What to do about drinking age

I agree that you are entitled to your opinion. But to use your own logic, just because you don't agree that the OP should post her question to get other's opinions, doesn't mean that it is "ultimately pointless". I think that an honest exchange of opinions is never pointless.

1. You're not going to get an honest exchange of opinions on this topic ... it's like discussing politics. No one ever admits they screwed up their kid -- except Farrah Faucet and her kid Redmond.

2. Why in the name of all that is good and pure in this world would anyone *WANT* the unqualified opinions of a bunch of internet yahoos on this particular topic? This is like people who go on talk shows for relationship advice. You're opening yourself up to criticism, hurt, self-doubt, and the bad, bad advice of people who don't know you, don't know your kid, and aren't all together familiar with the circumstances at hand.

I believe the doggeral term for female mammaries is considered to be less than polite in it's usage.

I'm a nurse and usually say chest, however since it was a song title I was just repeating it.;) Definitely not trying to be impolite or offensive.

I think a certain poster is just a little argumentative today and I do NOT mean the cat

I agree, I was a little put off by that comment. I am 38, most of my friends in high school went to the Jersey Shore (very big deal here) for Senior Week where they were drunk for 7 days. My friends and I took Amtrak to Busch Gardens/Williamsburg. I did not drink in high school, except for a glass of champagne at my cousin's wedding. The opportunities were there, I just didn't do it. I was an AP/Honors student and I remember a monday morning in Calculus class, our class president came up to me and asked if I knew how she got home from the "kegger" on Friday night. Not the friends I wanted. I was in high school in the 80s in Philadelphia, and I didn't drink, smoke or do a single solitary illegal drug.

Yes, you did...you are lying...all HS/College kids are bad and absolutely no one is an honors student:D....well, according to these boards anyway.

Good for you to be have been responsible......my kids are as well...as are we.....apparantly we are wrong though:)

You *DO* know it's just a matter of time before a good portion of the parents on this thread start a "parent-off" and try to beat their morals and opinions into the heads of their fellow posters on this topic. Because there is no hard and fast answer, everyone is right, no one is ever wrong, and asking for this sort of advice is the equivalent of spitting in the wind -- messy, loud, and ultimately pointless.

And that's not being rude. That's being matter-of-fact. Might not be what you and the OP *want* to hear, but those are my ideas for exchange.

While I do respect your opinion,,,, YOU are proving your own point of contention.

Your first post on this thread stated your opinion on the subject. Which is different from mine, but that's OK :D

Your second post was a follow-up.

You're now on your 6th or 7th post on this thread "beating your morals and opinions into the heads of their fellow posters on this topic".

You are absolutely correct..prime time TV is horrible...The History, Learning, Discovery Channels etc do a nice job though during prime time...very educational...the Food Network and the Travel Channel as well....the kids love them.

I won't have HBO in my house either...because by 10pm it is basically soft porn.

Some people, not me, call those channels, "The Animal Porn" channels!!:D:D

At 18 I was an adult, independant and no longer living with my parents. If I were to have made a trip to Mexico at that time, I would not have asked my parent's permission on whether or not I could have a drink in Mexico. It is legal for an 18 year old to drink in Mexico - no parental approval needed. I hope I have raised my children with enough common sense and independence to make adult decisions when they are 18 including following the legal rules in regards to drinking and choosing to drink responsibly.

Actually, I'm not beating my morals and opinions into the heads of anyone. If anything, I'm stressing my lack of opinion. Also, this is my 6th or 7th post because people keep responding to me, yourself included. If someone questions my opinion, am I supposed to just sit here and stare at the bloody screen? Or should I try to clarify it so that it's not misunderstood?

Are they allowed outside the house? If so they have pretty much been exposed. Do you listen to the music they listen to? Know all the lyrics?

I guess my point is that we instill our morals, they watch us and know how we act and what we would do, and often them mimic us.

We can give our children a strong foundation and morals to keep that foundation strong, but protecting them from what is everyday life in the "outside world" is not doing them a service, it's still gonna be there and they need to know how to deal with it from an early age.

