We might fly into Gatwick and rent a car to spend a few days in the Southampton area pre cruise.

 

Can anybody give me directions how to get from Gatwick to Southampton.

but we did some sightseeing in reverse order and you can also go cross-country and see something...

We went via Brighton to see some from the country but as said in reverse order: from Southampton to near Gatwick.

The company you rent the car from will give you the maps and all the directions you might need..

 

When you collect the car, ask for directions to the M23 northbound, direction London.

In 7 miles, approaching junct 8, take the nearside lane. This will veer left & left onto M25 westbound, direction Heathrow.

In 23 miles, approaching junct 12, take the nearside lane. This will veer left & left onto the M3 south-westbound, direction Basingstoke/Southampton.

In 55 miles, stop where the land finishes & the sea starts.

About 87 miles, time taken depends on day/time/accidents but anywhere between 1 1/4 hrs and 1 1/4 days :D

This is the motorway loop - not the shortest route, but the quickest & easiest.

 

Much more pleasant to use one of many cross-country routes, depending whether you're up to it when you arrive. Also depending whether you've bought a map by then :rolleyes: :D :D

Whilst HB's motorway route is correct, its a long way round. Personally (assuming you are picking up at the airport) I would head south on the M23 round Crawley and then take the A264 to Horsham and toward Billingshurst. Little bit of the A29 then right onto the A272 through Petworth and Midhurst, then turn left at Petersfield down the A3 to the A27 just south of Waterlooville and along the M27 to Southampton. There are many variations to this 'basic' journey depending on how adventurous you are!!

After a longish transatlantic flight, do you really want to drive on the other side of the road right after landing?

 

You can take a train (hourly) straight from LGW to Southampton Central, and there are many deals (check Southern Rail's website). Get to your hotel, and use the 1st day to recover/sleep/get over leglag; and rent a car (in Southampton) for your 2nd day onwards.
