  1. I also have very sensitive skin. After a discussion with a Club Orange customer service person onboard, who assured me that they are very aware of skin allergies and use “fragrance free and sensitive skin soaps,” I gave it a try and was very pleased. No problems whatsoever with the laundry, sheets or towels on our 21-day cruise.
  2. My husband uses distilled water for a 2x day medical sinus rinse. We preordered a gallon prior to our 21 day cruise. When he needed more, they could not deliver for several days and he could not find any in port (Norway-UK cruise). We spoke to guest services every day to report it was urgent and a medical necessity. Finally, I ran into the hotel manager and he got it delivered to our cabin same day. Since then, we empty several new small drinking water bottles and fill them with distilled water at home, plastic wrap under cap and in zip loc baggies, put in checked luggage. We at least have some supply when we arrive at our destination.
  3. My husband and I were on the Nieuw Statendam in an inside cabin on main deck last summer. We were on a back to back Norway/UK cruise of 21 days with several tender ports. This was our first time in an inside cabin and also our first time getting club orange which we got because of all the tender ports and for the separate dining room. We thought club Orange was fabulous just for the separate dining room. The tender line for club Orange was on the main deck by the elevators, but it was not clearly communicated to those with the club Orange benefit. If you are taking a ships tour you gather in the lounge and then they take you all together for the tender whether or not you have club Orange. Since we were on a back to back, we got two fabulous club orange tote bags, with a choice of the special anniversary bag or the club orange bag. We chose the two club orange bags. we thought the inside cabin on main deck was just fine, very convenient to the main theater, dining rooms, and the music walk. The only time we used the elevator was to go up to the Lido or the pool.
  4. Going to Alaska in August on the Nieuw Amsterdam with grandsons 6 & 9. Are the ranger programs held in Club HAL?
  5. There were four of us traveling. All of us thought the food was pretty good. For the breakfast and lunch buffets we tried to get seating just to the right of the entrance; we liked our waiter Christophe in that section We found some of the other table set ups to be difficult to get in and out to get our food for the buffets. There is a cooked to order egg station at breakfast and a carving station at lunch. For dinner when they serve you, it doesn’t matter where you sit. We did not eat in the pizza restaurant. There are jars of candy in the back of the lounge area. There was so much food and beverages I never looked for a snack. In the bar, they serve you some munchies like pretzels and chips with your cocktail. A couple times there were passed hors d’oeuvres in the lounge area. There were cookies available at the coffee station on the second deck. The cocktails and wine were really free flowing. You can order a cocktail from your dining room table if you would like one in addition to your wine with dinner.
  6. Just back from our cruise on the SS Venezia. There are two sets of laundry equipment on the lowest deck and an ironing board. You go to reception to get a pod to put in the washer. The self serve laundry was very popular. I also used their laundry service, which was great.
  7. Has Morimoto’s taken over Tamarind? I made a reservation for Tamarind a few weeks ago for our August cruise. Now I see they have noted “delivered to dining room” on my reservation details. That will not be nearly as fun.
  8. So glad to find this topic! We are doing a family cruise on the NA in August. My six year old grandson was just asking me this morning if the kids’ pool (Lido Pool) has a shallow section for him. We looked at some photos. It seems like there is an Acapulco shelf, but not a shallow end. Photos show adults in the pool with water up to their shoulders. Would appreciate it if someone would check this out for him!
  9. Trying to reduce my packing. We will be on the Uniworld Milan and Venice itinerary on the SS Venezia, after doing land trip on our own. Anyone used their laundry service who can advise the cost per item or by the bag? I know there is a self-service option, but would rather send it out. Uniworld response to my email said they would let us know on board. Not a helpful answer. Thanks.
  10. I am usually ok on a cruise just using Ginger Chews and drinking one ginger ale a day, but I go prepared with relief band (worked on my 9 year old grandson), and sea bands. The first time I used Bonine I was sick in the hotel room before even leaving. I used trans derm scopolamine a few times until I figured out why I was extremely sick after taking it off (severe withdrawal, icky!) I recommend trying any drug before you leave. Also, go to a low deck midship if it is really rocky.
  11. This is bad news for me. I always book an inside midship lower deck cabin, because I get motion sickness I pay extra for that choice.
  12. I carry Chimes ginger chews original flavor and drink ginger ale. Have a ginger chew before I anticipate a problem. Have also freely dispensed them to fellow passengers. On a recent excursion in a mini-bus, a new acquaintance was feeling very sick. She had a ginger chew and was feeling fine within a few minutes. The chew package is a little hard to open, so sometimes I carry one out of its package in a baggie for easier, quick use, Other brands are available, but these work for me.
  13. I buy a can of waterproof spray and do our fabric sport shoes, my hat, purse and his daypack. Dry outside or in garage for overnight and we’re good to go.
  14. From the HIA info on my upcoming cruise: “Signature Beverage Package part of Offer has a daily limit of 15 beverages and only includes beverages priced at $11.00 or less. Guest cannot pay the difference between limit and beverage amount.” Some of you were able to pay the difference though? My daughter would like the HIA. She will have her 6 year old son in her cabin. How is it charged if the second guest is underage? Alaska 7 day on Nieuw Amsterdam.
  15. I am also doing this cruise this Spring. I wanted to take our friends to the Milan Duomo rooftop. You can buy tickets that take you up by elevator, but you have to do the stairs down 251 steps with no handrails. So we will be skipping that. We did it many years ago when we were younger, and it was wonderful, but now it isn’t worth the risk of a fall. I tried working out the times for sightseeing on our own, but UniWorld says we can only find out the schedule after we arrive at the hotel. I did ask and the city sightseeing only goes to the outside of the castle, so we will try to go inside on our own. As to wardrobe, I’ll be wearing black pants and a blouse to dinner, tops a little dressier for the welcome and goodbye dinners.
  16. Does the Nieuw Amsterdam have soft serve ice cream machines in the Lido? I know that regular scooped ice cream can have nut products transferred via the scoop or the water bucket they use to rinse the scoop between flavors.
  17. Thank you. I didn’t intend to cause controversy. Obviously. Peace out everybody. I am getting off your lawn now.
  18. Thank you both. We were assigned any time dining, which I was able to change to early fixed dining through customer service. Yes, we will fill out the necessary forms well ahead of time, thanks for mentioning that. Our grandson is well educated about his allergy and would not eat anything without checking first. He doesn’t need special foods, just items without nuts. My goal is to identify food that is ok for him so that he will not feel left out. He has a little brother who does not have any allergies. The brother is also great about asking if something has nuts, looking out for the older one, which is very sweet! If the Lido manager can point out or give us a list, that will be a fabulous start (we would confirm with the server, too).
  19. Well, this is why I hesitated to ask the question and why I asked specifically for practical advice. No, I do not mean to imply that no one on the ship can have nuts. That would be ridiculous and not be practical. I know that others have dealt with allergies and that we can take precautions. I appreciate the advice to consult with the Lido manager. My grandson will always have an epipen on him although thankfully we have never needed to inject him. Now, how do I have this post removed?
  20. We have booked an Alaskan cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam for August. Our 9 year old grandson has an allergy to all nuts. We have fixed dining, and I am comfortable with working with our waiter. Question is how to be sure in Lido and other venues. Practical advise from others would be appreciated!
  21. Yes and there are coat hooks already on the wall that can hold heavy items. Otherwise you can use the clothesline in the shower.
