travelteach326 Posted October 2, 2010 #1 Share Posted October 2, 2010 Taking a river cruise next July and will be doing pre and post cruise stays. Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels in either Amsterdam or Lucerne?
Needzavacation Posted October 3, 2010 #2 Share Posted October 3, 2010 In Lucerne, we stayed at the Wilden Mann and really enjoyed it -- very well located, great rooms, terrific breakfast and good service. http://www.wilden-mann.ch/cms/index.php?page=
Rare LHT28 Posted October 3, 2010 #3 Share Posted October 3, 2010 Movenpick in Amsterdam If you dock near there it is a short walk to/from the ship or if you are docking behind Centraal Station you may want to stay closer to the action We found the Movenpick comfortable & a quiet location, an easy tram ride to town (2 stops)
KarlS Posted October 6, 2010 #4 Share Posted October 6, 2010 In Lucerne, we stayed at the Wilden Mann and really enjoyed it -- very well located, great rooms, terrific breakfast and good service. http://www.wilden-mann.ch/cms/index.php?page=310 We agree with Needzavacation's recommendation! At the end of our Uniworld Amsterdam to Basel cruise in 2008 we were met by our Australian friends (who were on their land holiday) whom we'd met on a prior Uniworld cruise. They'd recommended the Wilden Mann because they'd stayed there several times before. We very much enjoyed the hotel for all the same reasons already mentioned. We just wished we'd had been able to stay in Lucerne more than three nights because it was an excellent home base for day trips. We made our own hotel reservations from the Wilden Mann web site, and all was in order when we arrived.
pacmom Posted October 6, 2010 #5 Share Posted October 6, 2010 In Amsterdam, we stayed at the Renaissance. It is a Marriott property and very nice. It is about a 10 minute walk from the Central Station and less than 5 minutes to a tram stop. There are many restaurants across from the tram stop. Really a great location. ddschur Posted October 6, 2010 #6 Share Posted October 6, 2010 Our choice was the Marriott Amsterdam (not to be confused wth the Reanissance). Even though it is a typical US hotel it was CLOSE TO EVERYTHNG WE ENJOY DOING! Very close to Ledesplein, all of the main museums, close to jump on free shuttle bus to Anne Frank Hus and one block from canal tour location. We thoroughly enjoyed the stay there. orchestrapal Posted October 6, 2010 #7 Share Posted October 6, 2010 For the best lake views and wonderful ambiance and food try the Montana in Lucern. We have stayed there several times and it's rooms are probably the largest most modern in town.:)
eandj Posted October 7, 2010 #8 Share Posted October 7, 2010 Just returned and spent two nights at the Renaissance in Amsterdam. Walked to the hotel from the train station easily within 10 min. Modern, business hotel. We got a great senior rate costing us only 144 euro a night. A good value for us. Easy walking distance and/or tram service to all parts of town. Bad side...no free wi fi and tv service had a charge....we didn't need the tv but thought that it was weird. Were originally booked at the Radisson Blu, but looked at the 120+ euro savings at the Renaissance worth it to us. BTW, we saw where the Moevenpick was located and wouldn't stay there as there is nothing nearby and transportation is needed for the most part any time you leave the hotel. That hotel however comes in lower on Priceline. I'd guess for that reason.

It is a short tram ride away from town so worth the price if you can get it on Priceline ;) We bought the tram pass or if fit you can walk to the centraal train station. travelteach326 Posted October 9, 2010 Author #10 Share Posted October 9, 2010 Thank you everyone for all your valuable information! Has anyone done any private tours in either location? We are traveling with a small group and would love to arrange some tours. What about restaurants? I appreciate all your recommendations.
eandj Posted October 9, 2010 #11 Share Posted October 9, 2010 If you go to tripadvisor.com and head to their boards, you can go to the specific cities and get tons of info from residents and frequent visitors. It's a great resource for specific cities around the world.
