  1. I'm having one of those days where I wish I was at Mamsens! At least with the cup in my house I can pretend.
  2. This is a wonderful topic to start & will be interesting to read what others share. First let say that I don't believe there is one favorite crew member, as each person is unique in their own way. Both of my Viking Ocean sailings were TA,s aboard Viking Sky three months apart, December 2019 & March 2020. To my great delight many of the crew were the same. To be warmly greeted by Giovanni(Guest Relations Manager) rushing up to me & giving me a hug, "Welcome back Mr. Smith!", pier side at check in was a phrase I heard repeatedly during my second sailing. At every turn I was treated like family or royalty. I almost got the impression that I owned the ship but the truth is that this is the standard of most of the crew. Everyone is treated equal on this line. So here is my Viking Sky All Star - Most Outstanding in no particular order : Rose - The Restaurant Deny - The Restaurant Thandeka - The Restaurant Ariel - The Restaurant Yuri - The Restaurant Praveen - The Restaurant Giovanni - Guest Relations Manager Sasha - Bar Service These people put their heart & soul into their work & are responsible for creating lifetime memories of wonderful times at sea. As such, I'm a big believer in writing thank you letters of commendation to the Hotel General Manager & Tellus@Viking.com. so these employees can be recognized & rewarded by management. With conditions as they are in the world & cruise industry itself, the entire Viking organization is in my thoughts and prayers, most particularly for the onboard crew.
  3. Oh my, that's a spendid idea. I bought my Mamsens cup on my Viking Sky crossing in December, just so I'd have a piece of Viking in my home. The upper level of the Explorers Lounge is my favorite "perch". Truth be told, the whole ship(s) is so beautiful it's hard to have a favorite as each public room has its unique ambiance. Explorers Lounge, The Living Room, The Wintergarden, The Restaurant all hold warm cozy thoughts. Having longer itineraries can let a person to feel that they've moved in. I know I did. So this being an open topic of conversation let me mention what a pleasure it is to experience the family like warm camaraderie between fellow passengers & crew that quickly develops on Viking ship. Words can not express how pampering & pleasant the hard working crew are. I've been treated like royalty, & almost got the impression that I owned the ship. In all my years of cruising I've never experienced a more congenial group of fellow passengers. My last cruise(Viking Sky - March 6th) I sailed as a solo. Never once was I left alone. Every meal, every day it was a dizzying delight of a social whirlwind! Yay! The Viking experience truly feels like a family. As such, in these unprecedented challenging times my thoughts & prayers are for the whole Viking organization. For my fellow Viking passengers i hope that you are home safe with your family & loved ones. God willing, we shall meet on another Viking ship!
  4. Snuffie, thank you for posting this! I was aboard the last sailing which turned around mid Atlantic. Unofficial rumor aboard the ship was that she would quickly refuel after all passengers disembarked in Miami then sail straight up then cross directly to Norway. My concern, thoughts, & daily prayers are for the crew. I know there are several aboard who were ending their contracts at Barcelona.
  5. Ernie - that's wonderful you'll be crossing on the Queen Victoria! I hope you have a grand time. My Cunard sailings have been enjoyable & I too love the Old Guard feeling of sailing that line. I've crossed on Queen Mary II & would like to try Queen Victoria/Elizabeth some time. The refurb of Queen Mary II was awesome to experience first hand. We spent a lot of time in the new Carinthia Lounge(Good riddance Wintergarden!) Sounds like you're leaning towards giving The Scarlet Lady a try, pool issue be dammed ! Your perspectives will be interesting. Bon Voyage & safe travels to you.
  6. Yes, ships, planes, trains, & cars! It was the era of "Airport", "Silver Streak", "The Big Bus", & "The Love Boat". The Sitmar Experience brochure was THE BEST, VERY detailed deck plans. The Royal Viking Atlas was crisply cool in a very Scandinavian way. You work for an airline, I'm a train attendant with Amtrak. I don't see myself on a Virgin Voyages anytime soon as it's definitely not my cup of tea; but next week I set sail on another Transatlantic crossing aboard Viking Sky, Miami to Barcelona. 14 nights of Viking Ocean bliss! I did the Lisbon to Miami in December & the whole experience was so extraordinary I knew I had to repeat soon! I posted a photo album in Member Photos.
  7. Yes, I've seen your Flickr page! Wonderful picture documentary of your years at sea. I admire your reverence for all things maritime! I mean Home Lines out of New York, Statendam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Fairsea in the '80's! Then the fact that you sailed aboard Fairsea then worked aboard Fair Princess ! The Pacific/Island Princess twin sisters were also special to me(sorely missed!). Being from California my grandparents & aunts always cruised Sitmar but family in Queens always cruised Home Lines. Most boys my age poured over comic books, but I always had the latest annual brochures for Sitmar, Princess, Royal Viking Line, Home Lines, & Royal Caribbean - studied each ships deck plan for hours on end !

  9. If only they'd build exact replicas of the T.S.S. Fairsea/Fairwind ! Knowing that you enjoy cruise travel so much, I implore you to give Viking Ocean a whirl. It's a cruise & ship product that must be experienced ! I think of it as a modern throwback to Royal Viking Line, but more comfortably casual.
  10. Yes, I agree Ernie. A proper swimming pool is a requirement for me. Sitmar had the best ! The infinity pools on Viking Ocean are fantastic.
  11. I' ve jumped ship to Viking Ocean. My Viking Sky Transatlantic crossing in December blew the HAL/Princess situation out of the water! Stellar food, service, crew, onboard ambiance. Absolutely zero onboard marketing! Thinking I'd "give 'em one more try", my last sailings aboard Veendam & Crown Princess were too hit & miss regarding various issues with food, service, crew. I sailed aboard Koningsdam two years ago & concluded that HAL just isn't offering the cruise product I'm seeking anymore. I didn't like that ship at all. It's sad to see both beloved cruise lines become shadows of their former selves. I get the impression that Princess is definitely trying harder in all aspects of their operation, but the newbuilds are too big.
  12. Viking Sky sailed into port just as I reached the waterfront during a walking tour the day before our departure. I turned a corner, looked out to the shore, & suddenly Viking Sky sailed by. My heart skipped a beat, as it does every cruise when I catch that first glimpse of "my ship". Thank you Viking Ocean for creating the best cruise experience I've ever had in 30 years of cruising. The crew, service, ship, food, & ambiance aboard far exceeded my expectations. How blessed & grateful I am for this voyage !
  13. Lisbon is one of my favorite cities in Europe.
  14. Transatlantic crossings are my favorite sailing itinerary because of all the sea days! For me the Viking Sky was the destination. And what a destination she is! The fact that this crossing missed Ponta Delgada & Hamilton were of no consequence to me.
  15. Afternoon Tea, where strangers become friends.
