Rare Essiesmom Posted April 18, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 18, 2011 I assume you are flying in. Use your ATM card in the airport. You will get the best rates from ATMs. Make sure your bank knows you are traveling and where. Make sure you card has a four digit pin number. chipmaster Posted April 18, 2011 #3 Share Posted April 18, 2011 For a few euros plan to use the ATM after you arrive. Every airport has many at the luaggage claim, thus if you have a bank ATM card you can get 200-300 dollars worth ( whatevery your daily limit is once you arrive ). If you need a lot, say thousands + to pay for tours you should think about getting them before you leave. Yes you pay exchange fee and not the best rate but time is money and you won't want to be looking for ATMs during your busy port days. Avoid the ship and booths at the airport of you can. Rare Keith1010 Posted April 18, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 18, 2011 I would also get your first set of Euros at the airport after you land in Europe. Keith
Rare Hlitner Posted April 18, 2011 #5 Share Posted April 18, 2011 There are a few tips about traveling outside the US so here goes. It is very important that you notify the issueing bank of your ATM card of your itinerary. You should be aware that there is a daily limit on ATM withdrawals (often it can be 300 Euros). You also should have a 4 digit PIN (there have been some reported problems with 6 digit PINs) and you need to know your PIN in numbers (most European ATMs have no letters on the keyboard). And finally, notify your credit card companies (Visa and/or MC) about your trip and itinerary. Failure to notify banks and credit cards companies can cause security issues since the banks are not expecting the change in your usage patterns. Jaybo12 Posted April 18, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted April 18, 2011 Thanks everyone! I need to get a PIN number....I kept forgetting mine so I just use my card for credit transactions since there are no extra charges. I honestly haven't used an ATM for close to 20 years! I am staying a couple of days in Rome ahead of embarkation so I need to exchange sooner rather than later.

I just want to stress that you want to use an ATM to get cash not a credit card. Keith
