Any suggestions or recommendations for a private tour around the island?

You'll need to do some research. There is at least one thread here with a link to the Tourism board that should have tour operators listed.

 

Or just look through the thread titles and read the ones that sound like something you might be interested in.

Am I correct in assuming that we can just walk off the ship and find taxi drivers or others who would be willing to give us a 1 - 2 hour drive and tour around the island? Are there actual tour operators who would do this? What would the cost be for 2 people?

After much research I have found one and have booked with them.

"Island Trams Grand Turk" $29/person.

Take a look at their website and email them with any questions...they are quite quick to answer.:)

Can't help you with actual tour company names, but there were vans offering tours for $25/pp when I was there early this year. Just walk off the ship and thru the cruise center. There will be plenty of people willing to take you around the island.

This is a port where I would wait till you get there.

 

Outside the terminal area you will find that you can book a van for a tour. We did. They will take you all around the island if you would like to do that and you can stop at various places of interest.

Yes you will find taxis that will be happy to take you around. The island is pretty small so a couple of hours is all you need.
