Terrace suites on the Shadow

The terrace suites used to be priced the same as vista suites (80% verandah suite price up to 2007). Then it was most desirable and you had to be lucky to get one. Its location is right opposite to midship verandahs on deck 5, the most desirable and convenient location regardless of category. Now they are priced about half way between a vista and a verandah, so it is up to the individual to consider whether the terrace is better in value.

Meow, a friendly dispute: You state "deck 5, the most desirable and convenient location regardless of category". After many SS cruises, I would give the honor of most desirable and convenient location to deck 6, midship veranda, for multiple reasons. As far as category, the hands down winner is Silver Suite, deck 7 on Whisper and Shadow. To each, his or her own.

I agree with Wellseasoned that the Silver Suites on deck 7 of the Shadow and Whisper are the best. In our opinion, the "best" Veranda suites are on deck 8. Easy access to the pool, and we like to feel the motion of the ship.

I like deck 5 because that's where the lobby and tour desk are and if we have a quick question we can just stroll over and ask. Also, on the way back to the cabin at night we can grab a port map for the next day.

Plus, the bar is on deck 5! :D

dsarubbi, we like deck 6 because: as duct tape said, two flights up to the pool and Panorama, two down to the restaurant. Also, one up to Terrazza, one down to the reception, casino, bar, boutique. Quiet, can get to those places easily without having to traverse them. Walk toward stern on 6 and the show lounge is right there. There is a convenient laundry just forward of the stairs/elevator lobby at about the 640 level. And, the "secret" balcony is portside off the stairs/elevator area I just mentioned. If you live starboard near there, you can dash over to that balcony in an instant to see things you might be missing on the port side without having to run up on pool deck. For years, we have booked starboard on 6 on Whisper and Shadow to take great advantage of that .

  • 2 months later...

After a few years of mass market cruises, DH and I considering a panama canal cruise in the terrace suites. We really are not heavy balcony users, but like being able to occasionally get in fresh air and stepping out to enjoy the sunset, take a photo, etc. He asked me to ask a few questions before booking, which I really hope will not turn into a policy discussion. The general question is whether or not smoking is allowed on the terrace area. If the answer is yes, can those of you who have sailed in terrace rooms commented on the frequency of this occurrence and whether the frequency/nuisance (for those of us who are allergic to smoke) is any different than sailing in a traditional veranda cabin?

I also noticed earlier on this thread that the outside area is a crew walkway. Is there a lot of noise from people crossing by? Is it open for people to walk around at all hours of the day? Have people run into other guests or crew walking by?

Thanks!

I enjoyed having a veranda suite on deck 8 (Silver Shadow)...good location in my opinion.

I had one of these suites on the Whisper, pros and cons:

Pros:

Access to outside

Great mid ship deck 5 location

No traffic past your door to the "terrace"

Cons:

Its not a balcony, but access to an outside escape route for the lifeboats, no furniture

You have a glass door vs a window or full glass wall as in a veranda cabin

When they were priced as vistas they were a fantastic deal, now I rather have a vista or go to a full balcony

Thank you very much for that photo, it will be helpful for DH as he thinks about what we want to do. I am also reassured that there won't be a lot of foot traffic. I can't remember what ship we were on that had oceanview rooms next to the promenade deck track, but I do remember thinking it would be somewhat like living in a fishbowl with curtains.

I understand that the terrace was a better value when it was priced the equivalent of a vista, but on the 15 day sailing we are looking at, there is a roughly $500 price difference between Vista and Terrace, and then another $700 (from Terrace) to get to Veranda and $1000 to get to midship Veranda.... or approx $33 day to get the Terrace (from Vista) and $80/100 for the Veranda. I guess it's an individual question, but if anyone has any thoughts on the specific value for this sailing, I would appreciate them.

Shop around with different agents for price. I have found that I can save that much per day with the price that I get from shopping.

It amazes me the difference in price for the same cabins when you shop. For our Oct cruise we saved over $1000 from the highest to the lowest bid.

I guess you would have to ask yourself what you would use the veranda for, if you want to sit out and watch the sea and relax, then the veranda is worth it. If you want to just look outside and since its a small ship its easy to get up and out on deck, get the vista. If you want to occasionally poke you head out to see the weather and watch coming into and out of port in a public area (though underused), then the Terrace is fine. I actually didn't care for the terrace cabins, I could see people next door looking into my suite, I always had the sheers closed so the view was gone and I ended up never using it.

Thanks Bill. In terms of price shopping, I will definitely check it out-- I had been looking at SS's deep discounted rates, but I since this will be our 15th cruise or so, I definitely should have considered that pricing (and relative pricing) could vary wildly between TAs.

Avalon, thanks for sharing your experience. I think my biggest concern is that we'll feel like we need to keep the windows closed. Originally I was excited by the novelty of the Terrace concept, but I think we will have to do some serious thinking about the pros & cons.

If its a matter of affordability take the Vista Suite. We have always booked our SS cruises (7) in a Vista. We are not fans of Balconies, when we have had them, we rarely used them, although I must admit when in Port they are nice. But we use the outside of the Terrace Rest. as our Balcony when in Port and it works for us or other areas that afford a nice view. Vista Suites are always very quiet, but if you have a mobility problem it might not be right for you. 1,000 difference to us is quite a few specialty dinners and some tours that we might not be able to afford otherwise. I look at it as an extra Shipboard Credit.:):)
