My Sister is just off the Alaskan Spirit cruise and got the binoculars as her Platinum gift..She said they were terrible and she gave them to her new door neighbor's 10 year old son..I guess theres another cut-back and everyone was right about them being cheap looking..She also told me the slot machines were so tight she only played a little the first two days......Dennis

They are a FREE gift- I wouldn't think they would be very high quality. Compared to soft sided coolers and cheap backpacks I don't see them as a "cut back". I will happily take mine.

The insulated thermos in it's own zippered case is the best platinum gift I ever got, with the picture frame coming in second. The worst has been the notepad with the mini pen.

My favorite Platinum gift was a carnival tote bag. I was looking forward to getting a new one when they switched to the thermos. We had about 8 of those and started giving them away - but they were a great gift that we used a lot. I also gave away several of the picture frames to non-platinum friends sailing with us. I like the back packs we received in April too. Wondering if we will get them again on the Breeze in October along with the binoculars.

I LOVED the cooler and the back pack too. While I am grateful, if I recieve the new gift, I will find someone one the ship who could really use them, as I never had any before and really don"t have any use for them.

Cooler and backpack and thermos were fine nice that they are doing something different as how many of the others does one need.

We started giving the gifts away to friends made on the cruise.

Glad that they are giving us something different so no complaints here.

We just got off the Sensation yesterday and received the black sling bags (backpacks) instead of the binoculars, but we were actually hoping to get the sling bags, so we're happy. I suspect we'll get the binoculars on the Spirit in September, unless they change before then:eek: At any rate, we're going to take our own binoculars just in case;)

I agree about the notepad and pen. Love the Thermos, and the backpack we got in May.

Hearing the binocs they give you are pretty lousy, I think I'll take my own for Spirit -Alaska in Aug. also!

I got the cooler and used it for carrying my lunch to work, but it is not waterproof. Bought the backpack on e-bay because I'm sure by October the binoculars will be on the Valor. Have multiple pairs of binoculars, but never complain about a gift.

i like the pen and paper with the leather case, i use it all the time for work. i love my backpack and the blue duffle bag i recieved on the magic last year (my fave!). however as stated the binoculars are FREE, they arent going to be great quality that you would get for a $500 pair and a dept. store. as far as the slot machines being tight....really? duh! aren't all casino slot machines tight most of the time?! my brother did win $500 on the last cruise we took on the slots. we go up to hochunk at the dells a bit, NEVER win

I agree... LOVE the tote. We have three. Very good quality and I'm just waiting for the one I've been using since 2005 to wear out before I break in one of the other ones. Next favorite the thermos. I think we have six of those and lord knows how many picture frames. Maybe ten? Four of the coolers and four of the backpacks. I'm looking forward to the binoculars even if they aren't the best quality.

I am not expecting the binoculars to be anyhing great but I always bring my own good ones anyway. But at any rate has to be better than a deck of cards or a coupon for 10% off a drink...:p

How about a Buy One Get One Free Drink coupon for each day of the cruise....or maybe a free 8x10 picture? Both would cost Carnival less money and be better than most of the crap they give out. That tote bag looks pretty nice, it was given out before the thermos, which was my first platinum gift. Every gift since then has gone down in quality. Thermos to picture frame to note pad to cooler.

Cooler has come in handy on cruises.

For other gifts they are not classified as brilliant by Carnival so not gonna happen.

We received two pair of binocilars on DREAM last week; something that I didn't expect and they're not bad at all.

Good to know since we will be on the Dream this weekend. I use the lunch cooler everyday for work. My red one just ripped so now I am on the blue one. We have enough picture frames and note pads. I really liked the tote bags and could use another but binoculars will be a different gift

Did she really think that they were gonna be any good

If I'm not mistaken John Heald said they were going to be "brilliant!"

No, seriously, they (either Heald one of of the executives who gave a Q&A on VIFP) stated that their "increased investment in the platinum gift" was a major new perk for Platinum guests under VIFP. If I wasn't at work (alas I am) and had time (alas I don't) I'd go search for the exact language regarding the new binoculars.

Did I think they would be any good? Haha, no, of course not... but it seems to be yet another thing that was misrepresented with regards to VIFP.
