Percentage of Tuxedos

As I've reported in previous threads, on our last Volendam cruise - early dining - on both of the formal nights I only saw 2 tuxes, same guys each time. That's not to say there weren't more but not that I could see on the upper level of the dining room. My husband never wears a tux, he prefers a dark suit.

What makes me wonder is the folks who seem to routinely report 30%, 40% or even 50% of men wearing tuxedos on their cruises. Other than on holiday cruises, I have never lately see such percentages.

I'm not taking sides on the formal clothes debate here just trying to be honest, and I wonder if the higher percentages often reported aren't perhaps reflective of wishful think on the part of some, or perhaps hoping thinking that by citing higher formal numbers others will be encouraged to dress formally.

I've had the exact same thought, only from the other point of view! Based on my own limited experience, I've never seen fewer than 50% in tuxes, and that was on 7-day Mexican Riviera cruises. Most voyages I've been on have clearly had tuxes in the majority. So when I see people citing tiny tux percentages, I have to wonder if they are under-reporting (either intentionally or subconsciously) to try and fit their own preconceived notions...

Bless your heart. Nope. Not sure if that's your way of calling someone a liar, but I can honestly say that after cruising numerous times on either HAL or RCI, never ever saw 50% in tuxes, and usually just a few. Including 2 Mexican Riviera cruises.

We will be looking at being away for 32 days next spring, 27 of them aboard ship. For the first time we are debating leaving the tux home in favour of a dark suit. The suit can do double duty for other nights as well---say in the Pinnacle. He also likes to take a blazer as well as a sports jacket for regular dinners and with all the limitations on luggage he just does not have room for a tux----- considering all the other clothing needed for a cruise that will demand items for cooler as well as warmer weather.

The airlines may allow 50 lb bags, but I have to handle the bags and I cannot manage more than 40 lbs without hurting my back. The tux could well be that straw if we decide to take it. We really wish we could take it but it is not looking good at this point.

For our shorter cruise to Alaska next August the tux will be right back in the luggage as we will have much more space available. I may even be able to find room for a beaded long gown.

Not looking to start another discussion but just to enlighten. The dress code for the pinnacle is the dress code of the day. We went on a smart casual dress night and most were dressed that way. Yes there was a few that wore suits, if your asking. All fit in the mood in the Pinnacle and might I add it was a great dining experience.

We always dress for the Pinnacle to make it special. I know we don't have to but we enjoy it

Never saw one on the Noordam this past cruise. That is not say there wasn't some but we never saw any. Everyone was dressed very nicely.

There were some tuxes on that cruise. Actually we had a table for eight (none of the 8 were treveling together) and the four men all had tuxes.

Just returned from the "O" Mexican Riviera. Would guess about 30-35% wore a tux (including my DH) while the majority wore dark suits or jackets and ties. We spent an hour or two in the Ocean Bar watching people go by or get their pictures taken and were quite taken with how great most people looked. There were a couple people walking around in jeans or shorts and such, but they were clearly just passing through.

Dined in the upper main dining room at 8 and, actually, I hardly noticed how people were dressed there - I was too absorbed in the food and how great my DH looked! And, yes, he was rewarded for wearing his tux! ;)

We never even notice in the MDR to be honest. I like to look at folks having their pictures taken and will often see a few men looking smart in tuxes.. so many pretty ladies and handsome gentlemen in their nice duds. And then my hubby looks so fine in his tux, hard to take my eyes off him. :D

Love your pic!:D

Not to get too far off the main topic here but I really want to say something about this. On our very recent Eurodam cruise we actually sat rather near a very healthy looking 40's or so gentleman in the MDR who kept his fedora on throughout the entire meal. It wasn't a ball cap, it was an actual fedora, so maybe that makes it somehow more acceptable and elegant. I didn't think so but my wife scolded me at the time that I didn't know his circumstances (was she thinking chemo, maybe?) and I should not be judgmental. Well, on this particular topic I do get occasionally judgmental. Even in our nicer restaurants around here we are seeing more and more men continuing to wear head gear throughout their meals. I used to think it was a generational thing but I'm noticing more and more that it isn't. It ain't necessarily a youth wearing the hat at dinner; it's oftentimes someone well old enough to know better and to have better manners. Thank you. I'll now be removing my own official curmudgeon cap and await being flamed!

On our recent NA Caribbean cruise, there was a small percentage of tuxes on the first formal night. We ate in the Pinnnacle Grill at 6:30pm the first night and there were several tuxes and long gowns. On the second formal night, I only saw 2 or 3 tuxes and a few long gowns. It seemed like the second formal night was not as formal as the first.

Dark business suit will do me in the Carib on Westerdam.

After 15 cruises my Tuxedo shrunk at the dry cleaners, well that is my story anyway, would not be the food/drink, would it?

My clothes have been known to shrink in the closet so I can certainly empathise, LOL;)

  • 2 weeks later...

We were on both the Nov 19th(Holiday) and Nov 26th Westerdam sailings. There was no difference is the number of men in tuxedos or dark suits. Actual percentage was less than 10%. One formal night I think I was the only one in the casino with a tux on. Was there from 9:30 till 2:00. I understand the extra costs being a factor. On the Nov 19th cruise, first formal night, there were many in the MDR without a jacket. None of this bothered us. If I didn't own a tux I wouldn't rent one. You will not be out of place if you decide to wear one or not.

Rather dissappointed last week on the Eurodam. Not only were there very, very few tuxes, there were more men in just slacks and shirt in the MDR on the first formal night. Very few long dresses and lots of plain pants and dressy tops.

Can not comment on 2nd formal night as we ate in the Tamarind and went back to cabin right after dinner.
