay out of the rain other than on overhang of a bar. The food was barely edible and the drinks were awful. Our two hostesses were trying very hard to serve the 38 people on our excursion but had a hard time keeping up with no help from anyone else at the club. The beach loungers were dirty and the beach was just ok. I figured that the BBC would be similar to a place we saw in Cozumel with an open bar, a nice beach and pool and a buffet area to get food. Nope, not at all. The drinks were brought out to us on trays by the hostess and we really had no choice on what we wanted. Some people were just getting their food when it was time to leave. We ended up being late to the ship and had a driver from he##, as well as them switching the bus we were on before without telling anyone!

In all honesty, I do not know where the VIP part came from as it was NOT VIP. They did have a cash bar and another area for non-VIP people but our area wasn't any nicer at all. I would've liked to have chosen my drinks from a bar and would have liked to have had a buffet area to eat instead of watching these two hostesses struggling to get us all fed and watered!

Someone mentioned that you could do an all-day at Sandals for, I think, $75 and that is what I would do if I go back to Jamaica on a cruise ship.

We ended up going to the excursions area and got most of our money back, as the BBC part was so bad.

We were on the same excursion. Everything that Katmandu2 is corrected. I could add more but it serves no purpose. The worse excursion for us ever. The cruise line did refund all of are money on this cruise ! Bob

  10. We plan on booking a 2018 Celebrity sailing while we are on a Royal ship in March. If I try to book online, it says a $900 deposit is due. Will it be a lesser deposit if we book onboard? We are diamond with Royal and always book a balcony.

    Thanks

We just booked on Reflection for 2017 and the deposit was only $100 P.P. for a 10 day ! We got two perks plus $200 O.B.C . When we got back I turned it over to a T.A. and got one more perk plus a dinner for two! So we ended up with 3 perks plus O.B.C. It does pay to book on board!

  11. Plenty; I used to exclusively book excursions through the cruise line. After I became a regular on Cruise Critic I learned from others about the benefits/advantages of booking privately. Had a couple cruises with very active roll calls and some wonderful, extremely knowledgeable people who organized some amazing private excursions. Saw so much more than on any cruise line excursion I'd ever been on, was MUCH smaller groups, incredible guides - we saw everything the equivalent ship excursion saw, but arrived before the masses and were able to do a lot more since there wasn't so much waiting around for the last person to meander back to the coach bus. Also no lengthy shopping stops at lame venues paying the ship a kickback for the stop. Lunch breaks were spent at venues popular with locals, not tourists. Much more 1:1 time to chat with the guide and ask questions (because of the small group). Chances to tweak and customize the itinerary. All these advantages and generally the cost was significantly cheaper than the equivalent cruise excursion. I was skeptical at first (and a bit nervous my first few private excursions), but the difference in quality and value proved to be night and day based on my experiences.

Last time I did a cruise ship excursion was a few years ago on my Holy Land cruise. Had booked privately with a reputable vendor in Egypt, but the port was cancelled because of unrest a few weeks before the cruise. One replacement port (Crete) was not frequently called upon by cruise ships and I was unable to find anything privately that was appealing; booked what seemed the best on paper the cruise ship was offering and was a miserable experience, painstakingly slow pace, boring guide, stops at tourist traps etc. etc. (would have had a much better time staying aboard).

Sure booking with the cruise line is right for some people and does have some advantages (especially for certain ports and/or certain excursions), but for most people and most ports if one is willing to do a little research the clear overall advantage goes to the privately booked excursions. This is why when I encounter threads about shore excursions I always point out my feelings; I am very grateful when I was new to Cruise Critic that I was able to benefit from others' advice on this important topic.

    Well said !

  12. We just got off on Dec 10 and loved everything about the ship. We ate 4 different Spec. Restu. and loved all of them. Only ate in Select dinning 2 nights. The Lawn Club was a lot of fun and my wife cooked both dinners . Murano's was the best of all of them and Qusine was really different and we loved the food !. Have a great time and don't be afraid to try any of them ! Bob

  13. As I said ,we were on the same excursion and the only reason we booked on the ship was that it was Falmouth, Jamaica and I have read a lot of stories about this port and going outside the gates. Once we left on the bus and traveled on the bus we felt we made the right choice. Going on a 1 1/2 hr ride both ways was enough to make sure if anything happened we were covered, which ended up as the right thing to do!

  14. Are you saying you took a Lyft from the port of Miami to Ft. Lauderdale for $13.50?

Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app

That is correct ! I did it both directions and tipped the drivers $5. In fact at home that night the ride by cab to my house is $30 to $35 but it cost me $20 plus tip with lyft. On their app you can get the cost of the trip by type of car and where you are going before you order. They picked me up no longer than 5 minutes each time. You wont be sorry! Bob

  15. I thought select dining was for those who do not want one of the 2 traditional dining times, not what dining room you eat in. I chose select because it was my only choice at booking, but made reservations for 6:00 every night. Does dinner really take 2 hours though? I chose earliest time so I wont miss the shows. Should I choose a different time?

We picked 7 and never finished before 9 . We only ate 2 nights in MDR but had same table and waiter ea. night. The service was not the best and the selection of food was not great. We loved the Spec. dinning !

  16. Just came off Reflection a couple of week's ago and never had any problems with select dinning. We booked 4 months out for our time and it worked perfectly. We did only eat twice at MDR since i had booked 4 Spec. dinners. I was not a real fan of the Mdr menu or the service but the time slot worked for us!

  17. What excursion did you do?

I saw that sale and know we could have saved even more, but we had the OBC.

It was the Dunn River falls and VIP beach Day! I payed $189 for two with the 20% and the actual Price was $229. The Falls were good and crowded and it took longer than expected so we got to the beach around 1:00.That left us 2 hrs to swim and eat lunch. They were running around trying to get the food for us plus it was raining off and on. The food was really bad and it took some of 1 1/2 hrs to get served. The drinks were watered down. They loaded us up around 2:15 to get back to the ship which is 1hr and 15 min back. The only problem was that the original bus was gone and so was some of the peoples bags and other stuff. They never took it off the bus. Thank god I had our stuff with us. The ship was due to sail at 4 and we raced back to the ship and got back at 4:15 and the topper was they dropped us off at the Oasis dock and not ours. All of us ran to the ship and finally made it on board. Later in the day they told all of us that Celebrity was giving all of our money back from the excursion. I was really impressed with the cruise line for doing that ! Almost all of the people on this tour filed complaints with the Excursion desk so it was a no brainer for them. With all that money going back to all of us I am sure they are looking into this vendor! Bob
