Flight back from Rome

We are looking at a transatlantic cruise that ends in Rome in mid May. The cruise is the easy part. Is there a trick to finding a flight from Rome to either Philadelphia or Baltimore/Washington area airports? Everything is really expensive and/or goes through JFK. Any suggestions are welcome!

UA flies non-stop to Dulles from Rome, and looks to be the only one flying non-stop.

US Airways is the only one flying nonstop FCO-PHL, and is cheaper than UA going into IAD.

Buying a round trip and abandoning the return trip will save you a bundle on both of these options.

If you are refering to flying this May, fares are getting expensive as the flight date is getting closer. Fares were cheaper 2-3 months ago.

May 2011 or May 2010?

Agree, purchase a roundtrip ticket and just don't use the return. The nonstop on UA (FCO-IAD) does not route through JFK. There are many other one stop flights that don't route through JFK and they are even less expensive than the nonstops (about $750)

If this is for May 2011, who knows yet?

If you want a one way from Rome, the only airlines that offer deep discount one-way tickets across the Atlantic are EI/Aer Lingus (via DUB), or TS/Air Transat (via YYZ/Toronto or YUL/Montreal). Actually any airline will if you fly via DUB, so why not buy FCO-DUB (or even PSA-DUB) on anotehr airline and change to USAir at DUB ?

Thank you for the info on FCO-PHL. That saves us hundreds.

Warning: if you buy two separate tickets and your flight comes in late in Dublin and the US airways flight is gone, the first airline is not responsible to get you to your final destination. If you need to change planes on the same day, make sure you have both stretches in the same ticket or leave more than enough time.

You could buy a return ticket from Rome, and just never fly back to Rome. Officially this is not 100% allowed, but nobody cares. Beware that you have to throw the return flight away, not the first stretch. If you don't show for an earlier leg in the ticket, the airline will cancel the rest. We just did a quick internet search and this construction saves you 65%, at approx EUR 500 per ticket instead of EUR 1450. The computer comes up with several options such as Air Canada, Air France, Swiss.
