Smoking on Celebrity ships (especially on balcony cabins!)

We were in an AQ cabin on Reflection recently (Feb) and for the first time we were surrounded by smokers.

One guy two cabins down was even leaning on the railing smoking a cigar. Despite calls to Guest relations there was smoking by one of our neighbours every day of the cruise. If a passenger is not visible and does not answer the door, it's tough to get "evidence" even when passengers are warned.

It is good that I was not there. I would have been in the Hotel Directors office immediately. I switched to Celebrity because of their NO SMOKING policy. As an xsmoker with lung issues, I can't stand smoking. We had someone smoking on balcony on Equinox and a number of us reported it and it stopped immediately. Let the smokers sail with Carnival.

Just returned from the Summit where we had one of the sweet sixteen balcony cabins.

It was a port heavy cruise and although we used and loved our balcony, we were not on it that much.

Someone was smoking early on (2nd or 3rd day) during the cruise. DW thought it came from next cabin.

I wasn't sure so was not willing to report it. We did not smell smoke again so it did not become an issue.

Having suffered through balcony smokers on previous cruises, this was and is a big selling point for us with Celebrity.

What is an "xsmoker"?

I agree completely. I would have no concerns or misgivings in taking a photograph for evidence. None! If you smoke next to my balcomy it is WAR!

I also agree with you!! One of the main reasons we cruise with Celebrity is their smoking policy. Someone suggested on another thread to highlight and tape the smoking policy on the smoker cabin's door. If that doesn't work it will mean war.

OK, I know that you can smoke cigars portside at the Sunset bar. Do they sell cigars at that bar? Sailing in 6 days and if they don't I'll need to make a trip my cigar store to stock up. 1st trip with Celebrity

Nope, I have never seen anyone buy or sell a cigar at that bar

(or any other bar).

I am supersensitive to smoke and was very worried about this last year. The only smokers I saw were in the designated smoking area, and when I walked past that, the gentlemen were kind enough to step away from people walking by so the smoke would not blow at them. I am reluctant to cruise any line other than Celebrity now because this was such a pleasant experience for me!

Good news! No smoking on balconies is not just on Celebrity. Princess, Royal Caribbean, MSC and ALL luxury cruise lines also have a policy of smoke free balconies. So, if a non-smoker gets a balcony on Holland America or NCL, don't bitch if you smell smoke. Too easy.

You might want to avoid the aft cabins on Millinium class ships as they are directly below one of the smoking areas and you can occasionally smell smoke on them. Also the aft AQ cabins on deck 11 are directly above this area.

Take a picture.

My thoughts exactly! :)

The smoking policy was a big reason we choose Celebrity. Much easier to enjoy the casino and your balcony. And with my asthma if I smell it on my balcony and see the culporate it's reported immediately.

Never understood why a person would shower and then smoke and stink again.

Not that I would ever advocate smoking anything let alone cigars but they do sell them in the shop that sells liquor. :(

we've done 3 celebrity cruises so far, all with balcony cabins. I'm super sensitive to cigarette smoke and can smell it a mile away. It stinks. On our last cruise, we were sitting out one evening and I could smell the smoke but couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I leaned over and looked down the side, nothing. I looked down, nothing. I finally looked up! Sure enough the smoker was leaning over his balcony 3 floors up! I reported him and never noticed it again.

There's been someone on each sailing who is smoking. If I can figure out for sure who it is I report them and then its usually not a problem anymore.

Just on Deck 9 and 11, and maybe just the port side. Otherwise, the aft cabins on M-class are some of the best cabins on the ship. We've had an aft on Deck 7 twice now, never a problem with smoke blowing down.

Also Costa, if you can get past that little mishap they had. Interesting how the major lines are finally following X's example. X has our loyalty because they were there for us when no one else was. They didn't have sail dates that would work for us in 2015, so we were forced to go with RCI, but that's the only reason. I did notice X used to have a "No Smoking" logo on the SeaPass cards, but that wasn't present on our last cruise.:(

OP, I've never experienced a problem on Celebrity, and from what I gather problems are rare. If you do experience a problem, my advice would be to report it to Guest Services without confronting them. No sense risking riling someone who might then be hell-bent on retaliation. Don't bother reporting it to your steward-- they're dependent on tips from the smoker's cabin, too, and it puts them in a bad situation if they were to be asked to confront them. X can't really do much unless they catch them in the act or with smoking materials, but you might also get the staff that isn't enthusiastic about addressing the problem. If the problem persists, time for the camera. I recall threads where photographic proof was enough for Security to take action, and I've never heard of someone who was taken to task for violating someone else's privacy. It would be a last resort, but I'm not about to let someone interfere with my vacation by ignoring the rules at my (actually DW, serious allergy to smoking) expense.

On our Feb cruise on the Constellation we had a aft balcony. There were at least two groups on the aft that were smoking on their balconies. Had no interest in reporting it as it doesn't bother me.

..... I also saw people smoking inside the TPool area. Apparently those in charge just didn't care.

As long as people do as you did and don't report smoking occurrences because it doesn't bother them, how can you expect the staff to care?
