In need of Pre existing Medical Condition Waiver Travel Insurance

Recommended Posts

Medical History summary

July 2010: First diagnosis of Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer with mets in liver and bones

March 2011: Cancer stabilised

December 2012: Cancer has become active again in liver and bones

Because of the cancer becoming active again, my oncologist advised cancellation of Grand Princess 49 day South American cruise January 2013. We are awaiting our insurance payout for Pre-existing medical condition waiver.

We are quite keen to try the repeat cruise on Crown Princess in February 2014 but cannot get travel insurance here in Australia or abroad for Pre-existing medical condition. Does anyone know how to rectify this problem please?

VERY sorry to hear about your medical condition.

Are you saying in your second sentence that your travel insurance company has given you a waiver for your pre-existing cancer illness?? Or in other words, you have been protected by insurance for any claim made because of your pre-exosting illness.

I ask because we have a sister who has cancer - would love to be able to take her on a cruise but can't see how we could.

I am not sure you will be able to find one given the reoccurrence of your cancer last year. We have a similar problem as psychiatric illness is never covered and our son suffers from a condition with the result that if we have needed to cancel because of him we are not able to claim.

Good luck in finding a policy and please post if you do find a company. As one who got off relatively unscathed from bc over 20 yrs ago, good luck with treatment.

Unfortunately, I doubt that you will be able to get cover, including pre existing, because of the recent return of your cancer.

In addition, your records will show that you are currently awaiting insurance payment for pre existing.

When we were finally able to get cover for my MIL in her 80s, with a letter from her doctor saying she was healthy and fit to travel, it excluded one condition. As she was going on her first overseas trip, no matter what (to US of all places for expensive medical expenses) we didn't bother looking up the medical exclusion. We carried the risk.

Go to www.mccabecentre.org this is an organisation that specialises in

the law & cancer.

From a recent conference I attended.

Insurance, discrimination and the law:Protecting the rights of cancer patients

They spoke about travel insurance and cancer patients. Here is the PPT presentation. It was most interesting

The example was QBE Travel Insurance v Bassanelli

I'm really sorry to hear that the cancer has returned. But I am thinking too that the Insurance policy could not cover the pre existing condition of BC so soon after initial diagnosis. I know we can't get similar cover for my husband who had cancer 30 years ago. We are not covered if the same type of cancer appears again regardless of location. Of course after 30 years that's highly unlikely.

I had a spinal operation 20 years ago and know that the conditions are that if you have "ever" had spinal surgery you are not covered for similar conditions.

Many insurances are like Pushka has pointed out. You can take out a policy but it will not cover any claims arising from the pre-existing or excluded conditions. The policy will pay out on other things though. I suppose, however, you are looking for cover in case you need to cancel for a cancer related issue. This is the bit I think you will find impossible. It sounded like the case cited by happyaussies was where an insurance company refused all insurance/would not sell a policy even with exclusions based on a medical history.
