THANK YOU for the offer of assistance.

We are walkers, so hoping the June weather is as dry as it apparently was last year.   Using Google Maps and the York Visitor Center Chocolate Trail map, I've put together a walking itinerary (and always remain flexible).

Here's the basic plan - not planning to visit inside ALL of these, unless there is plenty of time.  Any recommendations on which are best / which inside visits can be skipped. Hope to arrive in York station around 10-10:15 and would like to head back to the ship on a train around 17:30 (but we are flexible).   So basically around 7 hours in York.

    The plan:
Start at Visitor Center - York Minster - Holy Trinity Church - York Chocolate Story - Barley Hall - sights around St. Helen's Square - the Shambles - Jorvik Viking Centre -  Fairfax House - Cliffords Tower - Castle Museum - Jacobs Well, Trinity Lane - All Saints Church, North Street.

    Your advice truly welcomed!!  Cheers!

    Marilyn

I would make some time for the National Railway Museum, I only went as I had time to kill but very much wished I had longer. It’s by the station so easy to get to.

Long story short: we booked 3 rooms side by side, Aurea Cabins, 14039, 14037, 14035 on the Seaside. The passengers in the middle cabin dropped out before final payment- they were the middle cabin. When we called to confirm final payment and note the room was dropping out, we requested to switch to their room (14037- it has an adjoining door with 14039 and we have a toddler who would dearly like to run back and forth between rooms- it's my parent's room so they prefer this). MSC said they would change it at that time, but didn't.

Is there any possibility of asking/begging/bribing the hopefully kind passengers in 14037 to switch rooms once we're on board and MSC allowing that change if they agree?

Here are my thoughts. If you spoke to me before I had started to unpack and if YOU went to guest service and sorted it out before my luggage had arrived and if YOU agreed to sort out any issues arising from the swap then I would consider it. There is NO way I would be waiting at guest services with you so you would have to find me if it was sorted. However I will still have lost some of my trip time waiting on you to sort it so would expect to receive some onboard credit from you the amount being dependent on how long it took for you to get this sorted. BUT this would ONLY be if you asked nicely and did make threats of your toddler spoiling my trip.

Hi Everyone- why would a cruise company build a brand new ship with all the pools with a depth of 6+ft deep?  This way you can only use the edge of the pools to hang on, no playing in the middle of the pool or ability to stand up unless you are very tall?   Any ideas on why the did this?  Never heard of this on any other cruise ships.  Are all MSC ships pools this deep?

(I know there is a kid pool for young kids that is not this deep.)

    Errr because it’s a SWIMMING Pool 🤔🙂

  4. I am on  Fjords cruise in May 2019 and it now list the “Theme” for the Balls on my Voyage Planner.

The two are The Black And White Ball and Masquerade Ball.

I hope they are correct as I am just about to start making my black and white evening gown!!!

  5. The winds were unreal. Our bus pulled over to the side of the road and decided to turn around due to the wind. The bridges were closed to high side vehicles and several road were closed due to fallen trees. After about 5 hours of driving around we were taken to the city hall. On a positive note. The people in Greenock are incredible. They were taking care of us the best they could with coffee and biscuits. People were so friendly. Especially those in the 134 Steakhouse that has been servicing us drinks as we try and muddle through [emoji28][emoji485]. So much for my reservation at Toscano tonight [emoji30]

Thanks for the updates from someone on board.

Yes all the bridges were closed to highside vehicles. Wind gust were reported at 102 miles per hour 😱 Must say we have some wild weather but this is exceptional.

Weather warning now in place till 23:00 hours tonight.

Hope all you and yours are safe. And you can enjoy rthe rest of you trip.

  6. It was pretty bad in Edinburgh earlier. Main streets in centre of town closed. We had a Hugh tree in our work car park come down and just miss the main Edinburgh to London train line. Have friends stuck in Glasgow as all trains are cancelled but as long as everyone is safe.

  7. The nautica has broken its moorings in Greenock due to Storm Ali However everyone is reported safe and those ashore are being looked after by the shore team and sheltering in a church hall till the storm dies down this evening.

