From TVNZ:

2:00pm: 81 people have been rescued from a ship which was swept out to sea by the tsunami which followed the 8.9 earthquake. Japanese media are reporting the Japanese navy and coastguard managed to find the vessel and airlifted them all to safety.

Oceania Nautica, Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth, Costa Classica, Le Diamant, Azamara Quest, Silver Spirit, Crystal Serenity, Paul Gauguin, Pride of America & Orion were all in the area affected by the tsunami yesterday...all have reported safe & well and are continuing with their cruises, although many of those which were due into Japanese ports have dropped those ports for obvious reasons.

Currently there are two trains known to be missing, one is a bullet train, both in the Mysagi Prefecture that was one of the most badly hit areas.

The photo's and video from the areas worst hit are absolutely soul destroying, the Japanese are known for their ability to keep calm no matter what, but yesterday would have been totally devastating for them. Japan and the other countries on the Pacific rim are used to quakes, but that one was the worst in 300 years for Japan, and it was 8000 times more powerful than the one that hit Christchurch a couple weeks ago.

It will take a very long time for Japan to recover, many areas may never be able to do so, hopefully the world can unite for once and send what they can to the country to help in the recovery & rebuilding process.

Sympathies go to all who lost loved ones and to those who are struggling to get by each day as best they can in the coming weeks & months.

a ship carrying 100 people was swept away by the tsunami

What is your source on this? Premature media reporting? This information may be inacurrate as it seems the ship passengers are safe. IMO, posting something of this nature is inappropriate given the lack of proof and the impact of your message.

Your post is scary " 100 on a ship swept away by the tsunami?"

What about those not on a ship who are lost?

The source was posted in a prior post.

And from that source: "Meanwhile, a ship carrying 100 people was swept away by the tsunami and bullet train carrying hundreds of passengers in the Miyagi region was missing. Their fate is unknown."

If you find it "scary" you might want to take it up with the source that was sited.

I am here in Southern California and we have gone thru some strong quakes, but nothing like what Japan experienced. My prayers go out to everyone there. I thought back in 1992, the Landers quake was powerful at 7.2 ( 50 miles to our N) but can't imagine an 8.6. It sounded like a sonic boom X's 2 lasting 45 seconds. This one had to be horrifying for those people.
