candigirl41 Posted March 31, 2010 #126 Share Posted March 31, 2010 So TOTALLY Agree with you! Thanks. My parents were English an thought the rules were wrong, but we adhered to them. I drank a beer on friday when I was under age. Candi
halos Posted March 31, 2010 #127 Share Posted March 31, 2010 That being said. This country is completely backwards. Candi LOL...I think it's because this country is very young. The problem lies in thinking and acting as if we are the be-all-end-all/best, when the fact is we really have a lot to learn. I'm hoping we get it right eventually... and sooner, rather than later. :p

nrdsb4 Posted March 31, 2010 #129 Share Posted March 31, 2010 I guess I just choose to raise my kids more independantly. As far as I am concerned when they are 18 they are adults and should be able to make adult decisions and take responsibility for the consequences of those decisions. I want them to be able to go out like I did at 18 and make responsible choices, not rely on Mom & Dad to set rules for them and punish them for not following through. That shouldn't be my job any longer. My job is to get them to 18 with ability to make those decisions with common sense, integrity, and responsibility. After that, I am there to support, guide, and lend a hand - but not to bail out. I've seen too many parents do the bail out route with no consequences and no responsibility for poor choices. End results were nothing learned and poor choices continuing with bail-outs expected and not appreciated. I refuse to go that route with my kids so I am teaching them responsibility now, so they know how to make good choices and take responsibility for their bad ones once they turn 18. This attitude is becoming quite rare, imo. Society seems to be keeping their kids "children" for much much longer than our parents did. In the thread about the young man who got drunk and either jumped or fell into the empty swimming pool on RCI and was critically injured, I lost count of the times people referred to him as a "boy," "kid," etc. As in "of course kids do silly things," or "that poor boy should have been able to count on the net holding his weight," etc. Well, "that boy" was allegedly 23 years old! That is a full fledged adult in every country in the world, yet many among us still think of these young adults as children whose actions should be rationalized because they are "kids." Interesting comment. I'm often guilty of over-using the term "kid" to describe myself and my friends, who are all in our 30s. And I agree, that there is a sort of over-extended adolescense going on. I don't know if it's the parents trying to keep their adult offspring childlike or the adult offspring stubbornly refusing to grow up. And I'm entirely sure if I should be commenting at all, as I just bought myself a Zhu Zhu Pet.

That's probably because the individuals posting are old enough to be this kid's (oops) parents. It's all relative. Our local MLB commentators are constantly referring to the 20-something year old players as "kids".
dan40 Posted March 31, 2010 #132 Share Posted March 31, 2010 I did not read all the posts. That being said. This country is completely backwards. Most countries have a legal drinking age of 18. If you aren't old enough to drink, then your parents should have to be responsible for you until you are 21 and you shouldn't be able to be in the military or vote. It should be all or nothing. If at 18, you can vote, enlist in the military be responsible for youself you should be old enough to drink. If you are 18 and get arrested for drinking you are tried as an adult. If you are not old enough to drink how can you be an adult? Just my 2 cents. My DD is 21 and I let her drink in Mexico at 16. It was one or two beers and she was fine. At 17 they let her drink at dinner with 7 other adults as long as we poured the wine. She had a glass with dinner. In England a child of 14 can have a glass of wine with dinner in a restaurant if accompanied by an adult. Off my soap box. Candi Perhaps its because that multi thousands of incidences have proved without a shadow of a doubt that 'kids' under the age of 21 are extremely unlikely to be capable of handling alcoholic drinks. Yes, they can vote,WHEN SOBER! Yes, they can serve in the military, WHEN SOBER! And yes, they should be tried as adults when driving drunk at 18, 19, 20, 21, or 56. I was still under 21 when I was air evaced out of Vietnam and went through surgery in the Philippines. Every evening I would go, in my sear sucker pj's and robe, and with my crutches, to a club on the base and get rip roaring drunk. NEVER did I associate my military service with drinking laws in the states. 2 different things.

Our local MLB commentators are constantly referring to the 20-something year old players as "kids". It does seem like childhood has been extended of late, I think it is the relationship with the current babyboomer parents and their kids. I am in my 20's and it's easy to see how people still consider 20 somethings to be kids, especially when half of them are still living at home........ LemurCat Posted March 31, 2010 #149 Share Posted March 31, 2010 John Adams and Elizabeth, were probably two of the best mini series I have ever seen. Did you happen to catch either of those? Hey Halos ... to circle back ... I just re-upped my HBO. David Simon's "Treme" starts on the 11th. Lemur loves some David Simon. Homicide: Life on the Streets, The Corner, and The Wire are some of my favorites. Treme looks to be equally excellent.
