Sorry it took me so long to reply, I was off work yesterday. Ok, His name is Geo the company is Geo's taxi/tour service. We booked him right at the port. you can call him to guarantee a tour on the day you are in port. His phone # is 242 359 1296. he is very well known on the Island everybody was honking or waving at him during our tour. I beleive all ages would enjoy the day, nothing not to enjoy. The first stop was at a small local market that sold great frozen drinks with or without alcohol. They were I think, fresh strwaberry, mago and pineapple. 2 for 5 bucks if you wanted rum in them all they asked for was a tip. Then our tour continued (very imformative) we also stopped Our Lucaya beach and market. He showed us where Carnival ships go in for dry dock, the baptist ministers house ( I wont tell you why the minister is so important or wealthy) I have been to Nassau several times, and I enjoyed Nassau, But I must say Freeport is much nicer.

Could you please send me the info too @ jwimbush81@yahoo.com? My family and I are cruising in Feb to Freeport. I was not sure what to do until I found this post...Thank you!

Freeport's port is not near any real "tourist" areas. Port Lucaya is a $5 (may have gone up) shared taxi ride from the port. It is not in walking distance and would NOT rent scooter, maybe a car depending on how long in port. Unless you plan on renting a car, best bet is to go to Port Lucaya your first time. Lots to see, all kinds of shops, some like Nassau. Nice beach, casino (Treasure Bay), pharmacy, all kinds of water sports. Many of the cruise ships water adventures start from here so you will see lots of your fellow cruisers. There are plenty of beaches that are completely or nearly deserted along the island, just hard to get to without a taxi or car. If for some reason you cannot hook up with "G" there will be plenty like him at the port. After your first time you might want to look at other ideas.... DO not go to out of the way beaches without a guide, taxi that will pick you up, or something like that. Deserted beaches are wonderful but Freeport does have a dark side, just saying.

Is Gold Rock beach safe? How long does it take to drive there from cruise port?

Yes generally it is...

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Grand+Bahama+Hwy&daddr=Unknown+road&hl=en&ll=26.562735,-78.619537&spn=0.231541,0.445976&sll=26.518353,-78.753562&sspn=0.028954,0.055747&geocode=FVbvlQEdvZJT-w%3BFeSjlAEdzQ5O-w&mra=dme&mrsp=1&sz=15&t=m&z=12

From port to Gold Rock... unless you get a group in a van/taxi it would be way to expensive to go BUT if you do, make sure you go to Bishop's for conch fritters, best ever! If you contract someone to take you make sure you have a time to be picked up as very few taxis out that way.

:)thanks, very helpful:).What is your opinion on Taino vs Lucaya beach? Which would be less crowded, most beautiful? We like waves, and palms

Well Taino is near Lucaya and you can take a ferry over to it. Some like it, but you either need to book something thru the ship or pay a fee I think to use the facilities... any waves would be the same on both beaches.

Hope it helps...

We were in freeport on Jan 23,2012. We took a tour for $30 pp it was awesome, I would highly recommend it. our driver was extremely informative, we went to a local market & the Our Lucaya market and beach. Toured the whole Island saw low, middle, and very high income levels of residence. The tour was 4 1/2 hrs. We were back to the port at 2pm. I have his card at home (I am at work) if you are interested. I think the driver name is "G"

Hi, I agree that Mr Geo should be paying you for this service. Please send me his info too. tncosborn@yahoo.com and thanks so much for the review.

Port Lucaya has no fee for the beach, sometimes the resort oceanfront will stop people from "cutting" thru but there is a walkway to the right that is a public walkway... looking at the casino go to the right or just ask anyone(Ok not another tourist). The resort is the Reef and Grand Lucayan, two separate hotels with a casino sorta in between. All beaches like the US are public from mean high tide down which means you can basically walk on any beach... stay at the tourist areas unless you have local friends.
