CaveDiving Posted June 5, 2010 #651 Share Posted June 5, 2010 I suspect they want to saty in business, Most cruisers these days are not going because of the "Formal" requirement. On the other hand after around 700 nights on HAL, I for one would probably switch to another line if HAL were to eliminate the formal dinners a couple of times a week. I simply look forward to the elegant dining experience. Scott & Karen
mudscraper Posted June 5, 2010 #652 Share Posted June 5, 2010 I have sat in Court with Criminals about to be sentenced to Prison for much of their natural life and I'm sure elegance was not wearing a jacket and tie, maybe a tux would have worked better. Point being, dress code does not make the Man/Woman. Subpoena duces tecum your elegant finery if you wish to enter the MDR. Rich
Gotta Go Cruisin Posted June 5, 2010 #653 Share Posted June 5, 2010 I'm not aware, nor have I ever seen anyone asked to leave the show lounge, the casino, the Explorations Cafe and/or any of the other lounges on a formal evening not dressed to "da code". So what they tell you over the phone is not always what you'll find onboard. I suspected that such a code was difficult to enforce and hoped that was the case, but HAL was clear to me that people would not be allowed into the Show and/or the Formal Night Activities on "Formal" night if they were not dressed Formally. The expectation was to return to your room or go up on deck. All I know is what they told me. I'm glad to hear from you that it is a bit more relaxed. Will advice after next month My cruise is at the end of the month, so I'll have the info from the experience by then. If it is anything like the other lines, it will be more relaxed than has been stated, but who knows I could be wrong. One way or the other the DW and I will enjoy ourselves. I hope HAL tries to assist in the process.

Gotta Go Cruisin Posted June 5, 2010 #661 Share Posted June 5, 2010 Perhaps a motion for summary judgment would be advisable at this point. This wouldn't be appropriate at this point when the facts are still in dispute, but you could motion if you would want to look foolish. It's up to you. mudscraper Posted June 5, 2010 #662 Share Posted June 5, 2010 Actually I usually don`t post on these dress code threads but I notice that most objections to ` dressing up` come from the male of the species. Most women enjoy dressing up (IMO) on formal nights. I`ll bet they would prefer the elegant atmosphere of the MDR rather than obtaining their food from a buffet line. My bride enjoys formal nights and I wouldn`t think of not ` dressing up` for her so we could enjoy our dinner in the MDR. Rich

mudscraper Posted June 5, 2010 #664 Share Posted June 5, 2010 Awhile back I was reading a dress code thread (not HAL) where a young woman on her honeymoon was looking forward to dressing up for formal night but her husband was one of those `no way am I wearing a monkey suit ` types. She was praying that they wouldn`t be turned away from the MDR on formal night but had resigned herself to that possibility. I could sense her unhappiness between the lines. To make his new bride happy he could have bought an inexpensive sport coat and tie. A happy wife is a happy life. Rich

Properly attired you are met with a hearty "Welcome Aboard" the first night. Improperly attired, you are met with a brisk "may I help you". It's as painful for those who witness it as those who are at the pointy end of it. Smooth sailing...

Topsham Posted June 5, 2010 #667 Share Posted June 5, 2010 I read in one of the Austrailian newspapers this past week that a woman was acquited of murdering her husband after 25 years of marriage. The jury felt the woman had good reason to 'do him in'. Probably because he refused to take a jacket on a cruise!!!!
Taxguy77 Posted June 5, 2010 #668 Share Posted June 5, 2010 I'd be willing to bet my next paycheque that you will not be stopped from going into the casino, lounges or shows if you didn't dress formally. The choice is yours however. NO BET! DW & I were in the casino nightly and rarely saw a tux, often not a jacket, on a 16 nite TA.
Taxguy77 Posted June 5, 2010 #669 Share Posted June 5, 2010 Sorry John, I was referenceing the policy and contact with Customer Rellations. The CR people indicated that you won't get into the evening activities unless you are in "Formal Attire", if that is not the case I wonder why they told me that? If the information they provided is incorrect I appoligize. This is our first HAL cruise and I really don't want to be confined to my room after dinner at the Lido as a consequence for my lack of "Formal Wear". If I had read much of the HAL threads before I booked, I would never have set foot on board. Sounded like a lot of people in suites with cases of wine spending a lot of time keeping plain folks stuck in the bowels of the ship. The cuise was nothing like that, the snobs on these boards were not to be found on board. Likewise the sloppy hillbillys and (with one exception) chair hogs. Very enjoyable voyage.:)

iancal Posted June 5, 2010 #674 Share Posted June 5, 2010 Yes, it is. Unless DW asks. But she is neutral-no thanks on the subject of going to MDR on formal night. There are other, more important reasons to us as to why we cruise on HAL and a few other crusie lines. We realize that it is important to others which why we would not support abolishing it. Just give us some other options, which they do, and we are fine. Having said that, if we do decide to go formal we are not in any way offended by others in the MDR who may not be attired in the manner suggested by the cruise line. Don't expect us to hide in our cabin on formal night if we are dressed casually..... because that will not happen nor do the cruise lines want it to happen.
