BIG MAN advice?

I am 6'0" and 350 lbs. 4 cruises, never a problem. Even went parasailing in Labadie. But please watch the excursions that have weight limits. My wife did the Zip Line in Labadie also, but the agent did put her on the scale to check. She had a great time going down that line.

My husband is 6'4" and wide (although quite healthy and active). I am concerned about his comfort. (I want him to have a good time so we can go again). It's our 1st time cruising and I'm worried about him being cramped. Any big man advice?

This is such a great thread, I've been trying to think of a way to ask this. I'm concerned about mine as well.

I'm so grateful that you posted this. My husband is about your size maybe bigger and I'm REALLY concerned that he'll be falling out of the bed or we're going to drive each other crazy when we're in the cabin. It's sure going to be interesting.

DH is a bit taller. The only times he's had problems over the decades we've been cruising is when we've had cabins with bathtubs, rather than shower stalls. The bathrooms are a small step up from the cabin floor. Then the tubs are also elevated. On some ships he's had to stoop to avoid hitting the ceiling. On some ships he can't stand up in the tub. Period. He really has to stoop to get his head under the shower head. We really try to avoid cabins with tubs. ;) We've found HAL's inside cabins fit his needs the best so far. We've tried the nice big suites, but hate the tub setup. He's not wide so I can't address that aspect of your question.

Many ships these days have the removable, hand-held shower heads that you move around wherever you want them.

Even when you leave them mounted, there is usually a vertical slide where you can raise or lower the shower head to position it as high or low as you want it.

So check out the forums for the various cruise lines you are considering and you should be able to get some good information about the bathroom arrangement for the ship and cabin category you want from the people there. Some of them even post photos of the showers.

my husband is not big but we have a rule that we get ready one at a time unless we are in a larger cabin. so much less bumping in to each other.....can be a problem when the sea is rough and the ship is rockin and rollin...

This could be quite fun. I imagine us falling into bed together and missing dinner.

I've got a big hubby as well - 6'5", 300 or so. He thinks I'm short and petite at 5'6", 260... and those are two words that have NEVER been said to me before I met him. ;)

On a lot of ships, he does have to duck where there are signs and things projecting down from the ceiling. Also, when entering and leaving the ship, as the hatchways can be low.

We also do the single shower thing - typically, we go soak in the hot tub for a bit, and he heads down for his shower first. I stick around the pool deck for a while, then head down to shower and clean up the dive gear, and meet him wherever (usually the casino or happy hour).

My best tip for us larger folks in cruise ship bathrooms is to take the toilet roll and any other vulnerable paper products out of the bathroom, and let 'er rip with the curtain open.

On older ships, there are typically fabric shower curtains, and they tend to cling to you (and they don't call or send flowers afterwards, either ;)) In that case, don't fight it, just soap up and spin. :D

When the ship has a lot of motion, I warm up the back wall with the shower spray, then plant my feet solidly, and splat my back against the wall. It works quite well until it's time to rinse that side, and the curtain attacks again.

Then, when I'm done with my shower, I just clean up the splashes and/or puddles.

The only line I have been on that had just a plain showerhead was Princess (Grand Princess).

I find that the beds are a little bit shorter than ours, so I'm careful to try not to bump his feet when I'm staggering around the cabin in the dark.

Of course, when we're both in there, I do try to bump into him as much as possible (heh heh) ;)

Don't worry about your big man - have a great laugh over your teeny-tiny cabin and miniscule bathroom, and spend lots of time bumping into him in the cabin. ;)

Have a wonderful trip!

Wendy

Oh, I'm not concerned about the tight squish between he and I, I just don't want him to feel like he's using an airplane bathroom. Too late now I guess-we're booked and paid

We met someone on our last cruise who was 6'8" (Hello, The Great Dane, if you're out there) and while not heavy at all, was well built. It was a two-week cruise and he seemed to get along fine.

He did have to do a lot of ducking in corridors and doors though!

Best screen name/moniker ever, once you met him!

One thing that has not been mentioned yet is that the Showers in the Gym are usually much larger than in the Cabins.

While I am not close to your better half's size, I find the Showers in the Gym/Spa Area are much more comfortable for even those of us in the 200# range.

Get a cabin close to the Gym,

I'm 6'5 and well north of 300, and the only thing I try to do is grab a chair in the dining room without armrests. The ones with armrests are tight but doable, but I prefer none. I don't have any bathroom issues, although I much preferred the clam shell shower doors on RCI than the intimate curtain on Carnival and Princess. I do find the beds a bit short, but they are wider than standard Queen (not quite king though), and I find them pretty comfortable.

Great information everybody.

What about life vests? Do they fit you guys?

Shouldn't be a problem. I'm probably bigger than your husband and have always been able to get the lifejacket on.

Also, on many lines you don't have to wear your vest for the lifeboat drill anymore.

;)
