Back from Liberty cruise

Went on the 5 night to Belize and Cozumel. Had a great time! We arrived at 11:40 and were on the ship by noon. Departure was just as easy. We carried our bags off at 8:30 and were in a taxi by 8:45. Liberty personnel were at the elevators telling everyone to just go straight to Deck 1.

Only ate in the Windjammer three times. Once for lunch at arrival and twice for breakfast. Never had a hard time finding a table (for 6) and the waiters were reasonably attentive. It is a buffet after all.

Had the late seating in the MDR and service was fantastic. Was a little nervous about ordering the lamb after reading some reviews but it was cooked perfect and fell of the bone. Prime rib was average. All the soups were very good. Escargot was replaced by small scallops but the dinner portion were large. Night 4 they have a fried seafood platter. Probably their worst dish, at least on our trip. Salmon was still moist, all cooked medium. The duck was another table favorite.

Attended the ice show, Up in the Air and Saturday Night Fever. All were excellent. The rest of our party went to the comedian and I received mixed reviews. None bad however.

The only issue we had all trip was the smoking on the Promenade. We enjoy sitting in the Hook and Claw with a beer. This trip we couldn't even sit at the tables outside without triggering the allergies. Surprisingly the casino was better than other cruises we've been on. Even played for an hour one night without really noticing it.

Overall the trip was excellent and the staff wonderful!

What type of cabin were you in and on what deck? What is your opinion? Also, what age were most of the voyagers?

Did you happen to notice if the new menu still includes a nightly pasta with marinera sauce? We've got teens who want regular pasta and we'll be on the Liberty soon.

I think the kid's menu still has pasta. And adults can order from the kid's menu. I just my try a banana split next time. Does Sorrento's (deck 5) have pasta?

Thanks for sharing.

What other areas were for smoking? Were they bad?

We were on Liberty for the 1/14 sailing and found smokers at many of the bars and passengers in the cabin next to ours smoked on the balcony even though there was a sign on the outside of the cabin that said no smoking!

The cabin is non smoking - not the balcony. All cabins are non smoking - smoking allowed on all balconies so they were smoking in the right place.

Thank you for the review. We will be on her in March. Good to hear embarkation and disembarkation process went smoothly and quickly.

What did you do while in Belize?

We went on the zip line excursion through the ship. It was fun but it's an hour and a half trip both ways.

Quite a few of the bars are smoking including the pool bars. Since they are all open the smoke drifts. Ended up in Olive or Twist most afternoons and ordering from the waiters at the pool.

Inside 2421. Very quiet. One night we heard the Catacomb music but it wasn't bothersome. Very wide range of ages. Not a lot of kids.

Last time I was on Liberty, I thought the only smoking venues were the nightclub (Catacombs--and i think only the 2nd level), Boleros, and the casino. Otherwise, just one side of then open decks. (and balconies). I don't believe there is anywhere on the Promenade that allows smoking--but smoke could drift up from Boleros or the casino, I suppose?

We were on the Liberty a few weeks ago and found that while there weren't a huge number of smokers on board they did smoke wherever they liked. It didn't matter if there was an ashtray or not. I was next to some guys in the Solarium who smoked (not in a smoking area) and flicked their ashes on the deck, people smoked around the pool bars (outside of the designated area) and on the last day a group was sitting in a table in the promenade are smoking. I don't believe they enforce the smoking areas on this ship.

That had been my experience on past cruises also. Was very surprised when we went in to the Hook and Claw Pub and saw smoking was allowed. Ashtray on every inside table. Unfortunately as the front is open all that smoke drifts out so the outside seating is just as bad. And the place was crowded most of the time.

Since my wife is seriously allergic to smoke, and I am not fond of it either, I think we will pass on Holland America. Is smoking allowed on most of the other lines? If it is not is there strict no smoking enforcement?

Celebrity has a more strict no-smoking policy -- No smoking on balconies or in the casino. Carnival Paradise tried "all non-smoking" for the entire ship (including the crew) a few years ago, but I guess it failed to get enough passengers.
