Dubai Currency

Most will take US$. We have been there several times on cruises and never gotten any local currency for Dubai. However, being there longer, you are more likely to do better to convert some money. You will generally get a worse exchange rate when spending dollars.

Can you get some right there at the cruise terminal? Also, if you give them USD or Euros what kind of change do you get back?

Thank you,

Sherry

Sherry, expect that you will get back the local currency.

I do not remember a place to convert money at the cruise ship terminal.

Rates in the cruise terminal have a low spread between buy and sell and have no commission. Local currency is good for small shops, metro, and to ride the abra across Dubai Creek . USD is widely accepted including taxis but you may get a poor exchange rate. You can also find currency exchange in the malls and by the Gold Souk.

We rae staying in Dubai for 3 days following our cruise - will we be able to manage everywhere with US Dollare or Euros or will be need any local currency. Thanks

You will need some local currency for things like taxis (which are very reasonable) and for shopping, although credit cards are accepted.

Which cruise are you on? I have just booked Serenade of the Seas departing 25th Feb next. Will be spending time pre and post cruise with my son and his family - son posted to Dubai for 5 years with his job. I visited there at Christmas and Easter - it is a magical place and I am sure you will love it.

I live in Dubai and definitely recommend using local currency for taxis, metro, small expenses, etc. etc. There are money exchanges available in the airport, cruise terminal and shopping malls and the local currency is pegged to the US$ so exchange rate is always the same at banks and official exchange houses, whereas taxis, traders etc. would use modified rates if you paid them in US$..

Can you suggest a good tour guide or company for a "best of Dubai" tour on a turnaround day we will have there next Spring?

Thanks

The Sheikh Mohammed Cultural Center does an excellent job of introducing people to the old part of Dubai along the creek or Bastakiya. If your timing is right, you can even arrange for breakfast or lunch.

The Big Bus Tour HOHO offers two routes and also a night tour. This will give you a good overview of the city.

Arabian Adventures and North Tours offer both city and desert tours with many reviews both on CC and Tripadvisor

Taxis are also an easy way to get around and see Dubai on your own. They are metered, clean, and the drivers will speak enough English to get you to the tourist spots. There is also an excellent Metro system that connects the creek area with Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. It does not connect to the cruise terminal or run along Jumeirah Road for the beaches. For seeing Burj Al Arab (sail shaped hotel) you will need both a taxi and a reservation to get inside but can enjoy beautiful views of it from the Madinat Jumeirah complex "next door." Enjoy your short visit. You may want to stay longer!

Having never been to Dubai before, I am not familiar with what are the most important places to visit and the logistics for getting from place to place in the most efficient manner. The HOHO bus, while good when time is not limited, would involve lost time waiting for a bus after getting off at a site and then needing to go to the next desired place.

With the limited time we will have there (about 7 hours), I really need a tour (with a guide) that would include the Burj Khalifa.

I understand that taxis and the Metro system are good ways to get around, but I would need to plan the logistics without having been there before.

I will contact the two tour companies that you provided the links to, so, thanks again.

North Tours "Dubai City Tours" covers the highlights of both old and new Dubai. If I were to make an adjustment in the itinerary, I would not go all the way out to the Palm and spend more time either in Bastakiya or in the Burj Khalifa area. Let me know if you have further questions.
