La Terre? kidding, right?

I've heard a few people mention La Terre wines in the Concierge's Lounge (LOS), and I hope this isn't the winery in California that sells 1.75 liter for $3.71.

I don't drink much, and I really only enjoy red, although not a fan of Merlot at all.....or Zinfandel.

Looks like I may just order a decent wine package, although it is just me that drinks. Maybe 3 or 4 bottles of decent red on 14 day cruise (enjoy a Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir or even Cab/Franc).

Do they have smaller wine package where you can just get red?

I believe the smallest wine package available is 5 bottles. You can choose all red if you like.

There aren't many of the wines you like on the packages. Just order by the bottle. You can see the full wine list by following the link in my signature.

You can get a 5 bottle wine package, and there are three different price points: gold, platinum, and diamond. We've purchased the platinum package several times, and our favorite red in that package is the Robert Mondavi Solaire Cabernet. It's a very good mid-price wine (about $30 a bottle on the ship) that you might enjoy.

You made this price up right? La Terre only comes in 750L & 1.5L and you would be lucky to buy a 750L for $3.71. It's not the greatest but I'll drink a glass or two for free.

I have given up drinking wine in the CL....even free it's not worth drinking that Le Terrible stuff. It's just an utter disgrace that is what Royal offers their suite guests:rolleyes: who pay big money for suites.

Totally agree. If they would only spend another few dollars a bottle, they could at least offer something drinkable.

True, but the funny thing is, in multiple blind taste tests most people can't tell the difference between $10 bottles of wine and $50 bottles, or which is which. And a lot of wine snobs have liked boxed wine, until they were told what it was.

We drink wine we like. I like sweeter wines and also drink Pinot Grigio and the only time we buy by the "label" is when we know we already like something.

Yea...that is if Royal offered something that was $10/bottle in the first place.

That is true. The $28 bottle of Beringer White Zinfandel they sell onboard is less than $6 retail. We're in our third GS in a few weeks. Our first trip I know for sure they weren't serving La Terre. Last Oct, I couldn't tell you what they were serving. This next trip will also be our first as Diamond's so we'll see what we end up doing since we can get more "free" variety in the CL than in the Diamond event. We don't always drink wine.

I agree and we met someone who works for Columbia Crest in California and he told us La Terre was a Mondavi wine. Certainly an acceptable table wine, nothing crazy good but acceptable...we drink it. People turn up their noses who have not even had a glass:rolleyes: 2Buck Chuck is acceptable too and is actually the left over wine each season from many vineyards, some of them like Columbia Crest are very good vineyards too.

After some research: Out of Woodbridge California, hence vineyards supposedly owned by Mondavi

La Terre Cellars, an exclusive on-premise brand available at dining establishments nationwide, is easily recognized by its distinctive label. Known for its consistent quality and affordable pricing, La Terre is crafted in the traditional California style, which complements a wide range of foods. Conveniently packaged in 750 ml and 1.5-liter sizes, the brand is available in Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and White Zinfandel.

They apparently make a more expensive $14.64 bottle of Merlot and got a 4 glass out of 5 rating on this web site however the brand is owned by someone in Vietnam, but the fields could definitely belong to Mondavi:

I, should say we are red wine drinkers and cannot tolerate the Le Terre, in the d lounge, Lucky Duck from Walmart is better, well sometimes. I have often wondered, since Le Terre is on the wine list in the MDR, is that a different merlot or Cab Sav, than that go awful stuff in the D lounge?

I am very aware of those studies....and the more interesting ones are regarding top shelf vodka.

However, there is a palatable difference between a $3 bottle of wine and a $12 bottle of wine. I am way beyond the decade where I'm going to drink awful wine because it is free. No thank you. If you spend thousands of dollars for a cruise, I just don't get the mentality to drink alcohol, particularly wine (don't mix it with anything), that is awful but free. But I also realize that everyone spends money differently. Like the person that cannot believe you spent a couple thousand for a balcony only to drop $3k on day 3 in the casino. Oh vey.

The $2 Buck Chuck was a perfect example of how media can change perception. When it first hit Trader Joe's, I believe it was a 2000 or 2001 grape. It was actually drinkable. You wouldn't serve it on a special occasion, but it was drinkable. But it was that very first year that the grapes were awesome. Subsequent years were, well.....let's just say sales kept up because people really didn't know or understand one year's grapes from the next. I remember being with a group that had a couple bottles of this stuff, long after the first year frenzy. Three people spit it out.....and, they didn't have a clue what it was before they spit it out. Turns out the others were just being overly gracious. We all had a great laugh though.

I did type out the wrong size earlier....I meant 1.50, not 1.75 lit.

Most people (not all) that spend what they do for suites, AND are regular wine drinkers, are probably not going to drink the stuff in the CL because it's free. Yes, there are exceptions, but I'm not going to drink Bud, or MJD or whatever else they serve in the CL because my days of drinking domestic beer (exception is Samuel Adam's) ended in my mid 30's. Oh trust me, I know that Bud is still the #1 beer selling in America so the fact that I won't waste my calories on the liquid hurts no one. I like a Bass Ale if I'm going to have a bottle of beer. I prefer draft micro-brews, but when in Rome.....well, when in Rome, I'll pass. Seriously, I would never drink a Bud because that was all they had...this has happened on a few occasions and I'll select a soda.

For the record, when we booked our suite, I had no clue about the CL. When we were in an OS on the Grandeur, this was not available. We've been cruising with Princess and Celebrity since our last cruise w/RCI.

I will buy the wines by the bottle. There are a few on the list that I enjoy very much.

Thanks everyone.

:-)

It is the worst wine I have ever had the displeasure of drinking. It makes no sense that top shelf liquors are available in the CL but the wine is the worst of the worst. There have been posts about this issue before and no improvement while many have expressed displeasure for several years. It is one area that really makes RC look bad. We pay a lot of $$ to stay in a suite. I don't think it's unreasonable to have better wines and more choices.

There are some very good, inexpensive wines out there that are well-rated and taste good. RC buys massive quantities and, I'm sure, gets discounted accordingly.
