Driving from Livorno to Lucca

Is it difficult to drive to and from the port in the direction of Lucca? We're not concerned with the highway driving just getting in and out of the port area to reach the highway. The car will be delivered to our ship and we will return it to the ship.

we just did Lucca and Pisa with a private driver (we had a small group) and the port of Livorno didn't seem too difficult to navigate, but I'm sure it depends on how many ships are in port. We enjoyed both of our stops-if you have a full day you might want to consider a quick stop at Pisa-if you hit it on the early side there aren't many tour groups there yet and it is much easier to enjoy. We loved Lucca too. Seems as if it took around 45 minutes to an hour each way from Livorno.

Its a "piece of cake" although we do find things are a bit easier if one has a GPS. Coming back to Livorno from the North is really nice because you can clearly see the port area as you near the city. Just watch your speed on the major highways (Autostrade) since Italy has discovered they can make money with speed cameras (you get the nasty bill added to your credit card many months after you return home). You also need to always be cognizant of the parking rules (we have more then our share of those expensive parking tickets) and, if you decide to drive into Pisa you must avoid the ZTL zone (another nasty fine added to your credit card). Despite these minor challenges we love driving in Italy. By the way, the good news is that there is plenty of parking at Lucca just outside the walls.

What agency did you rent your car from? We are considering renting a car to drive to Volterro.

Thanks Nancy

Should have finished my other post! Anyway. Couldn't agree more with Hank. We have our own GPS we always take with us which was a great help. The Hertz dealership I referenced below gave us excellent maps for parking in Lucca as well as Pisa. We had no trouble.
