in an ideal situation this would be a good idea, but how many ships have you been on that smokers and non smokers are split evenly? what happens when the smoking balconies fill up first? or vice versa. will they turn away other smokers because there are no balcony rooms left on the smoking side. the ships almost always sail full.

If you want to avoid the smokers on their balcony, you need to book a balcony cabin as far forward as possible. As the smoke will go aft when the ship is moving you need to be in front of them not behind them. Smokers YOU need to book a balcony as far aft as possible so you don't upset anyone. OK? You got it? Non-smokers forward, smokers aft.

Hubby and I sailed on the Dream last year and we had a balcony room. Every time I went out on to the balcony, my neighbor was out there smoking and the smoke took my breath away every time. I had to turn around and go back inside. After the first dozen times, I just stopped going out there.

 

You can get angry with me if you want, but I am not making it up!

 

Apparently its my problem to deal with.

 

So, pin a rose on your nose for following the rules, but you know what, I would like to enjoy my balcony cabin too. :o

 

It is not my fault that the smoke bothers me.

If it wasn't, the FDA would have banned it years maybe decades ago, but they haven't.

Therefore one must logically deduce that Govern-mental wisdom is on the public's side

and we should continue to support The American Drug.

I guess they'll ban it just about the same time they legalize cannabis

and hand the legal cannabis industry over to the tobacco industry infrastructure

thus simply switching leaf-products

which will go thru the same growing, reaping, drying, rolling and packaging processes.

That way no-one loses jobs or incomes -waaaay too logical, come on..

they start the no smoking policy in staterooms and balconies. Any time we book a balcony, we are aggravated because the smokers use it as their private ash trays. It seemed like every time we went out to our balcony the people next door would rush out to smoke. Ridiculous! If you want to smoke go up on the upper decks provided for your habit. Meanwhile, I felt very badly for the baby who was with his parents in the balcony (sleeping in a crib) while his parents, rushed out to smoke while constantly hacking. We knew they were smoking in the room as well as you could smell it through the air ducts in the middle of the night. Disgusting for us and for their innocent baby. They are suppose to start the no smoking policy in Dec. 2011. We recently were on the Celebrity Summit and they have the no smoking policy, however there was one couple in a balcony smoking and after several days and the threat of putting them off the ship, they got the message and stopped.

I know smoker's will be outraged, but so be it, I'm sick of smelling your cigarettes!

By the way, we were on the Miracle!

 

Boy, those smokers were sure in a hurry, rushing everywhere and monitoring your every move so they knew when to "rush" out to smoke. You cannot, btw, know they were smoking in their cabin as the smoke from the vents could have been coming from anywhere, they are all interconnected after all. And, I wonder how they had the time and energy to be doing all that spying on you and rushing if they were hacking "constantly."

 

While I get your point, you are far more likely to be taken seriously if you quit using so many dramatic adjectives. When I read posts like this, all I really hear is "blah blah blah" by someone who has no life.

Doesn't everyone have the right to breathe clean air. Having to smell the smoke of a smoker out on the balcony is not only unpleasent...but it is unhealthly. Second hand smoke causes cancer among other things. Why should someone elses bad habit cause me to be uncomfortable. :(

They need to limit their smoking cabins to one side of the ship or the other. That way, you can designate where you want to be. Every other form of lodging has Smoking/Non-smoking rooms, why shouldn't the cruise lines?

 

 

They do this already. They call them Spa cabins for non smokers.

I'll chime in with the "I can totally smell it" crowd. If I'm in traffic, I can smell if the person in the car ahead of me is smoking because it gets pulled into the climate control system. I grew up with smokers so it's not like I haven't spent years and years exposed to the smell on a daily basis. If any non-smoker should have burned out that part of their olfactory system, it's me.

 

As far as the habit itself, I think it's horrible, disgusting, and destructive. My mother died (very slowly) after suffering respiratory failure because she resumed smoking immediately after having been hospitalized for a month with pneumonia. Both the pneumonia and extended hospital stay were also a direct result of her smoking habit. 57 years old. Everything in her house went straight to the dump because it was covered in a sticky film from the smoke. Dad's 62 and has emphysema. He's probably only still alive because he countered his heavy smoking with an active lifestyle but he wakes up with that horrible, hacking cough of a longtime smoker. He said he recently got winded walking to the end of his driveway. 62. And his father was a smoker who died of throat cancer. That's a nasty way to die.

 

Having said all that, it's not currently against the rules to smoke on Carnival's regular balconies and anyone who does a bit of research before booking should know this. I decided it would be better to run the slight risk of being surrounded by balcony smokers 24/7 than have the guaranteed disappointment of not having a balcony. As has been explained already, the "Spa" cabins are all non-smoking, including balconies. If it's the kind of thing that will ruin your trip, book the most forward Spa Balcony you can afford and hope you don't get a tailwind that blows the smoke up onto your balcony.

 

If you decide not to book a cruise at all specifically because of smokers, tell Carnival. Money is the key. If they start losing a significant number of cruisers because of second hand smoke, they'll make more restrictions but they won't know if you don't tell them.

I can't stand it when people who are more than 5 pounds overweight take more than 1 entree in the buffet line. And I can't stand it when "those drinkers" have too much alcohol to drink and lose their hearing so much that they think EVERONE wants to hear their loud obnoxious jokes. Also, the people who wear too much purfume and cologne.

 

Then we have the chair hogs. I'm not talking about people who "save" their seats but people who actually want to hang out in their chair more than 30 minutes. Really, share the chairs.

 

What about the people who win in the casino and scream all happily so all of us losers know they won. Oh, and the people in the shows who whistle to show appreciation. A simple clap will do.

 

I could go on and on about all the things that irritate me but I won't. Well maybe we could talk about the happy birthday singing in land based restraunts. That really gets me crazy. :eek:

I agree. It is a health product. They sell it at Rite Aid, Walgreens, and every other drug store. What's more American than a cigarette and a beer (which they also sell at the drug store)?

Yea mon!! Free up the weed. Less harmful than all the other drugs. Including alcohol, which is the favorite drug of cruisers and politicians everywhere. Alcohol does more damage to society and families than all the other drugs combined.

i would be more concerned with the carbon monoxide pulled into my control system from all the exhaust pipes in front of me. too bad they don't give it a tobacco smell as well.
