Alaskan Cruise - what to wear to dinner!?

We are taking our family on our first Alaskan cruise in about a week. I was planning on taking cute dresses for dinner. I have some sleeveless cocktail dresses for formal night and some more "summery" casual dresses for the other nights. From what I am reading, it sounds like people dress much more warmly. Help -- should I bring warmer dressy clothes for dinners?

What you are planning on bringing will be fine. I wore my summer clothes, I just always carried a sweater in case the ac was too much for me.

What you would normally wear is perfect, we went last year in Sept depending on the port, we only had drizzle once, 70's in Juneau...but, every year is different.

The only thing I do differently on an Alaskan cruise is I bring a wrap, last year I bought a nice black one that I could wear with my sleeveless dress and throw around my shoulders-it was perfect.

I did bring lots of hoodies, and bought even more, a rain coat, and even light gloves.

Enjoy-Alaska is one of my favorite places-I hope you got a balcony! It is well worth it!

Bring shawls -- the dining room can be chilly. If you want to walk on deck after dinner, you'll need something to wrap around your shoulders, I predict.

Funny, I always find the Dining Rooms to be some of the warmest spots on the ship. Of course us men tend to have on much more, and heavier clothing (dress loafers, socks, slacks, undershirt, long sleeve dress shirt, tie, jacket, etc), so it is all relative I guess .....

We were on Infinity in July, and I had no problems with sleeveless dresses in the evening INDOORS. It actually seemed more comfortable than the super air conditioner cooled dining rooms on Caribbean cruises. However, DH did DRAG me on deck after dinner -- cold, very cold.

Not for dinner, but the one thing that I wished I had taken was a pair of sweat pants so I could be comfy relaxing out on the balcony.

We've been to Alaska twice at the end of August, once record temps, 85 everyday, we had to buy summer clothes there, the next time highs in the 60s cold at night. You can't tell what the weather is going to be.

Enjoy your cruise!

In Alaska even in the summer you are sailing over water that is about 55F so on deck even if it is warm in port it could be quite chilly when you are sailing. They usually have a good number of wool blankets around the pool (instead of towels) so you can always grab one of those.
