Who's been caught taking spirits onboard?

A poll would be really handy, but DH and I are thinking about being naughty and taking our favourite scotch on board. Not to avoid buying drinks but just to guarantee our favourite scotch is there for a nightcap. (It's hard enough to get in the UK, let alone on a cruise!)

Simple question- who has been caught and what happens?

I know these topics usually end in a discussion about alcohol generally. Please just let me know what happens if alcohol is found.

Thank you all

Becky

Do you put it in your carry on or checked luggage?

TBH the things that really concerns me is being embarrassed if we were caught and if the scotch was disposed of if found.

Have done it both ways but occasionally have seen it removed from carry on. I should add that I use the Rum Runner product to eliminate the problem of breakage.

Don't take a chance. Pack it well protected in your checked luggage and you will have no problem. I don't use the "rumrunners" and have never had a problem with a glass bottle stuffed in between the clothes.

Some people swear by the RumRunner flasks. Personally, I would not use them inside of softsided luggage, but that's just my opinion. I don't eant to start a rumrunner argument here. Been there before, not fun.

No problem on Princess getting anything aboard but my question is why is it hard to get in the UK??? I though everything was available for purchase like elsewhere in the world.

It's Edradour which is the smallest distillery in Scotland. It's not really hard to get, we just have to order it through the internet or go to a specialist whisky shop- which we don't have in our area. I guess I really meant it's not generaly available in bars and restaurants.

Since you are flying you have to put it in your checked luggage anyway. Leave it in there and it will be there when your luggage is delivered to your room.

That reminds me of something I was thinking about. We were planning on taking 2 large rolling duffels and "carrying" them both on. Do large carry-on pieces of luggage get rifled through at embarkation or just scanned? I'm reluctant to check them because they ARE very softsided and I'm afraid they will get crushed by other heavy luggage being piled on top. Is that a legitimate concern?

Your carry-on luggage needs to be the same size as the carry-on requirements at the airport. All carry-on luggage has to be scanned just like when boarding a plane at the security check-point and therefore must be able to fit through the ships' scanner.

Very large bags will be taken from you at the pier and sent to your cabin after boarding.

Carrying your bags off the ship is a whole different ball game. If you can carry them off safely, no matter the size, you are allowed to do so.

a friend of mine was on RCCL and said one of their group had a bottle of scotch taken

out of her checked suitcase. They left a note advising they had taken it as it was not allowed. Check the rules!

RCCL is entirely different than Princess in the way they enforce their alcohol policy. RCCL is notoriously strict in enforcement (and even more so at some ports than others), Princess is very lax in their choice to enforce the policy that they have set.

RCCL enforces the no booze rule, Princess does not

I've taken two 1 litre bottles of Grey Goose along with a jar of martini olives and a bottle of vermouth packed in my checked luggage on at least the last 10 cruises including many Princess cruises but also including RCCL Freedom of the Seas and have never had a problem, or comment, or breakage......

We have soft sided rolling duffels and I have seen them at the bottom of the Princess Pile when they delivered them. I can only imagine how they pile them up in the hold. It is a concern for me which is why I pack glass bottles which are more crush proof than soft plastic. Again, just my opinion!!

ONE of the reasons Princess is my line of choice is because they are liberal with their alcohol policy. I, personally, am a wine drinker and there's never a problem with that. But I have friends that I travel with that like the "harder" stuff. It's never been a problem. We limit it to in-room/balcony consumption and still have a respectable "bar tab".:D I just prefer a cruise line that treats me like a responsible adult instead of a "smuggler"!!!!

Just got off the Emerald on Sunday..they were confiscating spirits bought at the ports of call and they were kept until the last day...wine was ok.

when the alcohol is confiscated is it seen as a big taboo or is it just accepted that people will try to bring alcohol onboard and all acohol is returned?

If people have alcohol confiscated when using rum runners are the rum runners still returned at the end of the cruise?
