Would not book a balcony again until...

they start the no smoking policy in staterooms and balconies. Any time we book a balcony, we are aggravated because the smokers use it as their private ash trays. It seemed like every time we went out to our balcony the people next door would rush out to smoke. Ridiculous! If you want to smoke go up on the upper decks provided for your habit. Meanwhile, I felt very badly for the baby who was with his parents in the balcony (sleeping in a crib) while his parents, rushed out to smoke while constantly hacking. We knew they were smoking in the room as well as you could smell it through the air ducts in the middle of the night. Disgusting for us and for their innocent baby. They are suppose to start the no smoking policy in Dec. 2011. We recently were on the Celebrity Summit and they have the no smoking policy, however there was one couple in a balcony smoking and after several days and the threat of putting them off the ship, they got the message and stopped.

I know smoker's will be outraged, but so be it, I'm sick of smelling your cigarettes!

By the way, we were on the Miracle!

I agree that banning smoking on balconies would be a great thing. My last cruise was on Celebrity where they have this policy and I never smelled smoke while enjoying my balcony.

However, Carnival allows smoking on the balcony so you can take issue with Carnival and not the smokers. The smokers are following the rules and are doing nothing wrong.

My suggestion would be that if you want a smoke-free balcony experience, pick a like where it is restricted. If you choose to sail in a balcony on a line that allows it, it is your problem and not the problem of the rule following smokers.

The way I understand it (at least for Carnival), the smoking policy will apply to the rooms only. This does not cover the balcony rooms. I think this will actually get smokers out on their balcony even more because they will not be able to smoke in their rooms.

There's always the Spa Balcony cabins. You are not permitted to smoke in the room or on the balcony of Spa cabins. That may be a alternative for you.

Bottom line - people are going to smoke on their balconies no matter what the rules say. Sad, but true.

Bottom line- smoking on the balconies IS PERMITTED BY THE RULES.

As of January 15th, balcony smoking will no longer be permitted on Princess ships. Violations will be met with a $250 fine per incidence. If it matters so much to you, book with them.

Sorry you feel that way. As others have posted, smokers are (and will be Dec.1) simply following the rules. I'm not picking a fight (honest!), but rather than expecting the smokers go up on deck, why don't the non-smokers? Is one group more "entitled" to their balconies than the other?

You always have the option of booking a spa balcony or sailing another line. Can't offer many suggestions beyond that if you're looking for a cruise vacation.

Again, sorry you feel that way.

If you want to avoid the smokers on their balcony, you need to book a balcony cabin as far forward as possible. As the smoke will go aft when the ship is moving you need to be in front of them not behind them. Smokers YOU need to book a balcony as far aft as possible so you don't upset anyone. OK? You got it? Non-smokers forward, smokers aft.

First let me say, I'm not a smoker, but seriously people whined so much to Carnival about their smoke filled cabins that they changed their policy to strictly balcony smoking....and still people aren't happy?! You can't have it both ways. Carnival is a company that needs to appeal to the masses in order to generate profits. Wether we like it or not part of this includes smokers who paid good money for their balcony. Besides they were following the rules.

if they are following policy, then you have no right to complain. smokers and non smokers equally have a right to enjoy their balcony. as others have said you can book spa rooms or cruise a line with a stricter smoking policy. i know when i consider a vacation, the fact that my hubby and i enjoy cigars, we tend to book places that provide smoking areas.

I found that there are a lot less issues with inside cabins. I only get a balcony on a good upsell because if you are between smokers you only get to use it when they aren't there puffing away. As a former smoker I never could understand the big deal about a little smoke BUT 25 years later the smell nauseates me. I don't pay much attention to second hand smoke issues, unless a person works in a casino or a bar. I personally think the air in a city is more hazaradous and second hand smoke is over played.

I dont understand how so many people can say that they can smell cigarette smoke on the balcony's. I am the 1st one who can smell it a mile away. Now if I am standing next to a smoker on the balcony then sure, I can smell it but when I am on my own balcony, I dont. I have asthma and I am very sensitive to the smell of cigarettes. My daughter smokes and will be smoking on the balcony I paid for for that convenience so she doesn't have to get dressed, run up stairs to smoke. Do I like her smoking? No. Do I wish she would quit? Yes. But she is an adult and as long as she does not smoke around me...she doesn't....then she can kill her lungs and there is nothing I can do about it. When the policy is changed to forbid smokers to smoke on the balcony then she will have to either not cruise with me or go up top where smoking is allowed. This will be her 1st cruise anyways, and depending on how well she likes or dislikes it may be her last.

