Do you get black soot at the back aft pool on HAL ships?

No. Some years ago, I recall that happening from time to time but haven't seen it in a very long time.

On our aft balcony on the Noordam. I sat out there watching very late for shooting stars and saw smoke coming out of the smokestacks and soot falling onto our balcony. I guess depends on the winds and your direction. It was cleaned by steward. Why at night?

The only time I remember soot was on the Ryndam back in 1995 and that was on the aft pool when the ship was pretty much at full cruise speed. As I recall it didn't last long and it wasn't heavy. I remember looking up when it happened and it seemed like they cranked up one of the engines and it blew a little soot until it came up to full speed. Other than that I can't remember it being an issue on any other ship or cruise. We don't typically go out to the aft pool area at night so not sure if it gets heavier as power demands go up at night.

Maybe we were going at full speed because we had to take a passenger to Curacao as an emergency and were getting there at 2 a.m. instead of 7 a.m.

THere will be soot on the aft balcanies at night becouse that is when the burn the trash. They do not do this during the day as it creates more smoke and the soot. You will see them clean the aft pool each morning very early when this happens.

In general, soot droppings (known in maritime circles as "smuts")

are much less common with today's diesel and gas turbine ships

than in the past with steamships that burned very low grade "Bunker

C" fuel.

 

I haven't observed this to any significant degree since the '80's.
