Congress wants answers on cruise ship debacle

LOL, the congress is a bunch of inept goofballs, but if you don't think the government should be looking at this, you're goofier than they are.

 

The standards here, for some people, are so low it's amazing. It's like this is perfectly okay. But if you were stuck on a stinky plane that didn't have a gate for 4-5 hours, it would be the end of the world. Well, who tries to keep that from happening?

4000 people almost drowning at sea..that close to it..begs some attention at least...even though the cogs move way too slowly and inefficientlly....

I'm sooooo happy to find a conversation on the internet that is bi-partisan. :D No matter what side we are on, we can all agree that the congress is almost useless! But anyway, why the heck would they get involved? I'm thinking that the Dept. of Transportation and the Coast Guard will both be investigating.

i dont think congress can do anything but eat a grain of salt. This is why the ships is registered in a foreign country, to bypass all of the require US laws and requirements

 

If vessels sail in and out of US or Canadian ports, they can be inspected for ship safety. This happens all the time with freighters as well - foreign registry notwishstanding.

 

Congress is doing its job.

Who almost drowned? Are you confusing this with the Costa Concordia?

 

If they review the potential for drowning they will find that the ships systems worked flawlessly. A potential explosive situation was stopped by the CO2 fire suppression system. This was a fantastic field test of the system.

To be fair, I don't think a flawlessly working system coupled with contingency plans should result in passengers stranded for 5 days.

So a US Senator, a Rockefeller no less, has absolutely nothing better to do during the week than listen to innuendo and unsubstantiated reports about a cruise ship and then send off a letter to an Admirable who has plenty to do outside of this little witch hunt and demand financial answers that will take months to compile. Other than passing over some water and escorting the ship, both of which the CG does on a regular bases, what expenses would the CG have had? And wasn't the splendor escorted by navy not CG?

 

Boy I dislike pompous arsed politicians with an agenda. Obviously the cruise line industry didn't fill his re-election coffers.

The fact that Congress is watching and asking questions can not hurt...no matter how cynical we all are with government...I like light shining on this subject in a timely fashion and all involved and inquiry...inquiry pushes for answers of what really is going on..then passengers can give pressure informed. Cruise lines have lots of offshore out of country loopholes..but we still pay the bill and things can get safer for everyone. This whole thing is a sad blessing in disguise in a longer line of closely intervalled issues.

 

Agreed - I am very cynical about our government but shing the light on this can only benefit all of us

The original fire thread has had a half million views and almost 5800 comments (most of which were uninformed speculation) and now everyone is objecting to congress (which thrives on uninformed speculation) from investigating. Actually it is there job.

It was preventable. Not a random act of God Carnival had no control over.

 

It is up to Carnival to prevent fires aboard their own ships.

 

Congress has every right to look into this matter and should.

 

I agree, there needs to be at least a little more U.S. oversight from NTSB since most ships homeport in the U.S.

Ok all you congress haters....ever think maybe, just maybe...something good COULD come out of having the US government look into this?? I for one would welcome having Carnival being held under the micrscope on this. I'm not a Carnival hater...and I've been on the Truimph each of the last two years...and booked again this November. And while its true the media goes way overboard with their negative coverage, it is true the ship sailed after having just expierenced some engine room troubles. Was this a coincidence?...maybe it was...maybe it wasnt...but lets not just accept everything Carnival tells us. They afterall make bookoo amounts of $$$ if they can keep their ships in the water. Could there be just a little chance they get complacent or careless?? If so, I'd like to know before I step onboard. I love cruising..love it a lot....but I kinda like living too. Ever wonder what could have happened to that ship if it would have conked out while trying to avert a hurricane. I know thats a worst case scenario maybe, but even a big thunderstorm would have made life very scary onboard. So my theory is let congress look into it. Maybe they will help, maybe I'll be laughing along with the rest of you when they are done, but these guys get paid a lot of money to represent us...and we DO elect them. I just hope this whole issue gets fixed, and these ships remain safe to sail.:)

A fire suppression system is supposed to put out a fire.

 

The fire when it flashed cooked off all the electronics in that room almost instantly, no fire suppression system in the world would have stopped that.

 

You can burn wire with a lighter after-all.

 

You can question their lack of a backup system, but the systems in place worked as designed.
