Lobster...

Recommended Posts

On our 18 night RC cruise in December there was only 1 night that had lobster tail and then you only got half a tail. Our waiter was nice and brought me a couple extra half pieces. They used to give you the whole tail, but I guess they are looking for ways to save money.

We had no Lobster on our cruise from Italy. We were told they did not do lobster on the European trips. Not sure if that is the case or not, but we missed having it on our trip.

That is strange they would say that. Ours was an 18 night Mediterranean cruise Nov/Dec out of Southampton, UK on the Independence of the Seas. Perhaps it was because of the length of our cruise that they decided to include it.

On the 14 night t/a on Liberty last April there were 2 nights with lobster. We received a whole tail on the fisherman's plate and also on the surf & turf plate. But it doesn't matter as the waiters already had more lobster waiting. You didn't even have to request it. But perhaps once the ships are supplied in Europe the menu changes.

Europeans are not lobster crazy like a lot of Americans, so having lobster on European cruises is not a must.

Would you not sail on RCCL anymore if there was no lobster on a European cruise? We have friends, experienced cruisers, who made that decision. Lobster is that important to them. Would you drop RCCL over lobster?

Wow, they stopped cruising over lobster not being served?!? I enjoy lobster but for some reason it always seems to be tasteless and not all that good every time I cruise. Is it just me?

Actually, I could not care less if they serve that critter that they call a lobster or not.

We had one lobster night this past October on the Freedom during a 7 night cruise. I think that it was called the Captains seafood plate. It came with a small lobstertail and shrimp. The lobster has not been very well cooked or flavorfull on the last couple of cruises that we have been on. It is not a dinner night that I look forward to more than any other night.

I can't speak for other European countries but in the UK lobster is a luxury food as it's very expensive over here ,I would love to be served lobster on our RCI med cruises but alas it's not on the menu , we did a med P&O cruise and lobster was served on formal night ,it was most welcome , I would love to see RCI include the lobster tail on the med cruises and I don't agree that it's because we are not fans of lobster , it's probably more of a cost cutting scheme for RCI , if anything it would be more appreciated on the med cruises as it's our luxury food and it sounds to me from reading many posts on the subject that Americans are not particularly bothered if they serve it or not , I keep reading how tasteless , dry , tough and so so it is , I would love to have it , we did a caribbean cruise on freedom and had the lobster tail and thought it was delicious .

I agree. I can get nice plump lobster tails in the market that run about $4.99 each for the size served by RCI. Actually, I can get live Maine lobsters for $5.99 per pound most weeks and the store will even steam them for me free of charge. So I fail to see why someone would quit sailing a line they otherwise enjoy because they can't get a dried out tail of who knows what when they can get real lobster anywhere.

I've only had lobster one time...didn't have much flavor IMO - I was told you gotta use butter...IMO, it shouldn't need butter. A decent steak doesn't need steak sauce anything else for it to taste good (unless it's overdone). That being said, I might try lobster if/when it's offered on our next cruise, just to give it a second try.

Great! Another "I live in so and so and can get lobster for 4.99 a pound" post! :o

MOST people are not that fortunate and are quiet pleased with the lobster that is served on board and YES it IS lobster too. Its just not the whole live Maine Lobster that most lobster snobs are accustomed to. Its a frozen, warm water lobster that doesnt have claws etc and you are only served the tail.

It has never been "dry" and has always been cooked just right when I have tried it and that last two times Ive had it, the tails were rather large.

YMMV but some of us look forward to the lobster on board, especially when accompanied by a nice piece of Prime rib for a "surf and turf" special :)

Would I quit cruising with RCI if they stopped serving it though? Absolutely NOT!

We just got off the Brilliance from Rome to Amsterdam and we had lobster ZERO nights.

The only lobster I had was in a seafood dish that I ordered in Portofino's and it was a tiny piece.

I adore lobster - but I am picky about having it out. I am another lucky NJ person who can get it fairly inexpensively and would rather have it whole steamed at home where I can make a mess. :)

On the Navigator of the Seas May 20 sailing, the Executive Chef said that they opt for the Giant Shrimp instead of the lobster on European sailings. He cited that Europeans prefer the shrimp (although he didn't mention that Americans constituted the majority of the passengers).

The shrimp was quite tasty and I actually thought it was a little better than the lobster. However, you only get two "Giant" shrimp per order; I think you'd need three or four to match the size of a rock lobster tail.

The Giant Shrimp was also in short supply; my waiter was only able to secure three orders, which was about right considering that I had the prime rib, too.

You really don't have call people snobs just because they may not like the taste of that warm water critter. I just don't like it. It doesn't make me a snob. And for the record, if I had the choice of a good steak or a "real" Maine lobster, I'd most likely choose the steak. I just don't see any lobster as being anything to get too excited about.

Being from the UK, I agree 100%

We were on Adventure out of Malaga last week and the MDR food choices were well below those we've enjoyed on RCI before.

You could order a tail in the MDR (not specialist) but at an additional cost of $24.95.

We DID enjoy our cruise and the MDR food BUT it has lost a lot of the appeal we once enjoyed.

This really bugs me , I don't know where they get their facts from , I am sure no lobster on european sailings is simply a cost cutting ploy , give me a nice lobster tail over two giant shrimp any day and I am sure most Europeans would agree , unfortunately we don't get the choice as it isn't offered .

I wasnt calling anyone out personally I dont think? That "slang" term is used here MANY times i have seen when referring to wine, balconies or many other things.

My apologies :o

It just never fails around here that anytime lobster is brought up on this board, people from the Northeast have to chime in and say how bad the lobster served on the ship sucks and how cheap they can get REAL lobster at home. Kind of "snobbish" acting to me but I digress :o Some people actually look forward to that warm water critter and enjoy it. I just dont see the point in "raining on their parade" is all.

Again, my apologies to anyone i might have offended.