That is simply my opinion and I truly believe every parent has a right to make their own decisions on their kids.

But what may be offensive to you may just be everyday to you.

I find very little of the human body offensive OR sexual unless it's my husband, simply because I'm a nurse and I see bodies of all shapes and sizes almost dailyl

I've been called more names than I want to but you know what? Again it's the nature of the beast and what you make of it, I now work in psych and it's not the psych patients nature to watch their language, hence the names. It's not offensive, it natural, part of life, and someone needs to help them.

So forgive me if I don't share in the "that's offensive drama" I'm just not easily offended, unless it's abuse, that offends me highly.

Cheers, Carole

actually "The History of Sex in the Ancient World" was quite good.

I purposely left one service provider because they cut out TLC and History...I told them I want it for the kids....no changing my mind.

And no, the kids were not watching the "sex" show as it was on late...but my 19yo came home while it was on and she would have appreciated the show...she is a Sociobiology major.

That's all well and good but when my 18 year old was with me and I was still in charge, and paying for him, it was mom's rules, not the country's, that applied. He's now over 21 and still chooses NOT to drink. :D

Sex in the Civil War Parts 1 & 2 was on History International the other night. Well done production.

I actually love all those channels..regular TV pretty much sucks BUT I am a HUGE fan of HBO. There create some brilliant mini series...and I'm not opposed to anything they show after 10 ;)

Show of hands....who stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

Hola :)

(I'm more a Marriott fan)

I guess I just choose to raise my kids more independantly. As far as I am concerned when they are 18 they are adults and should be able to make adult decisions and take responsibility for the consequences of those decisions. I want them to be able to go out like I did at 18 and make responsible choices, not rely on Mom & Dad to set rules for them and punish them for not following through. That shouldn't be my job any longer. My job is to get them to 18 with ability to make those decisions with common sense, integrity, and responsibility. After that, I am there to support, guide, and lend a hand - but not to bail out. I've seen too many parents do the bail out route with no consequences and no responsibility for poor choices. End results were nothing learned and poor choices continuing with bail-outs expected and not appreciated. I refuse to go that route with my kids so I am teaching them responsibility now, so they know how to make good choices and take responsibility for their bad ones once they turn 18.

I liked TLC before it became the Human Freak Show channel.

I liked Discovery before it became the Biker Bar/These Guys Work Harder Than You channel.

I liked A&E when it actually showed ... you know ... arts and entertainment and not low-rent reality shows.

I like Bravo! for Top Chef (used to like the Housewives, but I'm over it).

I like the Travel Channel for Bourdain.

I like AMC because it freakin' kicks butt.

I'm a bigger fan of the higher-up cable channels -- History International, Military, Investigation Discovery, etc.

And I adore PBS.

I can't say I watch much HBO. I hate Entourage, so it's kinda blocking any like I might have for Pacific. It'll show up on History at some point, I'm sure.

Warm Breezes I am with you! When my daughter moved away for college, she knows how to function on a day to day basis independently. Two of her suite mates don't even know how to do a load of laundry and go home every weekend. We need to realize that we won't always be there and the best gift we can give them is independence.

John Adams and Elizabeth, were probably two of the best mini series I have ever seen. Did you happen to catch either of those?

Little did I know that once my oldest left for college at the age of 18, she'd never be back. After graduating in KY, she went into the Americorps in MT for a year THEN went into the conservation corps in WA for a year...now lives in NC

If you don't have common sense & responsibility drilled into them by the age of 18...you're basically screwed.

Isn't the 'diversity' of thought among people fascinating??

You have some people on this thread that think allowing an 18 year old to drink in a country where it is LEGAL, while in the presence of his parents is a bad thing...and at the other end of the spectrum, another thread about a woman who wants to allow her 10 year old kid to babysit his 3 year old sibling in the cabin while the parents go out and have fun on the ship at night (because they don't want to pay a babysitter)

talk about extremes!

I caught parts of both, actually, and like them well enough. Unfortunately for them, HBO was running them at the same time PBS was doing Dickens miniseries, so I was a bit distracted. I love me some Dickens. Little Dorritt is where it's at.
