What is your definition of trolling?

What is your definition of trolling? Is someone who seems to be trying to stir up trouble a troll? I think the term is interesting, but I'm not really sure I'm understanding it correctly.

That's a pretty good description of a troll. I rarely see threads on the Hal board that I would attribute to being deliberately started by a Troll, but I see on the other Boards that they are called out pretty quickly.

There is a difference IMHO between asking a legitimate albeit controversial question and trying to be deliberately provocative. And that to me is what a Troll does.

Silly me. I thought it was putting a fishin' pole in the water and dragging it around. I also thought trolls were little Norwegian people who live under bridges!

Seriously I haven't seen them in a long time. Maybe they did run back to the bridges.

Maybe if we are very, very quiet and we let this thread die, the trolls will stay away from the HAL board.

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to visit a board where (for the most part) people are very respectful!:)

Hi TM,

"Trolling" is derived from fishing, where one puts bait in the water and slowly reels it in to see if something will "rise to the bait".

Ira

Yes, that sounds about right. I've noticed that when the post is an obvious send up, i.e. a made up slight, or fabricated problem many, many posters go ahead and try to be helpful. They assume that the horrid incident occurred and try to be sympathetic and helpful. The troll has made them cheap and played them for a fool.

I don't go for that.

Actually this isn't so very common here. I've noticed it on a couple of other forums though.

If a post seems deliberately provocative, I check the number of posts and, if the number is less than ten, I usually check their other posts. It is pretty easy to spot a troll that way.

And I agree, it is not very common on the HAL board, even with all the persistent arguments.

A great definition - and one which fits closely with the Norse folklore creature, the troll, who lurks in dark places, like under bridges, and makes trouble for innocent passersby. It's rare when two completely different concepts mesh so neatly.

I'll try giving a blatant example of a troll.

"I'll be going on the I'llbedam next month. Do you see anything wrong with me sneaking liquor on board, going in my overalls on formal night, letting my 18 month old use swim diapers? After all, it is MY vacation and I'm paying a lot for it."

That should stir up the boards for a week or so!:D

I do think that some folks are a little too quick to throw out the "troll" accusation whenever a newbie comes to the boards and says something negative about that person's favorite cruise line. My DH has his own CC username. He doesn't post much, but shortly after joining (back in 2006) he posted (not on the HAL board) about some issues he perceived in the casino. One of the regulars was quick to call him a troll. DH couldn't have cared less but I've been offended for the last 4 years, LOL!:)

Well that's a troll in So cal......

sorry had to add. With their hair all done up and full makeup...

same here in the Great South ... when I first saw the term, I immediately thought of a man or woman who was out hunting for a pickup in some form or fashion ... either on a cruise or at a bar for instance ... they were 'trolling' for another person.

That having been said, i agree that this board is very constructive and does not seem often to have degenerative threads.

I always had sympathy for those ladies when I saw them at the gym.

And by sympathy I mean telling them they were wayyyyyyy prettier than the 19yrs olds their husbands were fooling around with, getting them ripped to the gills on Cosmopolitans, and doing them in their pool houses. *LOL*
