Merchant Ship Avoids Submarine

Winters in NZ

The National Post December 27, 2011.

A keen-eyed merchant ship captain may have been all that averted a catastrophic collision between a U.S. Navy nuclear sub and an Alaskan freighter off the coast of Vancouver Island, according to the Navy Times, an independent publication focusing on navy news.

The incident occurred Oct. 12 in the Juan de Fuca Strait, a body of water separating Vancouver Island from Washington State.

Commander Joseph Nosse of ballistic missile submarine the USS Kentucky ordered a change of course without checking the periscope to see if the way was clear.

It was not until the sub - invisible on the surface except for its periscope - was contacted by another vessel that the crew noticed the Alaskan freighter MV Midnight Sun, was blocking their way.

Cmdr. Nosse was relieved of his command a week later, said the Navy Times, which obtained information through a Freedom of Information Act request.

And this is related to HAL how? ;)

Peter when going to Victoria all cruise ships, including HAL, use the Juan de Fuca Straight.

Knowing the possibility of similar happening while on a HAL cruise which includes Victoria may help us all to be more on the alert for more than whales, dolphins and other sea life:)

No need to worry. I believe this happened in October.

My understanding is the US Navy 'fired' the Captain of the submarine. Apparently he had other moving violations on his record.

First time I heard of a Navy Captain being fired.

FYI, the Navy has been on a roll for the past several years firing Captains, including a Captain of an aircraft carrier. That guy got busted for making "inappropriate" videos and showing them to the crew on the ships closed circuit TV system. The other services take similar actions. Most of the actions don't make the regular news, but the Navy, Army and Air Force Times weekly newspapers usually have articles on the incidents. ;)