    Stay safe everyone

  8. Ignore the previous post!

You drive into the car park first where they check your name off the booking list and provide you with an envelope containing your welcome letter, cruise card and luggage labels (unlimited luggage allowance). Once you have attached the labels to your cases these are taken directly to the ship.

You then park your car where directed and board the free bus to the check in area (details in an earlier post).

On your return to Port of Tyne at the end of the cruise, catch the bus from the ship to the car park where your luggage will be waiting.

It's very well organized as they do it all the time, not just for Marella.

Having park at Port of Tyne a couple of years ago this what I remember doing apart from the bus maybe that depends on how near you are to the terminal.

Anyway all being well I will be parking there on Sunday for a weeks cruise on the Discovery.

I will update when I get back

  9. Hi Jackie :)

I'm joining you in hoping for sunshine, but of course it's good to have a wet weather plan too, and the KODE galleries are a really great option!

Re: good lunch spots in the vicinity; My go-to place for a gallery break is called 'Kaffe Chaos'. It's a little independent cafe tucked in a couple of blocks behind the galleries and Grieghallen; certainly not somewhere you could accidentally stumble across. Think cosy, basic and good value. It has great homemade cakes and a simple menu of wraps/toasted sandwiches. It's possible here to have a coffee, toastie and a piece of cake for around 100kr, which is a bargain by local standards. It's quite a polpular place with students, which maybe gives you a good gauge of what to expect :)

Another solid optioni is the cafe situated in the KODE 2 gallery; decent standard gallery cafe which is obviously very convenient.

If you can't decide what you'd like to eat there's Matbørsen in the city centre. It's in the old Bergen stock exchange, which is a really beautiful old building. You take a table and are presented with a GIGANTIC menu covering several different local restaurants, each of which has a kitchen on-site. So there's definitely something for everyone there.

    Hope this helps :)

Thanks Ships in Bergen they all sound great. 🙂

  10. Hi Ships in Bergen :)

Can’t wait to visit your city again. :)

I am visiting in June this year and unless it is spectacular warm (it was the last time I visited ;)) I plan to go to the Kode art galleries.

I plan to be in town all day and having visited the Fish market etc etc before I wondered if a) You had any other suggestions on what to visit for a repeat visitor and b) any suggestions for a nice lunch round the area of Kode or the centre of town that might be a locals “secret”.

    Thanks Jackie

  11. Which I had thought was Cunard!!

Whooops Sorry misread your answer Port Royal   Yes I agree sadly more and more Carnival, RCL And NCL I would suggest.

Saw folks on my NCL cruise last year that dressed like err well to polite to mention it here.

  12. When they will learn that We are on a vacation and most people don't have the free bag in the major airlines, no space for the penguin dress

Because it’s Classy and even in this day and age people don’t want to look like slobs/tramps even when on Holiday!!

  13. I thought you might be amused by this question I found on a different thread:

    "

Can my husband wear sweat pants in the MDR the first night and every night for that matter on Empress of the Seas? Sailing April 14-18 to Nassau and Key West. "

The answer was in essence "not a problem, dress as you wish"

    OR this

Can women get away with wearing Jean capris with a cute top and cute wedge sandals?

    from this thread - https://boards.cruisecritic.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2616131

Admittedly I find Capri pants one of the worst"fashion" statements but Jean Capri pants!!!!!

  14. I guess they feel if they are paying many thousands to be on a voyage that they NOT be treated like first graders. Turn off the “ dress code” police in the twenty first century.

I have been followin this thread with interest as I have booked my 1st Cunard cruise for next year. I have also been trying to convince my friend to join me. We are both early 50s and ENJOY dressing up.

Why can’t there be a line that has this as a USP? And yes bring on the “dress code police” if required.

BTW I was on NCL last year and there was was a male dressed in Pajamas Yes Pajamas:eek:  In the Main Dining Room one evening. Made me feel I was in some undesirable place.

  15. Hi Ine,

A couple of cruise mates did the Atlantic road And raved about it. Just can’t remember if it was from Molde. I do know some of them went on an out of town excursion and thought it was great I will see if I can work out what it was.

    Jackie
