firstcruiserDB Posted July 11, 2012 #1 Share Posted July 11, 2012 We are looking into the Summit next June. We would be flying into Newark, I believe. We always like to stay somewhere after our cruise for a couple of days before we have to go home. We are used to the Florida ports where we can stay on the beach and relax two more days. What could we do after the cruise for a couple of days in the Bayonne area? We will rent a car and don't mind driving a couple of hours, but we are not familiar with the area at all and have no idea where to go. Can anyone recommend a resort for a post cruise stay? Thanks so much for any help you can offer!
njhorseman Posted July 11, 2012 #2 Share Posted July 11, 2012 If you are staying for a couple of days post cruise I wouldn't stay in the Bayonne/Newark area. It's urban and industrialized, and about the furthest thing from a resort area you could imagine. There are no resorts in the area...if you want a resort atmosphere you might want to consider driving a couple of hours to the Jersey Shore and staying somewhere like Atlantic City, Ocean City or Cape May. megr1125 Posted July 11, 2012 #3 Share Posted July 11, 2012 Yes..you'll be better served by going to Atlantic City or someplace as mentioned above....you really don't want to stay near the pier area/EWR after your cruise... there are hotels that are near the shore...though not really big resorts per se... (unless you're in Atlantic City...then there are the big casino hotels....) what do you think you'd like to do? we can help you better that way.... firstcruiserDB Posted July 11, 2012 Author #4 Share Posted July 11, 2012 Thank you both so much! I'm anxious about sailing the Summit, but I hate the thought of giving up my two last days of vacation! Here's what we are used to doing to end our vacation.... -Staying at a nice resort on the beach -Having A couple of great places to eat -A pool area to relax for those last two days... I'm not familiar with the Atlantic City area. We do, though, love Vegas I guess, but it's not exactly a place to relax! Casinos are fun for us, though! Any suggestions? We are willing to rent a car and drive from the port. We could, also, fly back to Chicago from a different airport than Newark. Thanks, again, for any help you can offer us! chrisc71 Posted July 11, 2012 #5 Share Posted July 11, 2012 AC might work for you. It is not as intense and overwhelming as Vegas. There is an airport in AC, though not sure if they have flights to Chicago. Philadelphia is not far away, less than an hour. For hotels I would suggest Borgata, my favorite but not right on the beach. Or Revel which just opened and is on the beach.
firstcruiserDB Posted July 11, 2012 Author #6 Share Posted July 11, 2012 How awful is the drive from the port to Atlantic City? On a Sunday morning? How far is it from a resort on the beach to the AC airport? Thanks, again, for your help!
138east Posted July 11, 2012 #7 Share Posted July 11, 2012 Another more upscale destination to consider is the Hampton's. On a Sunday in June it shouldn't be too bad going out there and most folks will be clearing out to return to NY that day. It's pricey, but you can poke around Sag Harbor, go out to Montauk, go to the beach, and dine out in a more charming atmosphere than Atlantic City. How far is it from a resort on the beach to the AC airport? Thanks, again, for your help! Under ideal conditions it takes about two hours to drive from the Bayonne area to Atlantic City, but on a Sunday in summer traffic to the Jersey Shore can be very heavy, so I would expect the drive to be significantly longer...maybe three hours. The Atlantic City airport is just a couple of miles outside the city off the Atlantic City Expressway...maybe a 15 minute drive.
megr1125 Posted July 12, 2012 #9 Share Posted July 12, 2012 the GOOD thing is that, while yes a lot of people will be going to AC on Sunday AM...GENERALLY (though not always) rates are a little lower than say Fri or Sat night... if you ahve players cards from any Vegas places...see if they have a location in AC...or at least visit websites and stuff..i get email alerts daily for deals and i rarely spend more then $20 every 3 or 4 months!!:p Getting from AC to Philly airport is pretty easy....basically a straight drive...or the airport in AC might work but you're really limited by a whopping selection of..Spirit Air.... Thanks so much for any help you can offer! After a wonderful cruise to beautiful ports, going to the Jersey shore area will be a tremendous letdown. I live in Jersey so I can say that. It's nice, but it's no tropical beach! :D What about just going into New York City for a few days? See a show, or go to Times Square or Rockefeller Center. Natural History Museum, Museum of Modern Art, etc. Plenty to see and do!
Rare Keith1010 Posted July 13, 2012 #11 Share Posted July 13, 2012 Whatever you do, be sure to also fly in at least one day before the cruise so that a flight delay or cancellation does not cause you to miss the cruise. Keith
firstcruiserDB Posted July 13, 2012 Author #12 Share Posted July 13, 2012 Thanks to all of you for your great suggestions! I really appreciate your help! We know our last two days after the cruise will be different that what we are used to (laying on a Florida beach!), but we are looking forward to seeing someplace we've never seen before. It seems like renting a car and driving to Atlantic City might be the best idea. Can someone, please, discuss the drive from the port to a nice resort in AC? (What's the best place to stay?? We'd love a great pool area!) We are from the Midwest and don't have tons of experience in driving in big cities. I know it should be about a 2 hour drive, but is there a good chance that traffic could be horrible on a Sunday morning? Can we rent a car at the port? Thanks, once again, for any help you can offer. We certainly appreciate it!

We certainly appreciate it! sorry, no car rentals at the port. i believe the closest would be at newark international airport. its a very easy drive from there to atlantic city. just take the NJ Turnpike south to exit 11 (Garden State Parkway south) and take the garden state parkway south to exit 38 (rte. 42, atlantic city expressway) heading east and follow the atlantic city expressway right to atlantic city. traffic should be fairly light on a sunday morning so i'd say you're looking at about a 2 hour drive. the Borgata has a great pool. chrisc71 Posted July 13, 2012 #14 Share Posted July 13, 2012 Borgata or Water Club are great and on the same property. But they are away from the beach. For direct beach access check Revel which is brand new property.
megr1125 Posted July 13, 2012 #15 Share Posted July 13, 2012 Since newer places have opened, other properties seem to be trying to up their game a bit. The brand new Revel is on the boardwalk/ocean and is supposed to be lovely...though expensive...Borgata and Water club are in the "marina district" and while not on the beach, you could get there taking the 'jitney' try these for info: http://www.atlanticcitynj.com/ http://jitneyac.com/ I don't mind Harrahs..also in the Marina but nice..and the Golden Nugget (used to be Trump Marina) is renovating the whole place..some is done...but it should be all done when you get there... Trump Taj Mahal is over the top, but decent....they've renovated and it is a little less hmmm...over-decorated...HAHAA Several of the hotels have seasonal beach bars that can be fun..... hope that helps...