On the balcony's I would think the speed of the ship coupled with the wind would blow it out and away from the ship. Would this not be true?

DH really enjoys a cigar in the evenings. When I told him he would not be able to do so on a Princess balcony after 1/15/12, he was disappointed (we didn't choose the cruise, our family members did). Our compromise: I booked us a window suite near the cigar bar. I get a bathtub, he gets a nice place to smoke near our cabin.

now this would be very hard to do but one way they could make everyone happy the smokers and the non. Would be to make one side of the balcony non smoking and the the other smoking. But that would be a logistical nightmare so I don't see that happening any time soon.

atleast you found a way to compromise that worked for the benefit of everyone. :) seems alot, not all, of the non smokers don't want to compromise.

I agree with you. I am a smoker, and I DO book my balcony as far back as I can, for that reason. My next cruise, I am stuck up front, so I will ask my neighbors if the smoke bothers them.

I also brought some spray to help get rid of the odor.

Some smokers are considerate. I do not smoke but my fiance does. For our last cruise, we went to Walmart and purchased a Butt-Can. He smoked only on the balcony and used the BC to contain the ashes. I was out there with him a mere foot away and can tell you that it is windy so the chance of being bothered by smoke is nill. He also brought small zippy bags to empty the ashes so the Cabin Steward didn't have to mess with this. The cabin did not in any way, shape or form, smell of smoke. He also followed all of the rules by only smoking in the designated areas. Not all smokers are uneducated, inconsiderate clods. :)

Would also like to add that if a balcony neighbor came to us and said the smoke was bothering them then we would do the right thing and respect that. On another note, during our last cruise we had a loud, voictrous balcony neighbor that was out there till the wee-hours of the morning with no regard for anyone but themselves. I would be willing to bet that some would gladly trade with a considerate smoker over this.

*shakes head* ...I will never understand that.

I am a non smoker and NEVER had any odor whatsoever in any cabin on any cruise.

The balcony is sometimes an issue.

If this was implemented because people (non smokers) complained, they totally screwed themselves (and me)...

To be honest, I don't think a cruise line makes any changes unless they are about money. I think it has more to do with the cost of keeping the rooms smelling so fresh after a smoker has been in there.....because whatever they did use to clean up the smell worked pretty freaking great.

Maybe it didn't come cheap and/or took too much time (which is money)?? I don't know. All I know is that I never had a complaint before.....

i guess you will save yourself some money. i foresee balconies to go premium.

i can sit on the same balcony as my wife and not smell a thing.

your stand is you loss, and will affect nobody but yourself.

No, I would say if you are a non-smoker, book a cruise on a line that doesn't allow it. To tell the smokers that they should book the aft is not reasonable since they are already following the rules the cruise line established.

I'm a non-smoker, but feel that smokers are following the rules and if that's not good enough, it is up to the cruiseline to decide whether or not to change the rules. Obviously, they have decided not to and I'm not going to tell smokers where they have to book.

agreed. i've yet smelled the cigarette smell in any cabin i have occupied. the non smoker campaign has shot them squarely in the foot, even allowing cigars on balconies now.

Technically, I'm an ex-smoker. ;) I wish I could join my DH in a cigar, but I know my addictive nature too well. After 5 years clean, I'd hate to end up back smoking cigarettes.

But I have been known to sit downwind of him and breathe deep. :p

Part of the reason I book a Balcony is for "My Habit". I would suspect you would be mad if you were on one of the upper decks and smelled it too? I tend to think someone’s private balcony is the least intrusive place for a smoker to be. Honestly, how much can you smell it when the ship is moving anyway? Also, I doubt the neighbor had some secret vendetta against you and ran out to smoke every time they heard you. I’m a considerate person, and do my best not to offend anyone with "My Habit". I do not smoke in the stateroom, as I don’t want to stink it up for the next person, but geez, you sure can’t make some people happy!

I’m following Carnivals rules and I shall continue to smoke on my Balcony. :)
