Northerncheapo Posted June 30, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 30, 2011 Hello Everyone, DH and I are booked on voyage 5212 (Nice to Barcelona) sailing next May 17-24 (thurs-thurs). Ship docks at 7am and there is a flight out of Barcelona at 11:55am that I am thinking of booking. For the life of me, I cannot remember the airport in Barcelona from previous visits (efficient? issues?) but I guess if there was a problem I would have recalled. Do you think this time frame is ok for disembarking, cab, traffic, checking in at airport, security? Thoughts? BTW, anyone else coming? Thank you, Anita
Skeezics Posted June 30, 2011 #2 Share Posted June 30, 2011 Anita: Wouldn't do it! What happens if you are late getting into port or a snag with debark, such as customs. Just kind of a rule of thumb not to book a flight before noon.
alexandra cruiser Posted June 30, 2011 #3 Share Posted June 30, 2011 having missed a flight like this in past,,now give myself plenty of time,,even book for next day,,if necessary,,,hate to worry about all the details,,like when they let you off, traffic to airport,2hrs.or more checkin for international flight,,etc...many might say,,plenty of time,,IF all goes well,,not me,,relax, enjoy cruise,,and take later flight...:)
Rare Keith1010 Posted June 30, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 30, 2011 Anita this one comes up on the Barcelona Ports of Call Board often and several people will say book it and many book flights as early as 10:30 AM. I am one who says I wouldn't. You could be late arriving to port, or you could be late being cleared. You will hit rush hour and I would allocate 45 minutes to get to the airport during that time of day and you'll want to check in 2 hours before the flight if not earlier. I would look for a later flight or one then next day. Keith
Stumblefoot Posted June 30, 2011 #5 Share Posted June 30, 2011 Having flown to/from Barcelona, I found the airport to be quite efficient. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to book an 11:55a flight when you disembark 5 hours early, especially considering that the port is less than 13 miles (20 Km) to the airport. Rare Keith1010 Posted June 30, 2011 #6 Share Posted June 30, 2011 Anita, you should have your TA verify with Silversea what 7:00 AM is for Barcelona. Is it arrival time or disembarkation time? Keith
Northerncheapo Posted June 30, 2011 Author #7 Share Posted June 30, 2011 Ah, good question, Keith...I just took the time on the website of arrival at 7am. Getting off the ship would be another time all together. I guess that makes a difference, eh? Thanks to everyone for their responses. Normally, I would take a later flight but that is the only direct flight that Air Canada offers to Toronto. Next day is same time, but not direct. I will take Keiths suggestion and ask TA to look into disembark time and take it from there. Happy sailing everyone... Anita
dusababy Posted July 1, 2011 #8 Share Posted July 1, 2011 Anita -- please post the answer you get. It's been my experience that posted and actual debark can be hours apart. As previously stated, BCN is easy access from the pier but complications at both ends, debark and check in, can be a problem.
alexandra cruiser Posted July 1, 2011 #9 Share Posted July 1, 2011 to figure 1 and half,,hrs..or 830 for disembarkation,,,due to port problems?customs?etc....hope that helps,,,I checked myself by calling,,but can doublecheck to make yourself feel better...good luck, either way...;)
Northerncheapo Posted July 1, 2011 Author #10 Share Posted July 1, 2011 Thank, Alexandra, that is very helpful! I think we're leaning towards 'going for it' and taking advantage of DH SuperElite status with Air Canada (they go to extream measures to get their SE customers on board including having a personal escort meet you at the taxi stand and husseling you thru long lines). I guess it is a gamble regarding disembarking time and traffic...anyone have any horror stories of long disembarking time on SS? Thanks all! Thanks all! Anita Everyone does, but don't even think on it Anita -- why burden your imagination with "what if" -- instead -- just think DEBARK WILL BE FINE. :)
Stumblefoot Posted July 1, 2011 #12 Share Posted July 1, 2011 anyone have any horror stories of long disembarking time on SS?I'm afraid our family has only had good experiences with SS disembarking. It seems our ships always arrive early and the process begins early. But, we take our time, enjoy breakfast, and stay on board for as long as we can. Have a great time! Barcelona is an awesome city. Northerncheapo Posted July 1, 2011 Author #13 Share Posted July 1, 2011 LOL, Dusababy...yes, you are right! Positive energy and vibes only!! Stumbleupon, I am glad you have only had good experiences. We have only sailed with SS once before and everything went flawlessly. I was just asking to see if there were any pitfalls I should avoid. DH and I are very experienced travellers and think we'll be fine making the 11:55am flight. If not, oh well, spend the night in Barcelona...there are worse fates in life. We've been to Barcelona few times before so it wont be tragic to make the flight.

Stumblefoot Posted July 7, 2011 #15 Share Posted July 7, 2011 Sorry, Stumblefoot, I called you Stumbleupon in my last post...not sure where that came from, lol. No worries... I've been called much worse before. :) BTW... I really like your attitude. If anything is delayed for some reason, your ability to roll with the punches will serve you very well. Like you said, there are worse fates in life than spending an extra night in Barcelona. Have a great trip!
Observer Posted July 7, 2011 #16 Share Posted July 7, 2011 Okay, slightly off topic: How long must one allow from docking at Monaco to arrival at Nice airport? Thanks.

Observer Posted July 7, 2011 #18 Share Posted July 7, 2011 Think about taking the helicopter. Beautiful views and great service. A perfect way to end the cruise. I'll consider it -- thanks! I assume one can make the trip in no time. However, what if I go by land? :)
Rare Keith1010 Posted July 7, 2011 #19 Share Posted July 7, 2011 I'll consider it -- thanks! I assume one can make the trip in no time. However, what if I go by land? :) I would allow about 45 minutes to get from the port over to the airport. Traffic can be an issue so if you really want to pad it make it an hour but you could get there as quickly as 30 minutes. Of course build into your time how soon you will be off the ship and also what time you need to check in for your flight. I tend to error on the conservative side on all of this but in the end each person figures out how rushed/stress they want to deal with in terms of the times for a flight.
