Schooner Bar

It's a residue they put on the ropes. Pitch refers to the residue and the tar it's distilled from. On RCI, it's made to smell like gun powder.

I believe it's an old Latin term.

Pitch (resin)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pitch has a viscosity approximately 230 billion times that of water, as demonstrated in this pitch drop experiment.

Pitch is the name for any of a number of viscoelastic, solid polymers. Pitch can be made from petroleum products or plants. Petroleum-derived pitch is also called bitumen. Pitch produced from plants is also known as resin. Products made from plant resin are also known as rosin.

Pitch was traditionally used to help caulk the seams of wooden sailing vessels (see shipbuilding). Pitch was also used to waterproof wooden containers, and is sometimes still used in the making of torches.

Petroleum-derived pitch is black in color, hence the adjectival phrase, "pitch-black".

[edit] Viscoelastic properties

Tar pitch is a viscoelastic polymer. This means that even though it seems to be solid at room temperature and can be shattered with a hard impact, it is actually fluid and will flow over time, but extremely slowly. The pitch drop experiment taking place at University of Queensland is a long-term experiment which measures the flow of a piece of pitch over many years. For the experiment, pitch was put in a glass funnel and allowed to slowly drip out. Since the pitch was allowed to start dripping in 1930, only eight drops have fallen. It was calculated in the 1980s that the pitch in the experiment has a viscosity approximately 230 billion (2.3x1011) times that of water. [1]

[edit] Production

The heating (dry distilling) of wood causes tar and pitch to drip away from the wood and leave behind charcoal. Birchbark is used to make a particularly fine tar. Tar and pitch are often used interchangeably. However, pitch is considered more solid while tar is more liquid. Traditionally, pitch used for waterproofing buckets, barrels and small boats was drawn from pine. It is used to make Cutler's resin.

The schooner bar holds a very special place in my heart. We were married on the Grandeur in the South Pacific lounge which is the lounge right behind the schooner bar. Our wedding guests all hung out in the schooner bar before our wedding. I walked through the Schooner bar to meet my husband at the end of the isle. And then after the wedding and pictures we went back to the Schooner bar to have a few drinks before dinner. I stayed in my gown all night!

Anyways we love the schooner bar so very much that we named our puppy after it.

Everyone: this is Schooner!!!

I love the atmosphere in the Schooner Bar on the Independence. We go there for all the progressive quizzes which I love - and my husband hates but goes there under sufference ! The first time on the Indy, when it was 10 weeks old, we sat in there and the waiter was walking by with a tray of drinks. My son didn't see him and stood up. The only problem was that the tray was just above his head at that point. The tray of drinks went everywhere ! Cocktails, wines, beers - they go a long way when dropped all in one go. I was horrified and was rushing round helping the waiters clean things up. The seats were covered - so don't sit in the first seats near the window by the bar. They may be slightly sticky !!

One of the things I love to do the most is sit for a bit and relax in the Schooner bar. I love the smell, the piano playing, looking out the window, playing trivia games, and most of all, a few drinks. :)

Does anyone else love it as much as me or is there a better spot?

Schooner bar is my favorite place to migrate back to and spend time. I see the shows, play black jack, walk the Promenade, hit the pub for the live singing, go to the evening events, even hit the nightclub, but always migrate back to the Schooner Bar.

Schooner Bar is my husband and my favorite place. We have made it our pre-dinner cocktail place. I love that within a few visits the waiters have our order down cold. We first sailed RCCL on Sovereign in 2004 with our kids. It was during the NBA finals, and the Schooner Bar was where we tended to go to watch the games. They always had a "buffet" set up in there with hot dogs, nachos, etc. I think that experience almost more than any other thing about that trip (except for maybe Coco Cay) is what sold my kids on cruising. That bar and every Schooner Bar on every other ship we have been on since has truly a special place for us for that reason.

It all depends on who is playing. I've had one cruise where we

spent every night there. (Saved a lot of casino money on that

cruise.) Now we go to check out the entertainment

on the first night to see how they are. We're still trying to

repeat the experience of that one cruise but haven't been able to . (FYI it was Anselmo Boles). I'll keep trying though. :)

just off the Radiance and we too love the Schooner bar... as for the smell we too thought gun powder. We ask and found out it is from the restored cannons at the entrance. If you go up to them and inhale YES gunpowder! Norvall is the best waiter in there!!

Love the Schooner bar on the vision stye ships, not as much on the Voyager and Radiance, think it is down to the intimacy of the bar on the smaller ships. I also like the Viking lounge at sailaway with the cocktail of the day...

When we last sailed on the Mariner out of San Pedro CA the schooner bar was smoke free. Does anyone know if the Schooner on the Freedom is also smoke free?

The Schooner Bar on Freedom is smoke free. However, it is close to the disco and the casino so there might be some bleed over from there.

As an aside, the only Schooner I've ever been in that allowed smoking was on Grandeur, and that's part of the reason why that's my least favorite ship. :(

My favorite Schooner bar is Radiance and one of my least favorites was Oasis. No ocean views on Oasis and the Rising Tide fountains make it very noisy. It does have great people watching on the Royal Promenade though. :D

We used to enjoy the Viking Lounge but on Brilliance found it smelt badly of cigarette smoke so we started going to the Schooner Bar and just loved it. The atmosphere, sea views and staff in that bar are amazing.

Hoping the Schooner Bar on Mariner is as good.

I much prefer the location of the Schooner Bars on Vision and Radiance class ships to their location on Voyager and Freedom ships, (haven't quite made up my mind about their location on Oasis and Allure) but Schooner Bar is still one of our favorite gathering spots on all of their ships.:)

The Schooner is our favorite pre dinner spot on the Oasis/Allure. It is located on the mezzanine overlooking the Royal Promenade and it's great to sit and people watch while also enjoying the fountains from the rising tide bar.

We loved the Schooner Bar in the FOS on both of our prior cruises. We had Paul O'Shea on our last cruise as the "piano guy" -- he was awesome. For 2 years now we have been looking for the CD we bought from him and I just found it tonight! Can't wait to show DH!
