Would not book a balcony again until...

I can't stand it when people who are more than 5 pounds overweight take more than 1 entree in the buffet line. And I can't stand it when "those drinkers" have too much alcohol to drink and lose their hearing so much that they think EVERONE wants to hear their loud obnoxious jokes. Also, the people who wear too much purfume and cologne.

Then we have the chair hogs. I'm not talking about people who "save" their seats but people who actually want to hang out in their chair more than 30 minutes. Really, share the chairs.

What about the people who win in the casino and scream all happily so all of us losers know they won. Oh, and the people in the shows who whistle to show appreciation. A simple clap will do.

I could go on and on about all the things that irritate me but I won't. Well maybe we could talk about the happy birthday singing in land based restraunts. That really gets me crazy.

I just left small town groc. store, and instead of walking another 6 feet! This young punk parked crosswise in a handicap space! Just P.O.ed me to no end!!!

What does any of this have to do with paying extra to enjoy a balcony room and not being able to do so? Those other things don't affect my ability to breathe at least...

We had a Spa balcony recently, however it made little difference as there were smokers on the balconies one or two decks below and we could smell it. Its luck of the draw really.

Same thing happened to me. Now I am relegated to only the inside spa cabins for my November cruise. This will be our last cruise with Carnival.

As it has already been mentioned, there will now be even more smokers on the balconies after December.

The rate of smokers in the U.S. has leveled off for over a decade at about 23%, leaving the percentage of non-smokers at 77%.

Why do the non-smokers have far fewer options for non-smoking cabins on Carnival's ships? And to add insult to it, the spa cabins are at a premium price compared to the standard balconied cabins.

I thought I would never respond to this type of post. But, enough is enough. When they say I can't smoke on my balconey I wont. But until then if you dont like it then go to a different cat room. I dont smoke any place else and not about to get up and go to an upper deck to have a smoke when I can step out on the balcony that I paid for. I am sorry if you dont like it but, hey go to the SPA rooms. :p

I wouldn't bank on that. Talk is cheap and money isn't. I don't see people that have always budgeted for inside cabins suddenly spending money on balcony cabins....

Oh. I see .. so your enjoying your balcony is more important because you are a smoker? I paid for my balcony too, but you are saying that I need to pay for a PREMIUM balcony to enjoy my balcony?

You are right - I don't like it. Against my better judgement we booked another balcony for our next cruise, but if I have the same experience, you can bet your bippy that I won't get one again. As you say, why should I have to go to an upper deck to watch the ocean and breathe the ocean air when I can step out on my balcony? Oh..wait..I guess I can't. whatever......

Thank you :)

Over the years the number of places to smoke has dwindled. I may grumble , but I am always respectful and considerate and only smoke in a designated smoking area . It may be out in an uncovered alley in the rain. But thats the way it is .

I will never make apologies or concessions for smoking in a smoking allowed area.

Well, cigarettes sell for $50-$60 a carton. Prices vary according to state taxes, of course. At one pack per day, that's $150+ a month. For a year, that works out to $1,800+. Double that if it is a couple. For a habit that is more difficult to break than heroin (clinical fact) I can see smokers resorting to balconies when their inside cabins are no longer their option. Perhaps they will take one less cruise a year, or even shorter, less expensive cruises, but they will move to balconies. Just IMHO, of course.

I haven't actually seen any people on the Carnival boards, who are smokers, admitting to switching from inside to balcony. I don't read all these threads so I can be wrong. I would like to hear their comments. Maybe a week cruise, or less would not make such a financial impact on anyone's vacation budget but longer cruises would. I know that there was a lot of resistance on the Holland America boards because many of those people take longer cruises. It would be an interesting topic.

Nah if they forked out the money for a balcony they would have less to spend on their habit. If they had the money they would already be staying in balcony cabins IMHO.

That is a very mature response you posted. Talk of spying? Get a life? Really? That's what you come up with? I know cigarette production is a mainstay down in good old Reston Virginia but show some kind of class, and realize I said I would not book another balcony as I have every right to be able to enjoy my balcony and not have to smell smoke when I have paid good money for my trip TOO. I will make the choice, not you. I have to say after reading all the 4 pages of postings, not one person commented on the fact that these two passengers had a BABY in the room breathing in second hand smoke!!! I don't think it is good for their child (however, strictly their decision) and I don't want it for me and my husband. If you smokers are offended, too bad. So Blah, blah, blah to you. And all you Carnival lovers who think not going back on this line would be my loss, I will take that loss and enjoy Celebrity, Princess and RCCL and HAL. You can have Carnival all to yourselves. Enjoy!

All I can say at this point is.... Wow!

Same here  and I have been thinking of some sort of response, but these debates will always be just that with each side acting so self-righteous and there will never be any satisfaction until one side gets their way. My belief is that Carnival decides where you ARE allowed and NOT allowed to smoke. If you are smoking where you are "allowed" you should be able to do so, guilt free. Smokers will not be smoking in areas that are not allowed, however, if they are then you can complain and get them to stop. And as far as the comment about smokers not being able to afford balconies and/or longer cruises I find that comment absolutely ridiculous.

(I expect to get flamed, seems thats what happens on these boards lately if you are not in agreement with the masses)

No flames here .

I couldn't agree with you more

they start the no smoking policy in staterooms and balconies. Any time we book a balcony, we are aggravated because the smokers use it as their private ash trays. It seemed like every time we went out to our balcony the people next door would rush out to smoke. Ridiculous! If you want to smoke go up on the upper decks provided for your habit. Meanwhile, I felt very badly for the baby who was with his parents in the balcony (sleeping in a crib) while his parents, rushed out to smoke while constantly hacking. We knew they were smoking in the room as well as you could smell it through the air ducts in the middle of the night. Disgusting for us and for their innocent baby. They are suppose to start the no smoking policy in Dec. 2011. We recently were on the Celebrity Summit and they have the no smoking policy, however there was one couple in a balcony smoking and after several days and the threat of putting them off the ship, they got the message and stopped.

I know smoker's will be outraged, but so be it, I'm sick of smelling your cigarettes!

By the way, we were on the Miracle!

People will still be able to smoke on their balconies.

Not voting one way or the other, just REALLY sick of all these smoking posts on CC. However, as a good friend said to someone who was "healthy" all their life while he commented on the lunch someone else was eating "you will be the healthiest person if the cemetary!"

I grew up with parents that smoked and I hated it. I don't smoke and can't stand the smell.

If there is a smoker on the balcony next to me, I figure it takes about 10 minutes or so to finish the cigarette and then it's fine. If I'm not in the mood to stay and wait it out, I'll go inside.

Bottom line is the smoker has just as much right to be there smoking as I do not smoking, at least until the rules change.

If it bothers me that much, I will go do something else.

Thank goodness I have never had an experience like the OP, but I may not have noticed either. I'm on vacation, not trying to win a war.

*LOL* reminds me of my uncle . He passed away earlier this summer. He ate anything and everything . Wouldn't know low cal, low sodium, sugar free from a hole in the ground . I have no recollefction of him without a can of beer in one hand and a cigar in the other.

Then one day he is sitting in his recliner having a big cold cut sandwich, a couple beers , and his trusty cigar watching the ball game like he did a million times before .

He fell asleep watching the game , his daughter goes to wake him up and he is gone . Just like that , here one second and gone the next . Struck down so suddenly .....at the age of 92!!!!!! True story
