Carnival Dream Stranded in St. Martin

Recommended Posts

The Carnival Dream is at the pier in St. Martin. It was supposed to sail at 5pm last night, but they are reporting generator problems, propulsion issues, overflowing toilets. Passengers are not being allowed off the ship.

Carnival Nightmare!

At least they are still docked but apparently passengers are not allowed to leave the ship. I don't know how comfortable I would be staying onboard for that sail back to Port Canaveral!

Agreed!! But if you don't have a passport, what choice do you have?

If I was on the ship and they let us off, I'd be leaving with my luggage and heading for the airport.

Wow! another horror story for Carnival. If this was a scheduled port of call, why not let the passengers off so they can use some facilities?

Am I missing the boat:confused:

Hopefully they get this resolved soon and the passengers can either leave the ship or be on their way home.

Sheesh, take a day or 2 away from the computer and see this.......Thanks for the link, I really appreciated being able to read what is happening.

I sure hope they get the ship back into operation, and clean (Sanitized) enough to set sail again.

Most importantly, I hope to heck they can get the passengers safely back to the US SOON!! And without all the headaches of the last incident!!

It almost does not look like the Dream is docked at the regular pier. There are already at least three ships in port. Is there two HAL ships Noordam and Westerdam then I think one of the Mega ships of the Sea is there as well there today?

I don't understand how passengers can not be allowed off the ship.

Are they being held prisoner or do they mean if they get off they can't get back on again?

I would have thought that if I were on a cruise I would be able to leave any time I wanted to.

I suppose they want to keep everyone on board so that when power is restored they can leave promptly. I don't know if the problems CAN be fixed quickly, just suggesting that's a possible reason.

I can't believe that there are three schedule ships plus this extra in St Maarten. The only times we were there, we were on the only ship in port.

My thoughts exactly!

My father just callled me to say he heard about this on the news. There was a report that there were some people stuck in elevators. (caution: this report is from "faux news")

They want to be able to account for who is on board and who is not - that s the official word. That system is down.

We only have ourselves to blame for this. If we keep sailing a line that now demonstrates a pattern of carelessness at best, recklessness at worst, we provide no disincentive for this nonsense.

The ships schedule in St. Maarten today are: Celebrity Summit, Freedom of the Seas, Noordam and Westerdam. Someone on the Carnival boards mentioned that Noordam was anchored and are tendering.

Edited to add: And I just saw another comment there that all ships are docked. :)

That's what I was thinking too. But, I guess a PP could be right about pax getting on & off and keeping that under control if they lose all power. Still, you'd think they'd give people a break somehow.

I'd be starting to panic a bit given the most recent events. Hoping they overcome the problems & can get on with their vacations.

It seems to me it would be good PR to let those who want to leave, leave, and pay for their flights home. That is, if people can get on a flight at the last minute out of St. Maarten.

At the very least, they should be allowed off the ship. Just designate an All Aboard time.

Agreed.......I don't know why they are not doing this....it is just not good business for Carnival.

Update on Carnival Dream

March 14, 2013- 10:45 am

The Carnival Dream has a technical issue with the ship’s backup emergency diesel generator which our engineering team is currently working on. Yesterday, during regularly scheduled testing of the ship’s emergency diesel generator, a malfunction occurred. At no time did the ship lose power and the ship’s propulsion systems and primary power source was not impacted. The ship is at dock in St. Maarten. All guests are safe and comfortable. There were periodic interruptions to elevators and restroom services for a few hours last night. However, all hotel systems are functioning normally and have been functional since approximately 12.30am.

While personnel continue to work on the technical issue we are making arrangements to fly all guests home via private charter flights and scheduled flights from St. Maarten. Guests on the current voyage will receive a refund equivalent to three days of the voyage and 50 percent off a future cruise.

We are also cancelling the ship's next voyage which is scheduled to depart on Saturday, March 16. Guests scheduled to sail on this cruise will receive a full refund and 25 percent off a future seven-day cruise. Guests who re-book will have their current rate protected on the future sailing.

Additionally, any non-refundable transportation related expenses will be reimbursed.

Yesterday was a scheduled port of call visit to St. Maarten. Guests were able to spend the full day in port and have the option of continuing to do so until their scheduled return home. All of the ship's activities and facilities are fully operational.

We are very sorry for this disruption to our guests' vacation plans and extend our sincere apologies. We look forward to welcoming them back on another Carnival cruise.

The Carnival Dream was on the last leg of a seven-day cruise and was docked in St. Maarten when the technical problem arose. The ship is based in Port Canaveral, Fla.
