tipping a guide and driver

We have a shore excursion in Istanbul with a private guide and driver. What is a fair amount for tipping and do you tip the driver separate from the guide or do you tip the guide and let them work it out?

I would tip the guide, and let them "sort it out", assuming the guide is good and deserves a tip! I'm not sure of the "tipping ettiquite" in Instanbul, tho!

i've heard of cow tipping but never heard of Istanbull tipping.

I would suggest tipping the guide and letting them sort it out. Perhaps google "tipping in Istanbul" for an idea on what is typically expected. There might also be insight in the individual ports threads here.

$5-10 for a whole day tour guide pp and half that for the driver. The guides are paid very little. they get up to 40% of what you pay in the stores they take you to.

I don't particularly like this. I wish they paid them better but they don't....and I don't tip if the driver or the guide sucks. I tipped the driver in Beijing more because he drove like I do(took the bus on the sidewalk to get us where we where going)....

We typically give a tip to each person although you could combine it.

 

I would base your tip on the overall quality of the tour including how pleased you were with both the tour guide and the driver.

We tip according to how long the tour was and how good the guide and driver were. We usually tip each one. If they want to pool their tips -- that's up to them.
