Do you see many people drunk onboard?

Recommended Posts

With all the questions about folks wanting to smuggle liquor and wine onboard, I am starting to wonder, do you see many people drunk onboard? We're cruising for 7 nights and for some reason, I presume that party cruises happen more often on shorter cruises. I guess my presumption is that those folk want to pack all their partying into a shorter time.

I guess it depends on how you define "drunk". We're looking forward in July to our 10th cruise and we've seen a lot of people who were obviously having a very good time and some who were somewhat loud, but I've actually never seen anyone who was staggering "fall-down" drunk. There was one guy at the blackjack table a few years ago who was slurring his words a little, but when he left the table he seemed in control. And there were two guys in their 50s who almost got into a fight at 2 a.m. in the casino on the Constellation in the Baltics, but I honestly can't say that alcohol was a factor. They were just natural jerks, I think. Maybe we've just been lucky..... or maybe I'm the one that's been drunk. I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but all our cruises have been in the 7-14 day range.

Maybe I am either blind or ablivious to what is going on around me, but I have seen very few people really drunk on ships. The worst was Costa several years ago. The least amount of drunks I think was on the Alaskan cruise. Other than Costa I guess Carnival and our trip on the NCL Sky a few years ago could boast of having the most people having too good a time. LOL NMNita

I read about it all the time on these boards, but I never see them onboard. Maybe I'm hanging out in the wrong places. Even on a Carnival cruise, we didn't see any drunks, even on short cruises. Maybe I'm not paying attention. I think if people see a couple of people drunk, or kids being wild, or someone in (dreaded) shorts at night, or grumpy old people, or crying babies, they tend to exaggerate it. Pretty much all I ever see is a bunch of average folk having a good time.

The only really really drunk person we ever saw was an older man crawling down the hallway to his room. He had 12 martinis that night.

His wife was really upset because my kids had to witness this when we were walking back to our room. I thought it was a good lesson for the kids to see what can happen if you drink too much.

I still laugh when I think about it. The wife was saying....."you have to get up and walk" he was saying "nooooo crawlllllll".

Well he showed them how to get home under your own steam. No one was going to carry him back to the room!

...can you imagine how ticked off she was? Must have made for a very bad next day.

You do see some obviously drunk people, and occasionally some drunk kids. On my last cruise there was an extremely drunk couple having a very amusing fight by the pool one afternoon. They were the best entertainment all week! :D

I know this is strange, but the drunkest people I've seen have been sitting at my table in the dining room!!! (Not me or my DH) I think some cruisers have a REALLY good time during the day and haven't had time to sober up before dinner. Can get a bit amusing, or a bit annoying....depending on how much I've had to drink. LOL

I think plenty of people are drunk onboard, but you wouldn't necessarily know it unless you spoke to them. When you walk by their table in the dining room or you see them sitting there in their chair by the pool, you don't necessarily know if they're a bit loud because they're drunk or because that's just their way. My mom is one of the loudest people I know (maybe that's why I'm the opposite), but she's that way all the time -- not just when she has her one glass of wine.

I think you do see more drunks on the shorter cruises. Those cruises are cheaper, and, well, you know where I'm going with that line of reasoning.

I guess if you are going to get drunk a cruise ship is the place to do it because you cannot get in your car and drive.

So far I really havent seen anyone to drunk, I did notice when I was sitting on the balcony watching people board I saw a few people singing loud and staggering. It was interesting to watch.

I'd say the funniest expedition was a party boat coming back to the ship in Belize. Everyone was watching from their balconies. One guy, probably in his 50s, was so blitzed he was going around kissing everyone on the party boat. Friends, Crew, Women, Men, he didn't care. He also didn't seem to care that he was losing his shorts at the time.

Then there was the one guy in Cozumel who had to go to the bathroom and didn't want to wait in line to get back on the ship. Several times he tried to stagger over to the edge, past the yellow or red line and pee off the dock. Luckily, the crew knew better than to let him out of their sights.

I have to agree, either I can't spot a drunk, (not likely, I see myself in the mirror each morning..) or they are pleasant drunks. There is such a thing, you know, some folks become more charming as they drink (until they have way too much). Or maybe, it's me........Now that I think about it, when I notice these charming drunks, I am usually drinking.... Hmmmm.

We saw security remove a young woman from the Schooner Bar one evening. She was having a great time but became a danger to herself and others when whe started climbing on tables and messing with the band equipment. The two security guys each grabbed an arm a held her just a bit off the floor. Her little feet were going like crazy! It was so funny!

On the Monarch 3 night cruise they line up wheel chairs in the Schooner bar about 4 in the afternoon. The bartenders said they were "Taxis" to take the impaired safely back to their cabins! When you had had enough you just hollered "TAXI".
